Picking over the bones

 Comments (22) jump to end

Following QPR's almost inevitable fall into the championship I wondered if there were any players that we Blues might pick up from the relegated teams or Championship sides that don't make promotion if we have any sort of kitty at the end of the season.

I don't think there is any doubt that we need reinforcements in the GK, MF and goalscoring departments so here's my shortlist from the "assumed" dead.

GK - Begovic from Stoke or McCarthy from Reading (Julio Cesar bit too old and assumed expensive).

MF - Nzonzi or Palacios from Stoke,Will Hughes from Derby, Jedinak from Crystal Palace. would love Taraabt but he may be too expensive.

Up front - Remy (worth it), Cormack from Leeds, wished we'd have got Zaha from Palace (maybe United will loan him to us next season).

Any other snippets that fellow blues might advocate?

Park Ji Sung put in a shift for them whilst his team mates didnt look arsed, Remy is quality but a mercenary and will end up where the highest bidder is. Taarabt is a one trick pony. Agree with Begovic from Stoke, a very decent keeper, Benteke will end up elsewhere, McCarthy is a good shout.

Di Canio from Sunderland? ;)

Taraabt is a no go for me. Great on the ball but no end product. Cant pass or shoot well. I think he has well under 10 combined goals and assists in the last 2 years which is dismal for an attacking player. Someone who can be arsed to actually look up the stat can correct me if I'm wrong.

I think N'Zonzi, Begovic, Benteke, Kone, and Maloney would all be worth a punt at the right price. We have to remember though that these teams are being relegated because their players aren't good enough for the Premier League. Some players are exceptions but most (like Taraabt) are sub par footballers who look less sub par because the players around them are even worse.

I think we can get better value for players from overseas like Mirallas, Fellaini, Cahill, Pienaar, etc.

With our lack of transfer funds the likes of Benteke is out.
As an alternative Kone could be picked up for relatively small fee and wages.
The goalkeeper from Reading will end up at a top team, with Tim being 34 get in there now.

When you look at QPR's team, there are a good few individuals that teams will want. The problem is they cant play together. I remember looking at their side on Saturday and wondering how they are adrift at the bottom.

I always liked Hope Akpan, now at Reading, both as a youngster here, then I saw and heard good things about him at Crawley. He looks like a good, pacey box to box midfielder, which we really lack, as much as I like Gibbo, Osman and Fellaini.

I was impressed with N'zonzi when Stoke came here, but that is about it from their side. Nobody will miss Stoke if they go down, and a few of their players might end up at promoted Premier League sides, but not much higher than that.

I hope Villa don't go down as their young side are doing the best they can, plus anybody from them that is good enough for us would be out of our price range.

Norwich? Nobody springs to mind.

Newcastle would be interesting, but I doubt they will go down, and their decent players would still command big fee's, like Cabaye, Sissoko, Cisse etc.

Forgot about Wigan, who I think will go down this year, one great escape too many for me. They have a few, McCarthy, Kone, Figeuroa, Maloney and Beausejour could all add something to Everton.

The likes of Hoilett, Onuoha, Adam Johnson and N'Zogbia have disappointed me since we were first interested in them but if we could get them cheap they may be worth a punt. McCarthy and McManaman at Wigan are also worth looking at as is Vydra at Watford - he will certainly be cheaper than Remy that's for sure!

Begovic is great but will cost far too much so maybe McCarthy from Reading is a better option for that role. Shawcross or Huth are decent at Stoke and Villa have a few - Weimann, Lowton, Albrighton and maybe even Bent! Plenty to choose from really.

My personal choices would be McCarthy (Wigan) Shawcross and Vydra which would hopefully leave us with some spare cash for a couple more quality signings from leagues abroad (better value for money) depending on whether we sell Fellaini and/or we get a good sum from the TV folk.

The days of picking up these players on the cheap could be over. These clubs are going to be getting huge parachute payments and won't be as desperate to recoupe the cash as they once were.

As for Vydra, he is on loan from Italy (Udinese I believe) so will return there at the end of the season

I thought we already had them. ;)

There are still bargains to be found, its just about either timing or taking a punt on potential.

I think the player who would fit into our side of those definitely getting relegated is Jimmy Kebe at Reading. Seen him in the flesh on four occasions against us and he has been their best player on every occasion.

Still some good players worth a chance from the Championship. Liam Birdcutt at Brighton is a quality holding midfielder, who looks to have the character to make a top flight player.

I saw at bit of Tom Lees of Leeds when he was on loan at Bury. A future PL player who reminded me of Jags.

Will Hughes at Derby is obviously a precocious talent but I suspect if we had c.£10m to spend we won't spend it on a 17-year-old.

Taraabt no brainer except for the fact that right now he is in and out of the starting eleven, doubtless pissing chirpy cheery chipper God save the queen mum, jellied eels mate, I like a jig in ilford Pally but would rather live at the end of the central line mate good ol' 'Arry off. Might not be a bad thing and worth a punt

I think Andrew Ellam's has it right when he says that relegated clubs don't really need to sell their players cheaply anymore. Unless there are release clauses. With that in mind I suspect there will be better value to be found abroad.

The likes of remy and benteke will cost £8m minimum but a striker and possibly a fellaini replacement seem the most needed. Kone could be a good shout but would prefer someone younger. Mcarthy from Reading is a very talented looking young keeper who might not cost the world but not sure Moyes would drop Howard yet. Perhaps Di Santo might suit our style of play.

We need a striker, so Jordon Rhodes from Blackburn would be the one for me. Apparently has an £8 Million buyout clause in his contract. Well worth a punt in my humble opinion

Kevin, QPR signed Remy for £8M. I think Rhodes looks decent but surely for that money getting a full french international or similar is preferable? Mirallas only cost £5.5M or something like that. Goes to show that the best bargains may be abroad.

Relegated clubs will generally need to sell. The parachute payment sounds a lot but will is needed to allow them to honour their contracts for a year or two.

The reason why they may not sell is that they can't get other clubs to pay the wages so the players won't leave or do leave and the relegated club still has to pay part of the wages (without having the player).

QPR are in deep shtuck on this one as they are paying crazy wages for players that have simply not performed. We may be interested in say Hoillett, but were unable to meet the wage offered by QPR first time round and his market value has probably dropped since, so we will now be prepared to offer even less.

With the financial fair play rules coming in they are going to struggle to comply with them even if their owners are prepared to put up with the massive losses they are about to incur next season. They could well be a great case study on careful what you wish for.

I'd take Hoilett but not Taarabt, he's an overweight show pony who's isn't worth squat when the chips are down.

Hoilett on the right would allow us to stick super Kev up front, and have Vic, Jela and Vellios fighting for his place. He would be a potent attacking force no doubt.

Strikers: Beneteke - My preferred but too expensive.
Remy - Fantastic player, who would improve us.
Kone - Bit hit and miss with his finishing but would improve us. Especially if we could pick up for relatively cheap.

Mids: McCarthy and Gomez are very good...and Beausejour would give us pace on the left..and a brilliant crosser. Hoilett would also be very interesting. Nzog and Taarabt would both be expensive...and have proved to be too sporadic and uninterested this season.

And defenders...Lowton for Villa has been doing fantastically well...maybe a Hibbert replacement? him and Coleman would be two very good attacking options.
Obviously Huth and Shawcross are superb cbs...and we will prob need a Heitinga replacement. I would take Shawcross obviously.

And Cesar and Begovic are both great goalkeepers.

If I could pick two realistic targets to take...it would be Remy and Shawcross (Kone and Huth backups).
I would then like to see us add another pacey winger to challenge Pienaar.. (Hoilett perhaps, or even Maloney).

I find it hard to want any Stoke player.

Gavin, Park Ji Sung had actually popped into my head during the week. I think that he would add something that we lack sometimes, a player with the ability to run at defences. We rely too much on Mirallas at the moment.

In terms of Stoke, you would have to wonder how they would look at other clubs. They play a very rigid style and you wonder how much the players are constrained by this.

I can't see Villa being under serious pressure to have to sell any players if they get relegated. The wage bill would not be that high and the younger players may still be happy to get a full season's football under their belts, albeit in the Championship. I would be curious about Stephen Ireland as he looks to have fallen out of favour there in a big way. The thing about it is though, is he bright enough to know he is running out of chances or would he just end up being a waste of cash.

Does anybody know how those french players Newcastle signed in January are doing. Newcastle seem to have bombed since but I haven't read any match reports or seen them play to know what is going on. The reason I ask is that there was much made in January of the fact that Newcastle had seemed to pick up very decent players from abroad for little or nothing.

Shaun Maloney from Wigan, maybe Hoilett from QPR but he doesn't seem to produce much. Park from QPR but he's getting on a bit and we need to sign younger players who'll last or move on for big profits. I think we basically need another Pienaar and another Mirallas in order to compete over the course of a season, being able to cope with injuries and especially make substitutions that can change games. I'd see if Scott Sinclair could be winkled away from Man City.

Ireland and Taarabt are both a no. They have talent but both seem to think that talent is the end of the story, whereas it needs to be the beginning. Moyes has helped us avoid this type of player, with the exception of Drenthe who was free anyway and we were pretty desperate. N'Zogbia is another in this category who I would avoid.

Taraabt is one of the most overrated players ever. A complete tool as well. No thanks. He can't even hold down a place at QPR. Townsend looks a player but he belongs to Spurs. Remy as well is a class act.

The two James's at Wigan are decent.
