Agony or Ecstasy at Anfield?

 Comments (74) jump to end

We're less than a week away from the Merseyside derby. Everton need to win to keep in order to keep us on track for 6th place finish or higher. Liverpool need to win to have any hope of overtaking Everton and of ensuring that they don't have to endure another year of finishing below their dreaded rivals.

If the game at Newcastle is anything to go by, we can expect Liverpool to come out the gates charging. Also expect Carragher, Lucas and Gerrard to put in some 'spicy' tackles to set the tone and disrupt Everton's passing game. They will target Fellaini and Pienaar for special attention as these two have the tendency to be easily distracted by rough-housing, and typically end up losing their heads and getting a red card.

We never do well when we're under pressure to get a result. We never do well when teams attack us with speed. We never do well when teams manhandle us. And we never do well at Anfield! So the omens don't look good for us come this weekend.

Let's hope the ref doesn't join in and give them the customary unfair advantage they normally get when we play them.

All-in-all, I don't have high hopes for a victory, or even a draw. But I'd be delighted if I'm proven wrong.

COYB! — Prove me wrong!!!

Here speaks the voice of sanity and truth. We haven't a prayer on Sunday and deep down we all know it. Moyes will shit himself again and I can almost imagine the sight of Phil Neville warming up when we are 3 down.

Who needs Freddie Kruger for nightmares when we have Davey Moyes?

First instructions from their manager will be to stop Baines & Pienaar, so we have to be a little bit clever come Sunday, and not set up as usual.

I would go for a 3-5-2, and push Fellaini a little further back as a defensive destroyer in midfield. They ran all over Newcastle, so we need some strength in the middle, and Osman isn't going to give us anything in the tackle.

Coleman & Mirallas can get some joy down their right hand side, and hopefully Jelavic can snap out of his season long slumber.

The simple fact is we need win the battle first, as in every Derby, and they will be desperate to finish above us.

I hate derbies and I'm definitely not looking forward to this one. If the rs play like they did against Newcastle then we could be in for a long afternoon. Under Moyes we never win at that dump so I'll settle for a draw. Beating WHU at home should guarantee us 6th place. I can see us getting a draw at SB as well. That will leave us on 64 points.

Everything is in our favour Suarez is banned Gerard and Carragher are aged shadows of the players they were and we are a paragon of stability against their clownish recent history.

The law of averages must be in our favour surely to god Moyes cannot leave not having won at Anfield in 11 years?

If he really is undecided about his contract he must realise this could be his last chance to redeem himself...or is it?

Kevin,

If its anything like the Goodison derby the first instruction from their manager will be "knobble that Mirallas fella". I reckon their Captain will be more than happy to take the job in Suraez's absence.

We need to be ready for those dirty tactics and "the battle" as you correctly point out.

I fucking hate derbies!!!

I thought that this could be winnable but after Liverpool's 6-0 win I'm not so sure. If we do take the lead we cannot take our foot off the gas.
If we win we still have a chance of Europe, lose and the RS could finish above us, and a Baines quote, "It's just another derby" has confirmed my fears futher.
I hope I'm wrong.

You're right Steve, we always seem to be a little timid when we go there, we need to leave our foot in the tackle as much as them, and GET INTO THE REF AS MUCH AS THEM!!

They will cheat & moan at every decision, we need to do the same.

Barry, he may not be the player he was but Gerrard will rise to the occasion as the twat always does. I would love it, just love it, if we were to stuff them on Sunday and Gerrard do his cruciate in. Sportsman Of The Year. Me? Doubt it.

Don't go there with a negative attitude, we can beat them but it will take an almighty effort and we need to have the same zest which we showed against Man City at home, don't forget if they lose their season is over, so there is pressure on them too.

They've hardly been vintage Liverpool sides Moyes has had to come up against, so god only knows why he goes over there with such an inferiority complex.

We would win if Tony Marsh was allowed to give a passionate pre match team talk on behalf of every middle aged Evertonian who has had to suffer derby experiences.

TM I implore you to pen a no holes barred team talk for the players as if you we're right there in the away dressing room on Sunday 5 minutes before kick off. Hair on the back of the neck stuff...anyone else feel free to try too.

Fantastic speech in Any Given Sunday, a speech like that will get them off their backsides and get them up for it, listening to that woulde make Baines revise his "It's just another derby" statement.

The Al Pacino teamtalk - that makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Brilliant.

I sadly share the pessimistic view myself. Have the choice of working on Sunday. Never dreamed of working on Derby Day until I realised that we'd never win over there with Moyes in charge (as much as I like the man) so gave up on it and resigned to making myself a bit richer in defeat. Just can't bear the Derby's under Moyes' stewardship.

Times like this we could do with Big Joe Royle being around the training ground this week and doing the pre game speech.

It'll be the same old story and i'll be annoyed as ever come Sunday dinner time. When will Moyes and his team ever get / learn what this means to us fans, I mean they've no problem being up for it against Man City these days, why can't they be up for it like that for the Derby?

Kendall's and Royles teams never surrendered, I mean even Walter lead us to victory at Anfield at one point. What we lacked in ability was made up for heart, pride and determination. Even the crisp bags stopped coming onto the pitch such was the tenacity of the tackles from Everton players!!!

All that Suarez stuff made me proud to be an Evertonian in comparsion to the lack of dignity and class that lot showed defending him.

Why for the love of God can't we go after them like we do against Man City? Why? Why? Why?

Andrew Dutton
830 Posted 29/04/2013 at 20:49:33
The key to getting a result on Sunday is getting stuck in to Coutinho and stopping him playing. I hate to say it, but he is class and the way he picks out a pass and executes it is frightening. If we can leave the boot in on him it will also rattle players like Gerrard and Carragher and make them lose their heads.

Fast paced start, some tasty tackles, put them on the back foot, and win the right to play football and we might, just might have a chance.....

No one needs to worry about Neville starting, he's injured and probably won't feature again for the club.

I expect at least a good effort from the lads this weekend. I'd be very disappointed if we don't come away with at least a draw.
I'm hoping that we can get over our annual Anfield hoodoo, could this year be it? Gibson needs to be back.

I'm not looking forward to it, the only game of the year I regularly feel the shits coming along, but hopefully I'll be able to see the first win at Anfield in my support of Everton.

The title of this thread sounds a bit like "Coffee or tea, which shall it be?" Of the two options available, I will have a nice cup of agony, please. No milk or sugar. Oh yeah, and a couple of chocolate digestives, if you've got any. Ta very much.

The thing is, if you start off with agony, the only way is up –- a win is a wonderful bonus. But if you start with ecstasy and then it all goes wrong then it's an awfully long way down – you fall for miles and miles and then suddenly the ground seems to rise up out of nowhere and you meet it with an excruciating thud. If you know what I mean...

Oh, and by the way, it's "ecstasy" not (as in the title of this thread) "esctasy". Wakey, wakey, Mr Kenrick, Sir!

Instead it'll be these are good so go careful lads and sit back and fall to shit ref decisions, that twat creasehead being up for it and Sturridge playing the game of his life.

I'm a bit worried about Johnson and Downing cutting the very weak right side of Baines. One way or another he has to funnel them down the line.

Sturridge is a selfish prima donna who hates physical contact so let's give him some. This guy didn't play for Chelsea, he doesn't play for Liverpool. Sturridge plays for Sturridge. No-one else. Bruise his ego and he disappears.

They have a superior attack but we definitely have a better all round team and can win this one. Of course, we will need fair officials who refuse to be intimidated by Gerrard and will penalise Carragher for holding in the box but maybe that's asking too much. We'll just have to beat them the hard way. They were flattered by a weak, tired Newcastle outfit and we are about to give them a big surprise. COYB.!!!!!

I was playing a board game with my daughter yesterday. I set up the board and - seeing an opportunity for a pre-derby contest - chose blue and red men to play with. She said: "Why are you going red? You never go red." I said: "I'm not going red, you are. Of course I'm not going to go red. I'm blue." I explained to her that I was looking for a good omen prior to the big match. Well, she's a Kentish Maid but she knew where I was coming from...

Do I have to tell you who won? You KNOW who won, even before I tell you who won. Yeah, that's right, she won. I was leading right from the start, for 95% of the game, then she overtook me at the death.

Bloody omens, I've never believed in them....

While I think we can win this one it's not a game I'm looking forward to. Never is. Gerrard in the referees face for 93 minutes and Carragher getting away with murder. The whole scenario makes me sick.

Unlike Newcastle, we do have excellent centre-backs and the majority of our other main guys love a big match. That said, Mirallis disappeared at Old Trafford and we'll need him to be at his best, especially if Moyes puts him up against the spanish beast Enrique.

Last week every move involving Anichebe and Jelavic broke down and they are both due a good performance. Let's hope it's next weekend.

Jackie. Lot of truth in what you say . Could well be a lack of belief but, Gerrard in particular, plays these derby gams like a man possessed and works the ref from the kick-off. For whatever reason we never seem to generate the same fervour.

There's no way we'll be going to Anfield looking to win (not that we ever do). A draw keeps them 5 points below us. It's going to be very difficult to overtake the teams above us. The only thing at stake is local pride, so expect a packed midfield & not much going forward. Moyes will be planning to stop them winning, & closing the gap, at all costs.

I can't say I blame him if he approaches it this way on this occasion. It does annoy me though that, when we have had the chance to have a go at them in the past, we have paid them too much respect and bottled it.

Tony I'Anson
232 Posted 30/04/2013 at 21:31:25
I still think Tony Marsh would do better than Al Pacino....

I don't know what to say really. Here we are back on our home soil.
Three minutes
to the biggest battle of our professional lives
all comes down to today.
Either
we heal
as a team
or we are going to crumble.
Inch by inch
play by play
till we're finished.
We are in this tin mine hell right now, gentlemen
believe me
and
we can stay here
and get the shit kicked out of us by Stevie G and Jamie C
or
we can fight our way
back into the light of the Royal Blue Mersey.
We can climb out of this mine, this flag wavin' tin mine.
One inch, at a time.

Now I can't do it for you.
I'm too old.
I look around and I see these young faces
and I think
I mean
I made every wrong choice a middle age Scouser could make.
I uh....
I pissed away all my money on away matches and in the Darkhouse
believe it or not.
I chased off
anyone who has ever loved me.
And lately,
I can't even stand the face I see in the mirror.

You know when you get old in life
things get taken from you. And when you're young too - ask Clive Thomas.
That's, that's part of life.
But,
you only learn that when you start losing stuff, like when Alan Handball cheats at Wembley.
You find out that life is just a game of inches
So is football.
Because in either game
life or football
the margin for error is so small.
I mean
one half step too late or to early
you don't quite make it.
One half second too slow or too fast
and you get caught offside.
The inches we need are everywhere around us.
They are in ever break of the game
every minute, every second.

On this team, we fight for that inch
On this team, we tear ourselves, and everyone around us
to pieces for that inch.
We CLAW with our finger nails for that inch.
Cause we know
when we add up all those inches
that's going to make the fucking difference
between WINNING and LOSING
between LIVING and DYING.
between 5TH PLACE and 6TH PLACE.
between finishing ABOVE or BELOW that shower.

I'll tell you this
in any fight against the red shite
it is the guy who is willing to die
who is going to win that inch.
And I know
if I am going to have any life anymore in this City
it is because, I am still willing to fight, and die for that inch
because that is what LIVING is.
The six inches in front of your face.

Now I can't make you do it.
You gotta look at the Eveton player next to you.
Look into his eyes.
Now I think you are going to see an Evertonian who will go that inch with you.
You are going to see a guy
who will sacrifice himself for this team
because he knows when it comes down to it,
you are gonna do the same thing for him.

That's a team, gentlemen
and either we heal now, as a team,
or we will die as individuals.
That's football guys.
That's all it is.
Now, whattaya gonna do?

Patrick Murphy
238 Posted 30/04/2013 at 22:00:23
That should work Tony. But I'm not too sure whether I would want six inches in front of my face at any time never mind just before a game. I'm sure DM will roar out this speech and then his pragmatism will overide his desire to win and we'll see a five man midfield with one up front.
Having said that, I think that may be a way of getting about them. Usual back four, Osman Pienaar on each wing, Felli and Gibson in the middle with Mirallas up front and young Barkley in a free role. DM will probably plump for Naismith or Anichebe though instead of Barkley.

Harold Matthews

The manager of Dortmund was asked before last nights game in Madrid, what do you expect of your players, and he said "THEY MUST BE BRAVE" we have the ability, but tonight we play the crowd as well.
I would like to think, that we will go out on Sunday with a great attitude, and boss he game, and not the usual negative approach.
And get the result, like some of the so called smaller clubs have done there, this season.
Harold Matthews
382 Posted 01/05/2013 at 12:15:05
Yes Norman. They must be brave. Sadly, and I won't give names, We have a talented Brussels sprout who disappears if he's knocked about, a talented mid-fielder who is always knocked about and two very talented guys in the back four who continually duck out of the way of shots on goal. There is another hero who may or may not play(hopefully the latter) who is scared to close down and pretends to tackle. All in all , not exactly the best bunch to go to war with.

Even so, the opposition is vastly over-rated and we can beat them.

BTW, I just watched the YouTube video of EFC v Spurs from first 80s championship winning season.... "Andy (Gray) would you settle for a draw ?" Response "I don't think this team settles for anything other than winning". Says everything... Moyes would take a point in most away games but that wasn't always the case, which is what frustrates me with the man and his tactics.
Patrick Murphy
539 Posted 01/05/2013 at 23:05:32
Mathew, then it will be Atkinson who dictates how the game is managed and he's no friend of ours either, but then again which officials are?
James Martin
540 Posted 01/05/2013 at 22:55:27
Steve bit of a difference between the 80s championship winning team and this one though isn't there? Andy Gray was right to say that because that team knew they were the best. Half the time Moyes is penned in by quesitons, he always says before the majority of matches that he'll be looking to win. Often the interviewer will ask something like 'all things considered are you not too displeased to ocme away with a point' and Moyes will usually say something like 'ideally I would have liked all three but considering the way the game went then a point isn't the worst result'.

Just to point out to some that they don't always beat us over there. The most likely result based on past results is a draw. Just because we haven't won over there doesn't mean they've won 12 on the bounce. From their point of view they actually have quite a poor home record against us in the Moyes era. Lets not dip into the inferiority complex ourselves, last season was horrendous but there's been seasons when they've been far better and couldn't beat us. They had a great team in 2009 yet we played them twice at their place and once at ours and din't lose any of them. We've shown decent ocnsistency all season, no reaosn why we should fear a heavy defeat.

Harold Matthews

Gerrard reckons it's a "must win" game. especially as it's Carraghers last derby. Let's hope our guys spoil the party. With a full strength team we are certainly good enough.

Quite agree Ross. This is not an ideal match for a young ref wearing L plates. On the plus side , he had a brilliant game last week and appears not to miss much, The Atkinson factor doesn't bother me. Despite the history he is actually a top class ref.

What does bother me is the powerful left foot shooting of Downing, Sturridge and Johnson if Baines and Distin allow them to cut inside a la Robben or Bale. It's a weak spot for us. Has been all season. Our two lads are the most one-sided tacklers I've ever come across and what's more.......Everyone is wise to it.

Just realised. I've gone from positive to negative in a matter of minutes. These derby games should be banned. They are a serious health risk.

Just want us to play at full potential for once it's the big difference between them and us.

Chris Leyland
594 Posted 02/05/2013 at 12:58:28
We have a massive inferiority complex when it comes to them. It runs through the manager, the players and, let's face it us, the supporters. Many of us hope that this is the one, the year we do them at their place but most of us deep down know that it won't be. We also know that they will beat us, win their next game and we will go into Chelsea away 2 points above the shite with them playing QPR at home. We all know what will happen as a result.

I don't blame Moyes for this because it has always been the way. Three cup finals at in the 80's and 3 wins for them. The first Derby after we won the 1984/5 championship and we are 3--0 down at Goodison inside 20 minutes. The shite win the league by 2 points from us. The Clive Thomas FA Cup Semi and last season's one, the 5-0 home thrashing and most Derby's when it ends 3-1 to them.

We've had a few notable exceptions - Andy King, Charity Shield and the Grobelaar own goal, that Graeme Sharp goal at Anfield, Wayne Clarke to stop them beating Leeds record, Kevin Campbell at Anfield, the Andy Johnson 3-0 but these are few and far between and that's the point.

I for one will be going for a long walk on Sunday, phone switched off and in a foul mood.

The fucking scumbag from across the park will get Europa League spot next season as they have qualified through the Fair Play system. Those horrible scumbag crying bastards always come up trumps no matter what. It seems that they can finish fucking bottom of league and still get a place in Europe.

So Brendan Rodgers has said this morning that, should Liverpool qualify for the Europa League via Fair Play, he would be minded to turn the place down in order to focus on Top 4 qualification.

Were that to happen and, as is more than likely, Everton were offered the place, should our club accept the place?

Now I know there are those amongst us who yearn for liquid nights on the Continent just as there are many who see that particular competition as an unwanted diversion.

My own feeling is that, whilst qualification by Premier League place MUST see us take up the challenge, a place at the gift of our patronising neighbours is another thing altogether.

Richard: we are 11th in the Fair Play League. If English teams are given an extra place (and they probably won't be as it's only the top three fairest leagues, and England is currently 4th) and LFC turn it down then there are a number of teams above us: Southampton, Fulham, Reading, Norwich and Wigan would all be offered it before us. So, it's not going to happen.

The top 4 in the Fair Play league is Arsenal 1st, Liverpool 2nd, Spuds 3rd and Man U 4th.

5th is Southampton so if the RS turn it down and Arsenal and Spuds get the CL, Southampton will get it.

Arsenal will get Champions League so Fair Play will fall to second in ranking which is the Shite and I agree, let them get it because it will ruin them again.

It's just ironic that the Shite always seem to come up smelling of roses. Remember when we got Champions League and they cried like fuck that they had to defend it and were given it by Uefa. The rest is history because then Uefa wanted us out of its as quick as possible.

Let's just go out there on Sunday and fuck them in the derby. Moyes, don't be negative; show some balls and attack them from the start and they will shit themselves and crumble.

Let's ram Carragher's last game down Gerard's throat on Sunday. I believe the Shite are also planning a Memorial Day on Sunday before the game, another stunt for every viewer to potty them and take any gloss of us. It seems they will do anything to try and get their fickle supporters and the nation behind them and try to upset our rhythm.

They're a sick horrible club with no dignity or the rest... look at their unwavering support of a racist buck-teeth biting cheating diving fucker. If I was Moyes, I'd be telling the team to shove their "We're always the victims" shit down their throats.

How can the RS get in to Europe via the Fair Play League when they have Suarez?

I feel sick. This world is very, very wrong, in many ways.

How can they do it, Jeremy? Gawd knows but they always find a way to stuff us!

The shite are 2nd in the Fair Play League as of 10th April. Surely the Suarez incident will impact on this.

The fair play table and how points are awarded is here:

http://www.premierleague.com/en-gb/matchday/fair-play-calculation.html
In particular surely this one must be taken into account:

Players should respect the Laws of the Game and abide by the spirit of Fair Play.

The Fair Play delegate’s assessment will not double count items already covered in the ‘Red and Yellow cards’ category, but the seriousness of the offences punished by cards may be considered. This category will also include offences overlooked by the referee.

Any single major incident between players may have a significant bearing on the final score.

It's just disgusting. What has Premier League football become. If we finish 6th, with 61+ pts, and don't get into Europe – and Liverpool do, finishing below us, with all the incidents that Suarez has gotten into this season (8-match ban, 10-match ban....)

To be honest, it makes it difficult for me to justify how to follow top flight football anymore. I will always of course love EFC, but I'm not sure I want to be around stuff like that. The system is broken.

I only caught the tail end of this on Sky Sports news this morning, It's either something to do with Hills or knowing them it could be to celebrate that their a top ten team. Even could be to present Suarez with a new pair of dentures or cheating fucker of the year award.

Have to say how much I pissed myself when I heard Gerrard say "Let's win it for Jamie" seems we're their Cup Final now. I can just see that prick Rodgers now planning to take Pienaar and Mirallas out the game like he did at Goodison. He knows that either of them will turn that paceless defence apart.

Read it on Sky Sports news it seems they have a better chance of getting into Europe even finishing below us. We can fight hammer and tongue right to the end and miss out and the Shite can sit back and it's a possibility they can get in.

Let's hope they do because for the sake of failing in the league but on the other hand let hope they don't because I'm sick of their fickle fucking supporters gloating and the effect it will have on global warming and pollution flying all their supporters in for the games. Don't you just fucking hate kopite Gobshites.

What the fuck are you all worried about? Newcastle 0 Sunderland 3 Aston Villa 6 Sunderland 1. So, based on the form guide, what would 5th from bottom Villa do to the redshite? Newcastle 4th from bottom, what makes us scared of the redshite when they turn over a team in freefall?

Tairy hesticles.

2-0 Gerrard first goal against an Everton team crippled with fear. Expect a pen or red card thrown in for good measure. Victory at Anfield will never be on the CV of David Moyes as Everton Manager.

Well, why the worry? What the fuck do they have that we don't? Won't say I told you so.
