In truth, I loved Royston Drenthe as much as our Norweigen Blue. Undoubtedly in my mind the most talented player under Moyes's time in charge.

Playing under the radar for Alania in Russia he recently scored the first hat-trick of his career:

I also hope that his words earlier in the season that David Moyes was right all along would perhaps signal a return to the club should he have become professional in his behavior and reinstalled his kitchen.

I agree 100% Nick, Drenthe was outstanding for us. He'd offer something fresh and more pace in attack that Pienaar can't.

Sign him up!!

Don't know if he's the most talented?

Think Mirallas and Fernandes are shouts to that list as well. Definitely Mirallas over Drenthe for me.

We need another flair creative player though on the wings to cover Pienaar and Mirallas. Drenthe would be good IF his attitude is back (and that is a huge if), but very unrealistic

A very talented player, but an idiot which is why he is currently playing for an obscure team. In Russia.

If he sorted his head I would have him back. Imagine the pace of Mirallas and Drenthe on the break, it would scare the life out of defenders.

Looks as if RD is playing central here.

Pienaar Drenthe Mirallas behind the striker... salivating stuff.

Whatever happened to Jimmy Sorheim? Odd sort of fella. Very up on taking to the streets I remember.

Drenthe? No chance of him coming back to The Old Lady with ginger as gaffer, oh hang on ....... Talented. Very dignified and decent exit speech a little while back, a little like King Charles I's gallows speech in January 1649, his departing speech was his finest moment

Agree with you there, Nick, if he could get his head together he would be amazing down our left side; bags of pace, can dribble and has a great shot on him. Real real shame he is/was such a knob.

Still he's only in his mid twenties so you never know... if he continues to play like that I can't see him staying at that Russian club for much longer.

Thank you, Nick! Glad I am not the only one who liked Drenthe as a footballer.

Drenthe was here and Moyes had the chance to get him on a free and chose not to do it. I regret that but Moyes is the one in charge and I highly doubt he ever wants him back as Moyes is bitter and I think spending a transfer fee on this guy now would be looked on as a loss to the club, just like the Fer deal could end up doing.

Talented is subjective...but I'd agree that the likes of Mirallas have shown much more for us, and previous clubs, than Drenthe as. As have Arteta, Baines, Fellaini etc...he had a lot of potential, but was overrated because he was explosive...as explosive players always are.

The reality is that, at the age of 26, he has scored a grand total of 15 goals... whilst he was occasionally played wing back, that total, for an 'explosive winger', who is certainly not the most selfless of players, says a lot about his actual, instead of perceived potential, ability. He will never make it a big club, and I'll be surprised if he lasts more than 2 seasons in Russia, before his temperament, instead of his talent, forces a move.

Just to add some balace to this discussion (yes, I know balace is a strange concept to most) heres drenthe caught on camera drinking alcohol at the wheel whilst racing his Ferrari.

Ryan,

I like the fact Royston is a bit of a loose cannon. I mean, let's face it, we have enough characterless choirboy Yes-men with no personality in the squad. Maybe spicing things up a bit is what we need. Moyes likes the quiet unassuming types though, so there's no chance on RD coming back here.

For those of you old enough to remember Psycho Pat van den Hauwe, he was one crazy dude but could he play a bit. Moyes would have kittens if he ever had to manage a player like Pat. Compared to Psycho Pat, Drenthe is an angel.

People are all so quick to judge these days, snooping about recording shit on their iPhones etc. I don't give shit what a player does as long as he does the bizo on the field. Once that suffers... then Ta-ra, la.

Well Tony - 215 - I don't thnk that we can compare Drenthe off-the-pitch to Van den Hauwe; I don 't recall PVDH fucking up like RD off-the=pitch. And on it RD was hardly a psycho.

Incidentally. just watching PVDH in the Ip[wich A game Dec-84; was at that game. PVDH right back that day, Gary Stevens had a knock. Sharpy has just scored 60th minute, beaut ball from Sheeds.

Spot on Ian - 235. Holy crap, just watched Reidy's late tackle on Brian Marwood in the Sheff Wed home game 12/84. Marwood crocked Inchy who got taken off and Reidy got him back. Marwood did not make it back for the 2nd half

Tony Marsh, you're quite right. I like nothing better than supporting a player who gets caught drink driving, it shows passion and all that. While were at it let's sign Barton, Diouf, Suarez, Bowyer, Gazza, Olly Reed, Vinnie jones.

I think you're the type of supporter who would never be happy. If we had Messi you'd complain that he doesn't head the ball enough and he looks like Quasimodo's slightly better younger brother.

Paul Ferry
270 Posted 28/04/2013 at 00:37:17
You sure they were prostitutes Ryan, is that verified?

I Agree Ryan, he was loco, would never want him back, but I also agree 100 percent with Marshy about flair players and a bit of splash and dare. Reminds me a little of Lee and McKenzie. Mirallas apart, well nuts in moments, we do lack that sort of special Aguara/Remy spark. Marshy want joined-up footie and we get it now and then, but what's wrong with that.

Looks like he's stacked on a bit of weight.

Gave us some great highlights, and was under utilised when things were seemingly going ok. But the fact he basically accepted he was out of order shows me that Moyes had him sussed.

Odd that someone on here could fall in love with such an unbalanced individual.

Odd moments of excitement was all he ever contributed on the field and he was an idiot off it.

If your search for heroes begins and ends with Royston Drenthe, you too must have reality problems!

Paul, me and my brother, also a Paul, used to laugh every time somebody went in hard on one of our players as we knew within the next ten minutes the 'fouling' player was gonna get clobbered by Reid, Ratcliffe, Psycho or Gray. We had a team of gifted players back then, but a lot of them were also hard bastards.

A talented headless chicken. IMHO there are thousands of people out there that have talent to burn, but it really isn't enough. It needs to be allied with attitude, professionalism and a good footballing brain that when they have the ball (and even more importantly when they haven't) that they invariably play the right pass, know when to shoot and when to pass etc.

For example how many times have you seen a player with pace to burn put his head down like speedy gonzalas and go nowhere faster than anyone else. I've just been watching Kone from Wigan; great footballer oozes class, but is guilty of poor judgement (in other words a greedy bastard) which is probably why he's playing for Wigan rather than a 'bigger' team.

Which brings me back to Drenthe; the reason why he isn't playing for us or Real Madrid or anyone else of note is that he doesn't cut at the top flight on a regular basis Simples

Drenthe's two minutes of magic were worth the price of a ticket but his lifestyle meant he couldn't sustain it at the highest levels which is why he is now playing in a no-mark league and no self respecting club will touch him.

It's a real shame.

Two very good goals and a penalty, albeit a well taken one. Personally I don't rate hat-tricks with penalties in them as highly as all the goals arising from open play. 30 yard bender free-kicks are ok though! ( Am I right in thinking Francis Lee scored a hat-trick of penalties in the 60's or did I dream it?)

The grudge I have against RD is that he was exactly what we needed to change the game in the second half of the semi against the shite. Somebody with pace who could push their defenders back and the ability to score from distance. But the idiot wasn't available because he couldn't behave himself.

Prat.

Probably the most frustrating player I have seen. Had all the attributes to be a top player for us, but ultimately could not be saved. And it's more enraging that he had so little respect for our club by turning up pissed out of his head.

Spot on Al, we used to do that as well. Reidy got a booking that day and would have got a red today. That team took care of itself, perhaps that's why they were so good. Used to see most of them boozing int he Weld Blundell on the Formby by-ass, including having the pleasure of watching Alan Harper puking his guts up in the car park!

Dave Roberts @ 355

Dave, mentioning Francis Lee reminded me of the scrap he had with Norman Hunter when Lee was with Derby County and they were both sent off. If you enter "Francis Lee and Norman Hunter" on youTube you can watch it again and laugh at two of the worst attempts of men at fighting since Audley Harrison last entered the ring. Loads of punches thrown, loads of punches miss.

Seem to remember a Fraudley Harrison fight versus Haye and the big fella didn't miss a single punch. But then again he didn't throw a single punch either.

As for Drenthe, if he can sort his head out, which looks unlikely, then I would love him back. Remember what a clearly bonkers Tommy Gravesen did for us? Loose cannons are great, but only when they are pointing in the right direction.

Drenthe is deceiving. He looked like he had talent initially and he does have pace but he was quickly found out. I remember he couldn't beat the Sunderland fullback on either side and was eventually hauled off. He's pretty shit really and that hat trick is hardly highlight material.

He's not fit to be even mentioned in the same breathe as Arteta, Pienaar, Gravesen(First time), Mirallas, Fernandes, Rooney

Ian @ 235, truly two footed describes the player and most of his tackles. Once heard somebody say that they had a season ticket in the paddock back iin the mid 80s and when Psycho was on that side you never heard a word of criticism because you were too scared he's jump the fence and have a go

The reason I got into Everton was because of Duncan Ferguson. He was a loose cannon and I loved it! Still do. I guess Drenthe has that kind of element in him, but he is far from the hero Duncan was, that much I know.

I guess we all like different things, and I like the kind of performances Drenthe did while playing for Everton. He had potential, but he screwed up and Moyes will NEVER bring him back after what he did — that much I know about Moyes.

If, however Moyes can find similar talent, then I would be very happy. Drenthe was not a world beater, but he could have gone pretty far... too bad he got too comfy for his own good.

I think his time in Russia will do him good; he may return to Holland after a couple of years and have a decent end to his career after all.

You have to laugh, we must be fucking desperate if we would even contemplate having this waste of oxygen at our club. Have our standards really dropped so low that we would nostalgically remember a player who was a complete fuck up.
Yes he has some ability but I saw most of his games and I can say I never saw him have a good game, a few flashes a couple of good goals. But he is destined to piss away what talent he was given.
Lets not forget he had history.

Threatened to sue Feyenoord, the team who developed him to engineer a big money move.
Suffered from 'anxiety' at Real Madrid and refused to play.
Went on strike at his loan club Hercules.

He then given a chance in the PL acted unprofessionally culminating in turning up late for training in the week before the semi.

Some have intimated Moyes didn't handle him properly but here it is from the horses mouth

"“It was David Moyes who has opened my eyes,” he told reporters. “I can only say that Moyes was right in every way. I was not living like a professional player in Liverpool.

“I can try and come up with all sorts of excuses, but that is not fair on anyone. I look in the mirror and I have to admit that I had to stop living the way I did. All players love to go out and hit the town. But I had no discipline at all. I hit rock bottom.

“I was close to ending up on the street again where I once was before I became a footballer. I am fighting for my last chance in life and in football. I have just lost a stone in weight.”

Drenthe was repeatedly accused of failing to be on time for training, among other reported misdemeanours (including sneaking women into Finch Farm and turning up for training drunk), during his time at Everton and now wishes he had been more responsible while in England.

“I was living in a different world,” he admitted. “And I realise I have ruined it all myself. I used to confront David Moyes, thinking I had the right to talk to him like that. But in hindsight, he was so right about me most times.

“Now I can’t believe I blew it at Everton. It is one of the most fantastic clubs in the Premier League. My attitude and poor mentality are the reasons I ruined my career there.”
To start comparing him with Psycho and Dunc, two players who represented the club with distinction is just ludicrous.
Any club that is prepared to accept players who think they are bigger than the team are undoubtedly going to end up fucked. SAF got rid of players who were in a different league to Drenthe for that very reason.

I have taken my fiancee to many Everton games and she has only ever taken notice of two players: Drenthe and Mirallas – because "they are exciting to watch". She finds football boring as much as I have tried to change that but those two players are the only ones who have managed to make her sit up and want to watch us play.

They are rare players who do that but, if we were ever to get him back, he would 100% need a slight attitude change. I do think we would've beaten Liverpool in last season's semi-final with him in the side. He let us down.

Jimmy Sørheim

Though I said Drenthe is nowhere near Duncan Ferguson as a hero (or legend), I guess some people want to read only what they want, and then twist other peoples words, just as long as it fits their own agenda.

Those statements made by Drenthe were too late, and it makes me sad that he could not have done that while he was here.

If I am not reading it wrong, it sort of sounds like Drenthe wants back into Everton and that he has learned his lesson. I would be very surprised if Moyes brought him back here. His biggest weakness was that he did not defend when it was needed.
