A dose of realism…. Anyone for cricket?

 Comments (19) jump to end

With Saturday’s disaster still all too fresh in our minds I thought that I would try and establish a few facts rather than just post a tirade of disbelieving dejected derision. Perhaps my reasons for doing this are simply so that I can find some rationale for continuing to be a football fan at all…

Facts

1. The squad of players at Everton is the best we have had for a long while – Moyes deserves credit for this. However, we are still not good enough and lack strength in depth.

2. We don’t have world class players (maybe Baines is the exception) so it is irrational to expect Osman to perform like Messi.

3. Moyes seems to be able to over-achieve (slightly) in the course of a season but for some reason gets things very wrong for one-off big occasions and fails to inspire at all.

4. It is not possible to compete with the top clubs in the Premier League whilst at such a financial disadvantage – to think it is do-able is pure folly.

5. Bill Kenwright is blue through and through but is misguided and delusional in what he expects to sell Everton FC for and the terms he wants.

6. Everton’s financial position and wage structure is such that selling at least one high profile player in the summer is inevitable.

There is absolutely zero excuse for the Wigan performance and as Evertonians who have seen past glories we expect so much better. But, big-game capitulations aside, and in the light of the facts above, not much is going to change any time soon. Therefore we can all either stop bothering going to the game at all, or at best hope for a new manager in the summer who will reinvigorate things and maybe get the School of Science playing some more expansive and entertaining football.

Maybe it is time to take a dose of realism and try to enjoy watching Everton again – okay not for performances like Saturdays! But for god's sake, it has to better than cricket…

Problem is Graeme doing nothing and accepting dross betrays not only our history but more importantly our future.

The days of following a football club because of where you live and family allegiance are gone, what you're advocating is let the kids watch Liverpool, Utd, City, Chelsea because you can't be arsed to do anything, a version of I'm alright Jack.

Sorry mate you're not on.

7. Neville and Osman should never play in the same team again.

What does cricket have to do with the current/historic uselessness of Moyes/Kenwright/Everton? I don't understand the comparison.

In my opinion the squad of Everton players is not the best we've had under Moyes. We have a very good left back in Baines, Jagielka is solid but we are weak and vulnerable in defence elsewhere and we still need a good right back and central defensive cover. Aside from Fellaini (liability) and Gibson (injury prone) we are also very weak in the centre of midfield. Pienaar has been a good player for us but he is ageing along with Osman. The only other ray of light is Miralles, but our strikers are also very average.

I think we had a better squad when we had the likes of Lescott, Jags and Yobo as centre backs, Arteta, Fernandes, Pienaar, Cahill, Yak and Andy Johnson with the potential of Anichebe and Vaughan at the time to bring off the bench.

Barry - I wish more than anything that things would change but, as a poster to another thread correctly stated, even if BK goes Everton are not an attractive buy for some mega-rich billionaire.... What do you think we should be doing?

Graeme I just don't know how you can say that.

The take overs of Chelsea and City were in much worse circumstances than ours it was widely known Chelsea were on the verge of bankruptcy I think it was 100 million debt and a covenant on the ground effectively nailing any london property advantage, City rent the ground ffs.

We're in the realms of "the bible is the true word of God" how do you know? "because the bible says so".

Pressure via fan protest needs to happen to get the truth of what's happening at GP the idea umpteen other clubs have been sold yet despite 2 or 3 enquiries a week nothing happens here - it is an insult to the intelligence.

We really must stop drifting into this parallel universe where everything but the plain obvious is explored.

Kenwright and co are looking for a killing - unfortunately left to their own devices the only death will be this club.

Alot of those "Facts" look more like opinion to me. I'm not at all sure this is Moyes best squad, although it's certainly not his worst. It may be unreasonable to hope to compete with the monied clubs, but I'm not convinced that the task is impossible. Is Bill Kenwright blue through and through, misguided and delusional? - Is he even really in control?

This is not Moyes best team by any stretch.

Graeme some facts of my own -
1/ best team hmmmm Anichebe and Jelavic strikers who just can't score, Gibson and Mirallas constantly injury prone, Neville / Osman / Heitinga just plain awful, Naismith words fail me how is this the best team?

2/ I would keep Howard, Baines, Jags, Distin, Coleman, Pienaar, Barkley, Hitz and Feillani and build from there.

3/ Moyes has never overachieved he has won nothing in 11 years, failed against all the big teams, bottled it in Europe and all cup competitions and got a nose bleed whenever we get near 4th place.......Moyes out!

4/ and 5/ Kenwright has to go and we have to force it, no more mugs clapping his mugshot on the big screen.

6/ We shouldn't be a selling club run Feillanis contract down don't let him go because the money won't be used to replace him.

Give us something to look forward to again.

I got some realism for you. We have slipped from 4th down to 7th in the league, and more depressingly below you know who. And we haven't even hit a tough run of fixtures yet. We just got dumped out of the FA Cup at the quarter final stage by a team struggling in the league who got ripped apart 4-0 at home last week. Not to mention it was one of the easiest possible runs to a final you could ever wish for.

Cheltenham, Bolton, Oldham, Wigan, Millwall/Blackburn. Think about that.

Its enough to make you want to pack it all in.

We will be lucky to finish 9th at this rate. I would love to see wholesale changes to our XI for the remainder of the campaign. Starts for the likes of Duffy, Barkley, Stones etc. But we all know this won't happen, not with DM in charge.

I would disagree with the first 5 points of the writer - how dare he declare them as fact. I agree with 6 though we only have 1 high profile player - Baines. No-one else in the team will create any money in transfer fees and certainly not that Belgian turncoat.
