What's the Remit?

 Comments (48) jump to end

If there has been one decent decision that Bill Kenwright has made in his time, it is to have hired David Moyes. Whatever the long-term benefits that did or did not transpire, it was at the time the perfect appointment.

11 years on, Everton are in a very different place, the remit has changed, but the same man has the final word.

But what is the remit? The notion that the board have any real ambition is tempered by their own catastrophic handling of club finances and the absolute failure in what long term plans they tried implementing along the way.

The remit will be either reflect a lack of ambition and accept shuffling back into the pack, to persist with the outside chance of European qualification, or to go all out to bring in a man to smash the glass ceiling – and put us on those midweek flights to Barcelona and Munich! .

At the start of any one season relegation haunts all clubs in the bottom 13. Yet Everton are one of seven clubs guaranteed the higher reaches. If the club slides and the potential of Europe disappears, so do the best players. Then without finances to cover the lost potential Everton will be a West Ham or Fulham. So sliding back into the pack would come with the type of manager that flitters between Premier League and Championship clubs. The Alan Pardews or Steve Bruces of this world.

Who to fear? Former Blue – Mark Hughes.

But if Bill wishes to persist with where the club are now we need to view what David Moyes brought to the table: Guaranteed safety in the top 7 and a challenge for Europe.

David Moyes shows this can be done without financial backing. Joint 9th in wage budgets, and no first team purchases in five of the last seven transfer windows. There is no other team on Everton’s financial level who are even close to the top 7, and certainly Everton are the only club to do this with consistency and hang on to the coat tails of Spurs, Chelsea and Arsenal come April. The type of manager to at least continue this would be the gambles on flavour of the month types such as Laudrup or Di Matteo, but there are others with better track records.

Who to hope for? Former Blue – Slaven Bilic.

Some years ago I remember Fulham live on TV playing at Old Trafford in the FA Cup. The whole crowd were signing ‘Keegan for England’. With the full backing of public support The FA made the worst managerial appointment possible.
When it comes to the next manager, Kenwright is passing the future buck when he says he’s listening to the fans. Act with some bloody conviction! If anything, the fans are suggesting the level of manager they would expect for you to appoint!

It could be though, could be, that Bill Kenwright has the club motto tattooed on his backside. If he is tired of 6th and 7th like the rest of us, he may want through sheer brilliance of the next manager to qualify for the Champions League.
If Everton can go into April on the shirt-tails of the massively funded competition above with David Moyes, then think what the new impetuous of a Hiddink or a Bielsa type could give the players.

Who to pray for? Bill, if your blood is Blue, and you want nothing but the best, here’s a name for you - Jose Mourinho. Get on the phone to Madrid. Hell, get on a plane. Start there. If it doesn’t work out, work backwards. But for the love of God, go out there, sell the name of Everton - and give us someone to believe in!

Use the managerless situation to sell the club.
Offer the club to 'investors' on the basis that if they are willing to provide the required financial backing - then Mourinho will take over.

We get new owners.
We get Mourinho.
Mourinho gets financial backing to do what he does.
New owners get club on 'cheap' with potential to return to the pinnacle of English football.
Kenwright can get some sleep. He must be knackered after looking for new owners 24/7 for what seems forevevr.

Why the fixation with Slaven Bilic? Isn't this the guy who shafted Everton for £40k a week as a player?
Stephen Smyth

Have Everton fans forgotten Bilic's time at Everton, either injured or suspended, a handful of games and offski with the cash, his antics in getting Blanc sent off in the World Cup semi in 1998, a lowlife. Laudrup would be my choice but we will go cheapest option.

I find myself disagreeing with a lot of this.

First, Everton have not, in my mind, one of seven clubs guaranteed to be safe from relegation. I don't agree with Moyes stating it publicly but it only takes a bad run to leave you down there and Everton don't have the resources to buy their way out in any January sales.

The suggestion of Mourinho is also ridiculous. Why would he come to Everton. No money, shit board, shit stadium (as far as generating income goes).

Nick I agree with you, we should aim for the best manager that there is and work from there. So yes Mourinho lets give it a go, what exactly have we to lose by sounding him out. The remit as I see it should be setting a certain criteria and looking for the manager(s) who best meet this. I think the club needs to develop a world class youth policy and it has got to be progressive with the type of football it plays. So the manager needs to be:

Tactically aware
Committed and have a track record of positive attacking football
At least 5 years managerial experience and managed at the top leagues in Europe (Spain, Italy, England, France, Germany, Portugal)
Defensively sound - need to be able to organise a team who can defend (this to me rules out Martinez straight away)
Have a good record at bring young players on and improving existing players
Have a good record in the transfer market.

My fear about all of this is that Kenwright got lucky with Moyes because of Walter Smith's recommendation. I wonder if Moyes has made any recommendations and who they are?

Paul Ellam

Pereira is my preferred choice - favours attacking football, has handled big name players so nobody should phase him, has actually won trophies so has the winning mentality and more importantly for the likes of Kenwright - he is a free man come the summer! No compensation to pay - happy days.
I would also be happy with the likes of Laudrup, Poyet and maybe even Lambert (despite his poor season with Villa)

Frank de Boer matches your criteria perfectly. Except the 5 or more years bit, but he has won 3 Dutch titles on the trot, relying on the famed Ajax youth academy.
He has brought through Vertonghen, Eriksen and Van der Wiel. He's young, plays attacking football and has European experience. He was unbeaten against City in the CL, and the gulf in finances between Ajax and City is enormous.
We should not ignore Frank de Boer, he is my pick.

Interesting Ross, well maybe we can be a bit flexible on the years! Definitely sounds like someone we should consider. I think its important to actually set out what we want and then find the manager who fits that criteria. So lets add him to the shortlist. I don't follow enough European football to be an expert on foreign managers so I would be interested to hear other people's views.

Nick, absolutely spot on. I fear, though, that Kenwright will see this as a chance to save a few quid. He will look for someone cheap who will keep most of the supporters happy. To me, that will be a respected former Evertonian or someone from within. That must not happen.

Kenwright has had his safety net pulled away and it is time for him to quit the nauseating, sentimental , vomit inducing act and go and do what he owes us. Find the right man or appoint someone to find the right man.

I'm all for shit or bust someone with a bit of spirit and charisma at least trying to get Goodison roaring.

A relegation scrap is the only thing to get pressure on Kenwright and co. so it's better we go for it and fail than have another "survival/challenging for europe" merchant breathing life into their sorry carcases.

First and foremost, I think Bill will hope and pray for someone to retain Everton's premiership status.

Anything above mid table and a good cup run would be a Brucie and someone to turn a few players around and make a profit.

I just hope he doesn't let his ' boys pen' emotions rule what's left of his head.

Paul I would consider Lambert. I think he meets most of the criteria I posted earlier. I think you have to look at this season in its context. Basically Lerner wanted to cut the wage bill dramatically and use younger players; he knew that it was a gamble and they weren't going to have a great season. It looks to have paid off and I think they will be a lot stronger for it next season. So let's have a list of candidates who meet a certain criteria and work down them in order of priority. Lambert wouldn't be on the top but he would be on the list.

Diego Simeone has done a great job at Athletico Madrid-a very good player in his own right, his team play really good football, they press and attack at full pelt and Goodison is crying out for that. Hard to attract him though as he has steered Athletico into 3 rd place in Spain and has CL football for next year. Rumored to be on 2.5 mill Euro per year so we could tempt him with almost doubling his wages. He is the fans favourite for the Inter Milan job should they change coach at the end of this season.

I don't mind Paul Lambert, Martinez

I'd love Michael Laudrup, Pochettino (Southampton)
I dream of Mourinho, Pellegrini

I honestly believe this can be our moment to actually put a long term vision for success in the hands of our new manager. Set some goals, put pressure on him to finish in the top 6, pay him a massive bonus if he gets any higher, or wins a cup.

We can move forward if we make the right appointment, sign the right players, and get right behind the team. Our fans can make Goodison the most intimidating atmosphere in the League, it doesn't matter who the manager is. We sell out every away game, I hate it when I see Fulham bring 80 fans to a mid-week game at Goodison, and then someone has the bare faced cheek to compare us to them!

This is a big club, with some great International players, people forget just how big a club this is sometimes, because of the lack of trophies.

We need to lose the plucky little Everton tag, and get nasty, never mind being patted on the head by Fergie, fuck him and every other patronising twat in the media.

If we set the bar high enough, the new manager will soon get the message, just like Moyes & the players did after the Wigan game.

We could be looking a the biggest transfer pot in our history. This is a perilous time for the club, but if we can grasp the opportunity by the neck, and make the right signings, we could be in with a real chance of success. The wrong manager and the wrong signings could see us set back for the next 10 years.

If only we could trust the people in charge.

Kevin Tully, vision is exactly the word to use. You would hope the Board just doesn't so something that is easy and cheap.

We are in a position of strength in that we are free to pick a quality manager if we do it right. We have plenty of time. Pre-season doesn't start until the start of July. The new season doesn't start until mid August. We also have a very attractive wage packet on offer. We are also beholden to no one and are not obliged to pick any one person.

However, considering our finances, it is as much a precarious position we are starting from as a position of strength. Get the manager wrong and we will fade away very quickly.

James Stewart
698 Posted 09/05/2013 at 20:42:42
Bilic is a top class manager who would be a coup. Who cares what he did as a player I would welcome him.

Laudrup is a massive gamble. Yes they won the cup but have been pretty garbage in the league. He might be great but I'm not sure its a gamble worth taking.

Martinez doesn't even deserved to be linked with the job. Looks like he will finally take Wigan down. I really don't get the hype with this guy.

Tony Marsh
706 Posted 09/05/2013 at 20:30:49
I am petrified by some of the names at the head of the betting market. Phil Neville, Mark Hughes etc. I believe Martinez is a good manager capable of working under tight budgets constraints and keeping a two-bob rugby town like Wigan in the Premier League prove he can do a job I am not arsed about Moyes leaving as I think the Moyes Myth will be cruelly exposed next season when Davey Boy is expected to win every game playing attacking football. In Europe, he will get murdered by the Klopps and Guardiolas of this world.

What will RVP say having to play back to goal for 90 mins while expected to run the channels. RVP goal tally will dry up quicker than the Everton transfer kitty in the January window.

I still can't believe Utd have actually done it to be honest. It's a gamble of MASSIVE proportions, like selling your house, car, jewellery and raiding the kids piggybank and walking in the Casino and putting the lot on your lucky number type gamble. We all know the Man Utd job is way too big for Moyes at the moment. Moyes may be many of the things the pundits are calling him but he ain't no winner. Not the type of winner Man Utd expect anyhow.

I give Moyes 2 years tops before he is shifted out, unless of course SAF is holding his hand for the first season or two... When it comes down to DM making the decisions then Man Utd fans will be all over him... Oh, PLEASE take Steve Round with you Dave FFS,.

I wanted Moyes gone for a number of years but I am not daft enough to realise he has turned the club around and he leaves Everton in a better position than when he took over and I concur with Kevin Tully, this is a massive opportunity to build on the foundations Moyes has built and drive the club forward.

With an experienced attack minded European manager who knows how far we could go but it is down to Billy Boy to pick him and the way he has been shuffling around and simpering to the media you would not have any confidence in him.

Lets aim high and see just who we can get we might be surprised but stay clear of the Championship dross and the old Scots club.

Here is my top 10 candidates anyone of these and we would be laughing

Frank Rijkaard
Felix Magath
Marcelo Bielsa
Michael Laudrup
Rene Girard
Marco Van Basten
Diego Simeone
Vitor Pereria
Frank de Boer
Roberto di Matteo

Surely we pay better than them.

I'd have no qualms in seeing Rafa in situ at Goodison. I don't care he used to manage them.

They sacked him. Surely he has a point to prove. Where better place to?

That said, he's not a fool and could easily see through the phoney that is Bill Kenwright.

I'll go leftfield and throw the name of Frank Rijkaard into the mix. He's available and I've heard he's been looking for a job in England, and is a former Champions League and La Liga winner as a manager.

NO to Roberto Martinez. Why would we want someone who looks like taking Wigan down? Overrated.

Why would we want Benitez? Apart from his insulting behaviour the one major failing he has is that he is rubbish in the transfer market! Throw in the fact that he is another defensive minded manager and its a massive no for me.

Manager of Napoli is Walter Mazzarri, been there since 2009 and seems to have done a good job, previously the manager of Sampadoria. I don't know enough about his management style or have watched enough of Napoli to make a proper judgement on him.

Watching all the hype today, I had to think twice: is this our ex-Everton manager they are on about "great record bringing young players through", "plays attacking football'', "shrewd signings" blah blah blah...

I sacked my season ticket 3 years ago because of the shite old Ginger Nuts served up – not because of the board who "never gave him money". This man cannot handle top class players – fact! His tactics are naive and always reverts to type whatever, for every rough diamond he unearths (Arteta) and a flop to counter it (Krøldrup, Davies, Richard Wright, Beattie... the list is endless.

Don't believe the hype, I saw through this chancer 3 years ago and he has got worse since. It will be hilarious watching him bottle it in the CL with Round and his cronies all speaking into their hands wondering what the fuck to do...

Example:– the other day in the derby, Rodgers took about 5 seconds to make a substitution during a throw-in. Later on, the headmaster took nearly 10 minutes boring Jelavic with his insane instructions before he decides to send a striker on... tactical genius?

As for his record with strikers , he has fucked everyone of them up – from Rooney, Beattie, Johnson, Yakubu and now Jelavic all ending up on the wing. They all can't be shite..., the turn-around in Jelavic's form is down to the "Moyessiah"

Yes, he did steady the ship and raised the standard compared to what went before... but he is no great manager, fuck him.

David, they don't care as long as the football is attractive. They are happy to drop 10 places in the league and the £8m a year that goes with on the off chance we might win a cup. After all trophies are more important than long term survival.
Jimmy Kelly
555 Posted 10/05/2013 at 15:27:11
What's all this about attractive wages and paying £4m a year?

Surely this was only done specifically because Moyes was a 'safe' manager who the board trusted completely to take us to a good (in their opinion) position, was not going to get sacked and was also set to get us maximum compensation when a top club inevitably came in for him (which has been neatly sidestepped). I can't see a new manager getting the same amount straight away as the board won't have the same 'guarantees' from them.

I also have to say it's hilarious to see the likes of Tony Marsh getting their excuses in early 'He'll definitely fail, but if he doesn't it will be because of someone else and absolutely not because I was wrong about him'.

Ross, no offence but that's just rubbish.

Pereira, for example, has achieved what exactly? He's taken over a side which had won 7 of the previous 9 championships and 5 of the previous 9 domestic cups and taken them to one championship and no cups in 2 years (granted he may get the 2nd title if results go their way to overtake Benfica). More than Moyes will ever achieve? Maybe, but I doubt Moyes will fail to win a single trophy at United, and if he does fail there he'll still walk into a top job elsewhere just for having Utd on his cv.

Don't get me wrong, i'm not saying Pereira's not a good shout but he's hardly redefining football, nor is Laudrup, with finishing 9th and winning a much derided trophy this season pretty much being his biggest achievement in management. Similarly, while Moyes (who's not good enough for us remember) was being courted by possibly the biggest club in world football, Girard was touting himself as a possible manager at a championship club in England.
