The end of the Moyes Years

 Comments (18) jump to end

It really wasn't "one of those days". The draws we should have won when we pounded teams early in the season were the days he surely must mean. The January window really was the beginning of the end. Our last chance passed then. Today feels like the end of an era.

I'd like to say it has been a roller-coaster ride. Eleven years of heroic failure and great memories. Giving it a go against the odds, taking on the big boys and giving it a real shot... It hasn't though; it's been stability and not much more. Maybe that's enough, certainly for five years that would leave a respectable legacy.

It seems to me, however, that we have come in a circle. An ageing team, young players who can't be trusted and a "40 points, job done" mentality. Let's not drag this on till the end of the season; time's up. Old Trafford and today were not "one of those days" scenarios. They were examples of a stale coach unable to motivate a stale team.

It's over and let's not have a slow painful death. Moyes can offer Everton nothing more and Everton can only bring Moyes a decline in his reputation.

What reputation, Andy? He has won nothing in 11 years. Yes, we have had European football back at goodison but never got close to winning it. The FA Cup — same old story.
Taxi for Mr Moyes.

'Moyes' and 'Mediocrity' — two words which just seem to fit together.

I've defended Moyes on this site before. I think he has brought dignity to our club at a time when when we were relegation fodder season after season. We may draw or lose more than we like but under him we usually, at least, compete against our opposition. Not against Wigan.

That first half was an omni-shambles. Neville should retire. Jelavic has had 15-20 games to find his form and it's not happening. Heitinga has been figured out by attackers and is being isolated and bullied. Osman should watch a Dennis Wise DVD (I hate that cunt) to learn how to be small and competitive. Coleman (great prospect) needs to take some advice from Hibbert.

Fellaini is 25 and at the peak of his athletic prowess, he should be a defensive midfielder AND an attacking one at the same time. Gerrard, Lampard, Keane, Viera and many others have managed it. If he wants his mercenary move then he should be stepping up and not EVER turning his back on the play. And Anichebe... WOW! Moyes brought him on to shake things up and all he did was throw his arms out so much I thought he'd been crucified. Frankly I'm sick of watching that fucking baby have a strop on the pitch.

Things need to be shaken up and for the next game I'd have:

Mucha
Stones Duffy Distin Oviedo
Coleman Barkley Gibson Pienaar Baines
Mirallas

Back to Moyes. He's not holding the club to ransom, he's going when his contract expires. He's not saying anything because he saw what an early announcement did for Fergie at Man Utd. But, it's all academic now. We've got no trophy to aim for, slim to zero chance of CL and fuck the Europa League — it's not worth a carrot unless you have the squad to win it. So, for the sake of our new manager, Moyes should experiment with line-ups, formations and tactics to give the new guy a heads up.

Kenwright has a lot to answer for too. When we got him we all knew he didn't have the money himself, he was a figurehead for the consortium. Well that collection of reprobates has done nothing for this club and Kenwright should either walk or call on them to fucking put something into the club for a change.

I was apoplectic watching that dross today but, in the same way that I'd love my girlfriend just as much if she had chicken pox, I love Everton and I hope that their embarrassment is enough motivation alone to try and win back some pride in the next game.

Fucking hell, what a crappy way to start a weekend!

Andy; sounds good to me, over to you, Boys Pen Billy... Oh, I forgot: you're 'only' The Chairman, aren't you,? You don't actually run the Club

* Sometime after the Game

"Davey luvvie..."

"Sorry Boss" says Davey, apologetically holding his hands up, "It's...."

"No, no, dear boy, come round for lunch tomorrow and we'll discuss it then; much too fraught today."

Sunday, after the port has circulated.

"This really isn't very good, is it, old boy?"

Moyes looks at his Perrier questioningly

"I can't fire you, I'll have to let you resign, the crowd are starting to get at me enough as it is.

"Be a good fellow and don't slam the door on your way out."

As Moyes leaves.... "Oh you don't know a good up-and-coming manager who would do a good cheap job do you???"

A while back, I looked at the league table and thought to myself: "How the hell are Liverpool so close to us? I mean, they've been shite, in disarray, a complete joke..." Then I realised just how many games we have drawn.

Moyes cannot kill games off. He lives for draws or narrow defeats. I mean, c'mon, a 4-5-1 at home against a bottom 3 team in a quarter final. That in itself deserves a sacking.

It might be a admirable thing, but in my opinion it's a very sad thing. We are the only fans who will put up with this.

I have actually heard from fans today defending Moyes and the players. If Moyes was at any other club he would be gone now. But, as long as we accept this shit, he will sign a new lucrative contract and we'll keep on being almost there.

Is there any defence now of Moyes? His tactical ineptitude has been highlighted on here for years and has become tedious. Football has moved on since Kenwright took over and since Moyes took charge. Yet we're still watching tactics from yesteryear and the club's business model is archaic. From the top down thee is absolutely no forward thinking, no plan on how to progress the club.

To those who fear change, if things don't change, your worst fears will still be realised. People use Charlton as an example but their mistake wasn't getting rid of Curbishley, it was appointing a succession of crap after him. How many jobs has he had since? One, which he was sacked from. He's now a relic. Moyes is the same and how he thinks he can hold the club to ransom or thinks he is bigger than the club is beyond me. He has to go.

The guy who sits next to me doesn`t say much. He knows of my admiration for David Moyes and just occasionally has a go at me about how `one dimential` he is. I`ve never understood the meaning of that statement and he seems unprepared to elucidate.

Yesterday he changed the script: "If this bugger signs a new contract, we shall be down to twenty thousand crowds next season."

"Rubbish," was my reply."You know that if we started with a run of wins, Davey will again be a hero. Because that's the way it is in football, here and everywhere else." End of conversation.

Now I mention this only to illustrate how easy it is to make off-the-cuff predictions which have no basis or semblance of reality. That football fans are totally fickle is illustrated by the ridiculous over-reaction to yesterday's result.

Yes, a truly awful display but that game in itself does not make every player useless any more than the manager `washed up.`

A year ago, Moyes received the proverbial dog`s abuse for prioritizing the FA Cup over the derby game. Four months later, he was again the hero when we were up there with the Top Four. Only the mugs thought he had the resources to stay there but the fact we now sit ONLY in sixth position and have lost a cup tie make him once again a villain!

How bloody `two dimential` can you get?

Richard, the derby is in May, they will twat us, that's how predictable the clown is, he has never been a hero in my eyes, he is a 7.5 out of 10 for me but I get called a boo boy by my mates who spend Saturdays in the gym or Tescos then clock the radio to see how their beloved blues got on.
I was shocked by how weak we were yesterday , however last week I commented Wigan will come and pass us to death as any team with an ounce about them usually does, for eleven years pass and move has never happened for us, that's why the clown plays static centre mids, we by pass them, I hope the fucker takes his graft football to Celtic as I am sick of the shite

Stop being so harsh on Moyes. He has masterminded some terrific cup results this season. Orient, Cheltenham, Bolton and Oldham (they beat Liverpool you know?). OK we let ourselves down against Leeds and Wigan but if we get a couple of lucky cup draws next season and avoid any team in the top flight then we may get to a semi-final. In Moyes We Trust.

We know where we are when, after the disgrace of yesterday the manager is still in office.
When I was a boy Harry Catterick said something along the lines of. 'We think big, we talk big' we are big!
Well we know what we are now!

Sometime in the future.

Everton Player/Manager Phil Neville vowed today that his team would emerge stronger following their shock defeat at the hands of The Rose & Crown in the first round (regional) pre qualifying round of the FA Cup.

"This defeat will allow us more time to concentrate on Conference survival and anyway some of the lads have day jobs to think about". He defended his decision to re-sign Louis Saha and Gordon West. "They both have loads of experience and know what it means to pull on the famous Everton jersey (sponsered by Bert The Butcher).

Speaking from his Croxteth Corrie care home Chairman Bill Kenwright backed his manager and spoke of Everton's plans for the future. " We're reducing the Boys' Pen admission from 1/- to 9d" Asked if this was connected to him being the only one in there last week he declined to comment.

"We are definitely in Europe next week". We're going from Dover to Calais for a whole day which will allow the lads to stock up on cheap ciggies and ale". "This is team bonding on a scale not normally experienced in the Conference".

Asked about plans for the development of Goodison Park he said that it was not necessary at this time as the scaffolding and pit props were in a fairly good condition, considering the time they had been in place, and the Anfield overflow car park, formerly known as Gwladys Street, was an important revenue source.

With a go ahead manager and a strategist Chairman surely it can only be a matter of time before Everton regain their rightful place in the third division.

David Moyes is in a correctional home for puddled Presbytarians and is therefore unavailable for comment,

Spurs fans could understand their board gettting rid of Harry Redknap and most fans felt his decision not to commit to spurs and constantly bleat on about the England job meant he had to go. What is holding this board back to do the same with Moyes? Its not as tho the compensation would cost a lot !. Is BK scared of him or does the board care? Peoples club my arse. If fergie or any other manager had seen a performance like that by their team they would have apologised to the fans and make draconian changes for the next game. Not Davey boy, Neville will be in the squad next week. If I was manager he wouldnt be anywhere near the ground next week and the same applies to the lazy Belgian and the twinkle toes English international Ossie Areuuseless.Time to give the young boys a run out and if the team still gets beat so be it. 6th 7th 8th who cares. Moyes Bk and the board don't !

Richard Dodd; first of all, where do you get off mocking a fellow Evertonian because he makes the mistake of mis-pronouncing the word 'dimensional'? You seem to draw a link between this and your fellow supporter, quite rightly in my opinion, fearing for the consequences of Moyes extending his stay at our club, ie, he must be a little under educated anyway hence his unwillingness to accept the current staus quo.

Well Richard, there are many others on here who may prefer not to throw words like 'elucidate' into the debate just to desperately show how intelligent they are (is the word 'explain' not found in Google dictionary as well??) but do share that particular fan's unease about the direction this club is heading in.

You reference the 'off-the-cuff predictions which have no basis or semblance of reality' but the fact is that many of us have been expressing the same concerns and dissatisfaction for many months if not years.

Yesterday's result made it far more likely that Moyes will sign that new 5-year contract because no other club of status or ambition would surely want him now. That, for me, is depressing, a bit like watching a car crash unfold and being unable to do anything to stop it. WE NEED CHANGE!!

It's a sad ending for Moyes. He promised so much when he arrived with his "People's Club" comments, his promise of success within 5 years, his making us a top 10 team etc.... But sadly it all looks so stale and tired now. We started the season so well and January was a golden opportunity to strengthen the squad but, once again, his dithering and blind loyalty to his boss meant that our season would end in a damp fart rather than in glory.
His maniacal insistence on playing the same players in every game, his refusal to use his squad, his refusal to drop out of form players and his refusal to give the kids a chance means that his legacy will be seriously tainted IMO.
Goodbye Moyes and good luck.

Colin - re: we started the season so well.

Yes, but that was by default.
Our planned pre-season was a screw-up for some reason I can't recall. Weren't we supposed to be on a foreign tour that got cancelled? The rest was allegedly the reason we had such a fresh start.

The DM era is over. Best wishes for the future.
Everton will move forward.

I have never lost it as much with Everton as I did yesterday, so many years of being let down, disappointed and down right pissed off! If a woman had made me feel that bad I would have dumped her and fucked her best friend !

I want a shake up, Moyes out! but let's just say Billy bullshit grows a pair and sacks him tomorrow, who will take over for the rest of the season? Martinez won't leave Wigan till the summer at least!

The problem with David Moyes — and yesterday highlighted it — is his inability to change a game tactically by either moving the teams formation or substituting players. People yesterday saying after the third goal the game was over is a load of crap — there was still an hour left to play and Wigan had scored their goals in three minutes. Unfortunately, the person who could not realise this was DM who should have shown leadership and made changes then; not wasting 20 min for half-time.

My sentiments are with the supporters who are undecided over their season tickets, knowing that — if the present board and manager are still at the club next season — they can expect the same. My employment was in the mining industry and people who did not do what they got paid to do (eg, David Moyes), they got fired and that included a manager's relatives.

Everton at the moment have a board and manager with no leadership or backbone qualities.

It will be a bad day for Everton if Moyes signs a new contract. The man is far too negative and is simply not good enough. Few managers get the chance to put together a team of £50/60/70,000 a week players and this guy is not big enough to handle it.
