The day that David Moyes signed his new contract in 2008 was the day I changed from believing he was the man to take us to the top to questioning his actual cause and caliber. I think he held off for a better offer then, and demanded a fairly ridiculous compensation to stay, never once assuming BK (Liar, Boys Pen, “Your Blue Union has betrayed the club” bollocks, wanker) would cough up.

For the record, I think Moyes will be our manager next season. Even after yesterday’s debacle, I think the supporters are still around 50-50 on him. For the past few years, myself and others have been explaining why we want rid of Moyes, much to chagrin of some of the regular posters – the IMWT crew. Our, the MOB’s, biggest stumble has been when asked about a suitable replacement.

The flavour of the month has been our 2013 FA Cup conquistador, Señor Roberto Martínez. I’ve kept away from calling for his employ as I just don’t know enough about him, and, while impressed by his charm and supposed dedication to athletic football, he’s won the exact trophy as Moyes the exact amount of times.

Today, I watched Atlético Madrid vs Real Sociedad. Ever since we bought Arteta from the San Sebastian club, I’ve followed their results with interest. Today, they went to the Spanish capital to play a team that had sat second in La Liga all season until their local rivals won earlier in the day to put them ahead on the ladder. It is worth mentioning that the last time Atlético dropped a point at home was late last season against Sociedad. It would have been understandable if Philipe Montanier sent his small squad (smaller than Everton’s and worth considerably less) out to minimise the deficit. When they went a goal up, Atlético threw everything at them, only to have counter-attack after counter-attack threaten to make it 2-0 to the away side. In other words, with a goal lead to one of the best teams in the league, they defended well AND tried to extend their lead. They won 1-0.

I’ve been trying to learn as much as I can of Montanier this season, and now think he is the man I would put my vote behind, should he desire a job in England. The kicker is that the form Sociedad are showing (lost once since the start of November, lost 4-3 to Real in a cracker and beat Barcelona 3-2 after going 2-0 down in the first half), they will be playing Champions League next season – we’ll be lucky to be playing League Cup past October. He seems a graceful fella, with a good football mentality, and I’d be proud to call him the manager of Everton FC.

Sounds like an intriguing option roman, though do you think he could adapt to the premier league. Or do you think their style of football would reap rewards as it is? I'm always wary of foreign coaches who don't get it quite right and all of a sudden you are embroiled in a relegation battle.

If moyes does go then I imagine the criteria most people want are:

1. Someone who plays to win, preferably with attractive football.
2. Someone who will give youth a fair chance and play players on form
3. Someone able to spot good players or with a good player knowledge to facilitate working on a transfer shoestring
4. Someone brave, happy to enact a thought out plan b and c if plan a is failing
5. Someone who will be able to do these things without us plummeting down the league.

Such a shame Laudrup is now out of reach as I'm just not sure I can think of too many other managers who fulfill these criteria.

Sam, You're not sure who can fit the bill because you are not involved professionally in the game. How many overseas players have you heard of before they are mentioned as transfer targets? Similarly those in the know will be aware of up and coming, or even experienced coaches who could perhaps 'fit the bill'.
I don't know how extensive is Kenwright's network within the game but have no doubt that Moyes is not the only option, let alone the best , for the future.

That's a fair point John. Moreover of course it's impossible to know how someone will do however much you know of their work. But out of the possible uk based candidates Laudrup is the one I would have felt most confident in. I don't know why but I don't feel kenwright will go outside uk. He's too risk averse.

If Moyes leaves at the end of this season, which I both hope and think he will, I fear we will end up with some uninspiring also ran. Yesterday I saw bloody Nigel Adkins name being bandied round for fuck sake.

I honestly don't know who I want to replace him but you only have to look at Swansea and WBA to see you can do better when your 'brilliant' manager moves on.

A couple of things about this whole affair are really fucking pissing me off.
1) The fact that DM is holding us to ransom and expecting us to be grateful for this negative, tactically naive, boring football he dishes up and sit in hope he signs on to deliver some more.
2) Patronising fuckers on Sky/Newspapers wheeling out the 'you don't know what youve got till its gone'. I know what Ive got, and Im fed up of it, and at £38 a ticket per match, I deserve more.

Half the problem has been the attitude of Moyes through the media.

He never bigs up the club or it's support, he only praises the men paying his extortionate salary.

He shows no dignity when being interviewed, even on the club website he comes across as an arrogant bastard.

It's fine to have this persona if you have won a load of trophies, but not from someone who has never lifted a trophy in his entire career.

Along with with stalled contract, he is fast losing any goodwill he had from the supporters, he has the air of someone who thinks he is untouchable - fine if you are Wenger or Fergie, embarrassing if you are a schmuck from Preston North fucking End.

He has been reading far too much of his own press, and will soon be found out elsewhere.

3 DOWN IN THE CUP, AND LET'S HAVE EVERY PLAYER BACK IN OUR OWN PENALTY AREA - WHAT A COCK.

I am a Moyes fan, but I think it is time we moved on.

Thanks for the memories, but next, please!!

I have been pro Moyes throughout his time with us. That is not to say that I havent at time doubted or questioned him. Indeed after we lost to Spurs, last minute, during a night game at Goodison about 5 years ago. I called for his head. However I didnt really mean it.

On Saturday night I was sat at home, almost expecting to learn that he had resigned. I actually found myself hoping that that was the case. Enough is enough, time for a change. If I was in charge of Everton Moyes would have been given a contract under his nose on Saturday night, and told that he had 72 hours to sign it. If he didnt he would be sacked and paid off (3 months)

I got speaking to mate who supports the others yesterday and he asked who I would want to replace Moyes, he suggested Hughton!!! Typical redshite.

Anyhow it got me thinking and I came up with the following shortlist in reverse order.

5/ Roberto Martinez
4/ Slaven Bilic
3/ Steve Clarke - with Big Dunc no2
2/ Michael Laudrup
1/ Gary Neville.

Speaking about the defeat on Saturday, in Today's Echo, David Moyes is being quite elusive and as always presenting more questions than answers: -

“It was a performance I’ve not seen from my team for quite a while.
“I’ve always known what I need to do to move it forward. A lot of those things get apparent.
“A lot of supporters and sports writers as well don’t always maybe see it. As the season goes on those frailties start to show up more and more.
“People start to notice them. We’re quite good at covering a lot of them up through the years.
“We considered all the different permutations that Wigan could play and tried to make sure we covered all bases.
Moyes admitted he has been unsettled by aspects of his team’s displays since January. He said: “I thought there were bits against Reading last week I wasn’t so sure about. I’ve seen signs about things I wasn’t sure about. Obviously I’m not going to publicise them and say what they are.

Why didn't Moyes consider which formation would best suit Everton rather than worry about what formation Wigan would employ?

Are the players going on to the park carrying injuries?
Are the players not playing to the system DM has asked them to?
Are the players not giving their all?

Mystical Moyes must have an answer if he thinks he sees a problem, if he does see the problem, why hasn't he attempted to fix it?

Patrick, all Moyes' Obama-esque rhetoric can be paraphrased as such:

"I've lost the players."

Would take a long time to transform us into a counter attacking team though. To do this you require pace, only Mirallas Distin and Coleman are anything that you would describe as pacy in the first 11. We'd need a whole new midfield and attacking line to play this way. For better or worse Moyes has tried to build his team around one that controlled the ball and dictated play - sometimes it works wonderfully, sometimes our lack of quality makes it redundant - sometimes it just looks like utter garbage. When it works well though you're in control. With the counter attacking model the very first thing you do is concede superiority to the other team. You have to swallow your pride to do it which is what Mourinho has done to beat Barcelona with Madrid. Do the Amdrid purists like it? Probably not, but they like the winning. Does it help having Cristiano Ronaldo in your counter attacking side? Undoubtedly. This is ultimately what has revived the RS season, Rodgers finally abandoning his tactical blue print for the 4-4-1-1 kick and rush counter attacking football that Gerrard has always thrived in.

If a new manager came I'd want him to play the Arsenal/Barcelona way (what used to be the Everton way) of dictating the game yourself and taking responsibility. Counter attacking has always seemed cowardly to me, you have to watch long periods of defense and although it can be thrilling to watch, as a netural I've always pitied the team that ended up losing after being donw by two sucker punches despite dominating the match and only allowing 2 shots on their goal. It is becoming increasingly effective however so maybe its time for a manager to finally replicate Fergie and harness the best of both worlds - enough possession to damage the opposition - but not so much that you're always getting countered - the ability to play on the counter effectively - but not the reliance on it to the point where you're defending for the majority of matches. If anyone though brigns that ridiculous kick and rush, hoof it and push, look for the second knock downs,, dive for pens, wait until we're gifted goals, 'football' that the RS have been trying to popularise since Rafa was appointed then I would not welcome them.

It's not for "the MOB", or any supporters, to replace Moyes. It's for the Board. Seeing as they did so well in appointing him, we shouldn't be worried should we?

If it's true, as suggested on another thread, that he's given Chelsea till the end of the month to make him an offer, or he'll sign a rolling 1-year deal at Everton, then he's really gone down further in my estimation. An absolutely appalling situation to be allowed to happen by the board, which is why I won't be surprised to see it materialise.

James

As you pointed out with Utd, teams don't have to be defensive to conter attack. After the other team has been in possesion, it's about getting the ball from back to front quickly before their defence has had time to re-organise. We are so slow at doing this and tactic's like everyone back on corner doesn't help. I also think we have the players to remain solid as well as being able to break away fast if we change formation. 4312. I'm not saying this formation is perfect or suitable for all games.

In a perfect world were we have a fully fit squad and form isn't an issue.

Howard
Coleman Jag Distin Baines
Gibson Fellaini Hitz
Mirallas
Vellios Jelavic

It's not as if he couldn't get cheap players in that are miles better than what he has got:

Michu £2M and £22k a week
Lambert £1.5M and £17k a week
Brett Holman free and £14k a week
Jimmy Kebe £1.5 million and £11k a week...blah blah

or we could have Heitinga £65k a week
Fellaini £75k a week
Neville £45k a week...

Oh shit — we have!
