Moyes's FA cup record

 Comments (27) jump to end

I used to think that Everton had a proud FA cup record – that was until Moyes took charge. His run started disastrously with probably the worst FA cup result in Everton’s history – losing at Shrewsbury who were relegated from the Football League that season.

In total, Moyes has had 11 seasons of FA Cup football and we have been knocked out 7 times after being pulled out of the bag at home. To remind everyone these are: Fulham, Man Utd, Chelsea, Oldham (3rd tier), Reading (2nd tier), Birmingham & Wigan.

The Premier League teams we have beaten, after being drawn at home, are: Chelsea, Aston Villa, Middlesboro, Fulham & Sunderland. Hardly impressive when compared with those we have lost to.

In the same period we have been drawn away once to a Premier League side – Liverpool. You couldn’t have asked for better cup draws if you were doing the draw yourself!

Yet in 11 seasons we have only managed to get through to the 6th round 3 times. Now I would have thought, as we have averaged somewhere round about 7th - 8th in the league under Moyes, that we could expect much better, especially with our luck in the draw.

In the Moyes reign, by my estimate, admittedly after a few drinks to null the pain, we have been drawn 17 times at home and only 9 times away in the FA Cup. Nearly 2 to 1 in favour of home ties – it makes our FA Cup record even more pathetic.

As for Moyes signing a new contract, I genuinely don’t care one way or the other. (Kenwright being chairman, that’s a different matter...) Anyway, I think Moyes's FA Cup record says everything that needs to be said about the likelihood of ever winning anything under the Moyesiah.

The FA Cup might not tell you a lot about a team's ability over the course of a season but David Moyes record gives an insight into how he manages. This is a list of the teams who have knocked Everton out of the FA Cup since 2003.

Wigan = Goodison
Liverpool = Wembley - worst liverpool side in living memory and a goal to the good at HT
Reading = Goodison
Birmingham = Goodison
Chelsea = Wembley - No disgrace but we were a goal in front in record time
Oldham = Goodison
Blackburn = Goodison
Chelsea = Replay after Home draw - No Disgrace
Man Utd = Goodison - No Disgrace
Fulham = Replay after Home draw
Shrewsbury Town = Away

Has any Everton manager failed to take advantage of Goodison in the FA Cup as often as David Moyes?

Add to that his record in the League and Europa cups and it makes for even worst reading.

I am now officially doing a 180 in my feelings toward Moyes. I used to be a supporter of his, but now I have truly seen the light. I am jumping on the Moyes Out brigade firmly.

This was truly pathetic. Martinez basically said he was conceding the match this past week, with his comments about how staying up was more important than a cup run and he would be playing some reserves. Yet to lose 3-0, at home, to arguably the worst team in the Premier League, a team and manager that would not have cared if they lost so they could go back to concentrating on the relegation scrap. How could this conceivably happen?

There is absolutely no way Moyes can come back, the idea he would coach Man City or Chelsea is laughable. I hope he goes to Germany. Although he is not even good enough for the Bundesliga. Coaching a club like Heart of Midlothian or Motherwell in the SPL is more his level. Maybe he could win the Communities League Cup.

I honestly wish Moyes would be fired or quit right now.

By the way, this was the opening sentence written by the Wigan blogger for espn.com in his post yesterday previewing the match:

"Only the brightest of optimists could expect a second string Wigan Athletic team to go to Goodison Park for the FA Cup tie on Saturday and get a good result."

Even their most ardent supporters did not think they would win this match. Absolutely disgusting.

Any thought of Moyes quitting or getting the sack are fanciful. His `seventhish` league placings have kept his mate Kenwright in office for a decade longer than he deserved and neither is about to change things now.
Tonight,like thousands of Evertonians, I feel bereft....bereft of a trip to Wembley which we should gave achieved with ease.Tomorrow,,next week and next month I shall still be bereft but BB and his mate will still both be in office and by the end of the seson the latter will be about half a million richer than he is tonight.
Funny old world,ain`t it?

Quite right lads he is a by the book, bog standard manager stymied when the pressure comes.

I'm just not interested in his best of the rest bollocks we really aren't coventry.

But the cheeky get believes his own press and with another legendary mis-judgement marked his own card by playing Billy big Bollocks dictating terms over his contract!

I've said it before I think he's as thick as a brick one of the luckiest men alive to be at EFC under a man so far out of his depth he can do what he wants when he wants and write his own cheques.

Sooner he goes the better.

I have said it before and I will say it again he will get the Celtic job.
I'm convicted that's what he's waiting for and that's about his level, one team league and a guaranteed place in Europe.
Mind you, I wouldn't put it past him to fuck that up either. Lennon I believe has had enough of the sectarian shit he endures up there.

Not a chance of him going to Celtic, not a chance.
Profile is not high enough and the wages would at best be 50% of what he is on at the moment.

Moyes isn't even good enough for Celtic. If he managed them, they would probably finish 6th. It would at least give some other Scottish teams a chance to win the league.

How high was lennons profile when he got the job ?
They employed John Barnes FFs.

Someone should inform the press people who for some reason, think Moyes is a great manager doing things in difficult circumstances. The result was no shock to me as I put it down to a typical Moyes day. His negative tactics, personality and overall body language get to the players then into the supporters who are expecting more. What the fuck did he say in the teamtalk before they went out ................. did he he kill any belief in a win?.

Times up Moyes, quit now if you are the man the press make you out to be.

Dave, maybe I wasn't clear enough. The profile of the celtic manager wouldnt be high enough for moysie, wouldnt be on the telly enough, he thinks he's better than that.

Not the other way round, that sellick were somehow higher profile than everton.

Apologies if I wasnt clear, but for ffs, don't ffs me!!!

David #055, after earning around £24m from his time at Everton, he could afford a wage drop to do the Celtic job.

True, still don't think its the job he's after though. Wasnt he a gers fan as a boy, was only at celtic for a brief time as a youngster?

Anyway, he wants something more high profile, better paying and I don't think he will get it. Will be gutted if and when he signs a new contract with us just beacuse he thinks there is nothing better out there for him.

Cant stand the fact that we seem to be used as a stepping stone/leverage. if he does sign a new one with us, cant wait to see the reaction on here!

One place he probably fancies is Manu but has more chance of managing Prescot Town. He was a good manager but it's time to move on.

Dave the FFs was aimed at the fact they actually employed Barnes. Not at you mate.

"Who dares wins"

Cup football is about taking a chance, being brave... Moyes's record in both domestic cups speaks volumes about him. Derby matches are likened to cup ties and there's a similarly disappointing record there too. Time for a change this summer!!

As much as they adore each other, surely BK & DM can see it's got to be the end of the road for this double act.

I would never suggest boycotting Goodison for a home match, as it would make everything a lot worse. I remember when we got frozen out a couple of seasons back the club could barely afford to pay the players. However, is there enough dissent in the crowd to perhaps do a "backs to the field" display next weekend?

I'm staunch MOB, and today was a new low, but the players, coaching staff and board need to be targeted too. It's been said so many times today, but if he had a shred of dignity, he would resign on Monday.

If Kenwright had any fucking balls, he'd tell Moyes on Monday he has until the end of week to sign contract or he's getting fucked off. Let's give a new manager the chance to get to know players and decide on areas to strengthen in the Summer and be able to hit ground running for new season.

Moyes wouldn't allow a player to hold the club to ransom so why is he any fucking different?

As for Fellaini, he shouldn't be allowed to put a blue shirt on again.

Managing Everton was the pinnacle of this Dour predictable, mediocre, timid, tactically inept man's career and even though he seems to have believed all the Media pundits plaudits deep inside I think he knows it. So anyone thinking he is going to willingly give up on the 'Gravy Train' at Goodison, where he operates on a salary of £6 million with a compliant fawning owner a dwindling number of sycophantic deluded supporters and no pressure, has to think again.

Daft Davey... but not so daft to cut his own throat, will have to be dragged out of Goodison kicking and screaming. Does anyone think Kenwright has the balls to sack him — because I don't.

Brain Lawlor,

Far from being told he 'has until the end of the week to sign a new contract', he should be told 'your contract is not being extended and we thank you for your time, goodbye'.

Everton should then be 24/7 looking for a suitable manager to replace him. After all, BK knows how to search 24/7, doesn't he? And with a £6 million pa salary on offer, there should be many prospective takers.

Forget this season: it's a write-off and we are already safe from relegation even if we lose all or games, so let's concentrate on fixing the biggest threat to Everton: Dour Dave Moyes. As many have said, the Scottish Prem is about Davey's level; I am sure they would welcome him.

Truly damning statistics in his FA Cup record, and as pointed out by an earlier post also add to that the League Cup, UEFA/Europa League and brief Champions League encounter (albeit against a top side and bogey ref). But these really do shed light on his attrocious attitude and negativity in important games.

You could also add to the list that we have never beaten either Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal or Liverpool on their turf in the league - aside from one cup win on pens at Stamford Bridge.

He'll never be sacked. Nor will he walk, without a job to move into. So unless a club comes in for him at the end of the season, we will be stuck with this turgid dross for the forseeable future...
