This Surprised Me!!

 Comments (6) jump to end

I work over here in Australia, Fly in, Fly out (FIFO) at a small mine a few kilometres from the middle of nowhere in Western Australia

I get a call to ask, Can I pick up Liz from the stores and give her a lift back to camp? As she is a lovely person and I was going that way, I said Yep.

I know Liz but never realised and we where chatting and up comes football and all things blue, for me, when the pennies, two-bobs and all drop. Her name is Liz Cuff, the great grand daughter of William C Cuff — one of the founder greats of Everton FC!

After she told me this, I could hear Z-Cars playing in my head and we went on to talk about her parents going over to the UK to unveil the W C Cuff portrait a few years ago and does she have any memorabilia?

They have a fruit bowl presented to him when he was entered into the Hall of Fame (not to sure which one) and it has a scroll attached with all the league placings for that year. There is a good article in the ToffeeWeb archives on WC Cuff if you want to see what he means to EFC.

Just thought I would share this with you. Over here, working in the bush, the dust is a red colour but I like to think there are at least two royal blue parts that stand out by far from all the rest. Thanks!

Nice one Phil! There's more of us blues out there in the big bad world than many people think. I've travelled around a bit and wherever I've been I've always, always bumped into a few fellow blues! Hope you get the chance to see a few games!

Quite true, Peter. There always seem to be Evertonians wherever you go. I can't help but think that if somebody ever takes this club over & sorts it out it'll be a real shock to the rest of the footballing world to find out just how gigantic this sleeping giant is.

Phil, here I am up in the Blue Mountains (where else?). Nice story, there's few of us about, nothing to watch but League and Union and Aussie Rules. Thank God for Foxtel.

Phil - nice story.

I also work abroad in mining - in Tanzania. Nearly every local seems to wear a footy shirt over here. Almost all Premiership shirts - Manure, RS, Arse, Chelski and a growing selection of Citteh. It's depressingly representative of the money culture prevalent in our game.

And me ... proudly and defiantly in my ever expanding selection of Everton shirts and t-shirts. (Unfortunately for me nowadays every shirt I own is forced to expand).

All the locals I talk to have a sound knowledge of the game but understandably support the moneyed media mafia clubs.

Being in Africa I do see the odd elephant, but a few weeks ago I caught sight of a much rarer Chang variety. I was driving along when out of the corner of my eye I caught a blur of Royal Blue shoot by on a bicycle. I almost wrote the vehicle off and my passenger almost dropped his bowels given my epileptic type reaction.

For the rest of the trip I was grinning like a Cheshire Cat. My passenger meanwhile was left wondering if ''Vanish" could actually live up to its name and save his soiled under garments.

From small acorns ...
