PFA Shortlist
The player of the year shortlist is in and whaddaya know - Spurs, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Utd are all represented.
Michael Carrick, Gareth Bale, Robin van Persie, Luis Suarez, Eden Hazard and Juan Mata.
Hazard is a great player, but I would argue Lukaku has done better, and done better surrounded by West Brom players. Same for Michu at Swansea.
Obviously diving like a u-boat commander is of no concern to those who make up the list but admittedly Suarez and Bale have been excellent.
But the list smacks of laziness, spoils for the big teams, and a media friendly list at that.
Our contenders would be Baines (most creative player in Europe don't you know...) and Fellaini who despite his more quiet performances in recent fixtures surely trounces Carrick and Juan Mata, neither of whom had to carry Phil Neville all season.
If every player has a vote but can't vote for a team mate, and required to keep to the short list, is abstention allowed?
Also, if there were a veterans' award Distin has been a beast all season. But the bottom 14 don't count, right?

Predictable list as always. Bale deserves to win it. I don't rate Hazard and for the price he cost I would say he has had a pretty underwhelming season. Who would you rather have Hazard or Mirallas? Hazard was piss poor for them in the cup against city and constantly ran into blind alleys and gave the ball away.
Baines should have been on the list.

I am just wondering if all the big squads voted for their own players would that make a significant difference?
944 Posted 19/04/2013 at 18:52:42
My list would have been:
Bale
Baines
Michu
Van Persie
Lambert
Hazard (just beats Mata)
Why is Welbeck on the young players' list btw? Considering he has only scored 1 in 25 PL games. It's just bias towards the big 4 as usual.

Steve Clarke
Sir Alex
David Moyes.
All three are deserving winners.

Who the fuck cares if we are overlooked on purpose or not ?
It is a meaningless award made by meaningless people who, could not give a thrupenny fuck about you, me and the world in general.
Get over it. IT DOESN'T MATTER !
958 Posted 19/04/2013 at 19:45:19
All that matters to me is what Everton do on the park.
The rest of it is, imo, just so much piffle and wank.
Happy for our players to not be contaminated by any of it.

As we know, the big clubs always have players mentioned and for some reason strikers are in the vast majority of nominations. To me the ability to be a great defender is just as good as the ability to score goals. Without doubt Bale has scored some spectacular goals which get replayed over and over but a great defender and his many great tackles get very little coverage. I therefore find that the media and the ''fellow'' professionals who do the voting are quite shallow for the most part in their voting.
Consistent performances from players like Jagielka, Baines and other similar defenders with other clubs are always overlooked, sad to say. Hopefully the voters will take into account all the other bullshit Ratboy has served up this season besides his goals.
974 Posted 19/04/2013 at 20:33:52
Why they vote in January in this day and age is a joke. What do they use, bottles?
978 Posted 19/04/2013 at 20:55:34
Messi could sign for a premier league club, play one game in August, get an injury that ends his season and he would still get on the list. Sometimes it just to do with a player having a big reputation.

Totally disagree.
The fact that players from the "usual suspects" always get short listed mean that our players who may be undecided about signing contract extensions may think that they will get more recognition elsewhere. Let's face it - are they going to win medals here?
The media still think that Liverpool are a big club and that we are a small plucky club punching above our weight. The fact that we are 6 points ahead of them in the league at this stage of the season is ignored as it doesn't suit their profile. Only a few chaps on the radio have mentioned that Baines has created more chances than anyone else in the top 4 leagues in Europe and should be in the list.
Wilshere has only played 20 times in the League for Arsenal without scoring a single goal - young player of the year? Absolute nonsense!

The one that puzzles me is Hazard. I remember him from August and September but haven't noticed him since, and Chelsea have done very little.

I you put your two good points together we can probably draw he following conclusion:
The PFA Player of the Year is nominated by the players. Being a cheat is no bar to being nominated. Therefore.... cheating is a widely accepted part of the game by the players.....?
It'd be interesting to see the profile of the Suarez votes - whether it consisted more of fellow strikers or midfielders as opposed to defenders who may have been on the wrong end of his antics.
Maybe there's plenty of defenders who can look past it and voted him in because they know what a nuisance he is and - let's face it - on ability deserves to be on that list.
Are fans simply more bothered about the unseemly side of the game than the players? I don't know, if you took biased voters out (us, Man Utd, Liverpool etc) and left it to the rest I would bet Suarez would still make it in, such is the world we live in nowadays.

Suarez: The diesel version of Tevez.
Van Persie: once again SAF sacrifices Rooney's game for someone else's.
Hazard: Chelsea's Tarrabt.
Mata: Fair enough, good player.
Carrick: Utd's Gibson, fair enough.
Wilshere: A whining little bitch being carried by Arteta.
Wellbeck: Run Forest, RUN.
This is just another example of maintaining the narrative of the big clubs and the also runs. How have the likes of Baines, Zabaletta, Kompany, Yaya Toure, Lukaku, Michu, Routledge, Rodriquez, Lambert, Mirallas, Coleman, Cabaye not made this list?
105 Posted 20/04/2013 at 12:34:08
Second is Bale. Without him and his 22 goals in all competitions, Spurs are just a mid-league team.
Third, Baines. He is the most productive player throughout Europe in providing chances. But what Everton really needed this season is a Suarez who could have scored 22 Premier League goals so far that would have secured a Champions League place for next season.
934 Posted 22/04/2013 at 08:48:47
Baines
Baines
Baines and, er ...
Baines.
937 Posted 22/04/2013 at 08:57:43
Not a good example for yougsters perhaps?
939 Posted 22/04/2013 at 09:08:41
Methinks the votes may be recounted and Bale will be given it. They couldn't allow Sewerat to be their poster boy.

It seems to have completely passed David Moyes by that he is utter, utter garbage; he's so bad that he makes Titus Bramble look like Franz Beckenbauer. We already have Distin, Yobo, Jagielka, Heitinga and at a push you can play Pip or Rodwell there... and Senderos wants to leave the Arse to get first team football as it's World Cup year, which surely he won't get.
I just can't really see who this benefits other than Arsenal as they get him off their wage bill!!
