Starting again with a Blanc canvas

 Comments (34) jump to end

There are many names that the bookies and fellow Evertonians are suggesting are in the running or should be the next manager of our great club. One name I have not seen mentioned in any articles, blogs or on TW who I believe should be seriously considered as the next manager of the mighty blues is that of Laurent Blanc.

Currently unemployed but previously having been manager of the French national team and prior to this manager of Bordeaux. Blanc managed to win the Ligue 1 title and League Cup in only his second season in management, his first season in charge Bordeaux finished runners up.

There may be those of you that will question the quality of the French league compared to the Premier League but before you do please read the excerpts below some direct comments from Blanc himself and some stats from articles written from his time in charge at Bordeaux:

"For me, playing football means having the ball, conjuring moves, harnessing your strengths, posing problems to your opponents, scoring goals and taking risks," he said last week. "Obviously I want my team to win, but I also want them to play ball. That's a state of mind, a fundamental principle, and Manchester United and Barcelona share it."

Bordeaux were down in fifth after Week 27, but they won their last 11 matches, a French record, with their final victory sending Caen into Ligue 2. "We worked so hard on our fitness back in January to be fit for this part of the season," said Blanc, "and that's what made the difference in the end."

It was not the only difference: this season, Bordeaux were unbeaten at home (their last defeat at Stade Chaban-Delmas was in October 2007), and earned 12 more points at home than the runners-up, Marseille; they showed huge mental strength, not least in the nine-man 1–0 win over Grenoble in Week 6, the comeback from 3–0 down to beat Monaco away 4–3 in Week 19 and, in Week 33, the 3–2 win at Rennes after having a player dismissed in the first half-hour. Their youth policy is working, as evidenced by the emergence of young local talents such as Benoît Trémoulinas and Grégory Sertic and their recruitment has been spot on, as the yo-yo pairing of two Yoanns – Gourcuff and Gouffran – proved on Saturday night.

Blanc had taken France to Euro 2012 on a high, with their 23-match unbeaten run only ended by a 2-0 defeat to Sweden in the last group game of the competition.

Maybe it's just me being too optimistic but if we are going to push on as a club with the foundations that Moyes has laid I think we could do a lot worse than appointing Blanc.

There is a good mix in the current squad of aged heads in the form of Distin, Jags and Osman with the flair of Pienaar, Mirallas, Baines and Fellaini along with the likes of Barkley, Coleman, Vellios, Duffy, Bidwell, Lundstram, Stones etc in the youth set-up that would give Blanc something to really work with to create a solid platform to build off. I would hope he would also be able to get Jelli firing again!

My thoughts are that if the club are going to try and retain the best players that the appointment of a manager with a solid reputation and proven track record is a must.

Lets just hope the hierarchy at Goodison are truly listening to what the fans think!

Yep, tell that to BK. I'd be happy with Blanc, De Boer, Pereira or Rijkaard. Simeone as well would be good.

Another example of a good manager out of work. There is simply no need to go trawling around the likes of Stubbs and Weir. BK the Bottomfeeder!

I agree Ross. All those names would do me. No guarantees of success and they could fail to get to grips with the Premier League (and many good managers do) but I wouldn't blame Bill if we get one of these and it goes wrong - whereas if we promote from within and it goes wrong then BK takes the blame for not being brave enough (and the rest of the Board - who seem to be on the Board but actually say and do nothing - why is Everton a basket case off the field!).

I would be happy to see one of those names with Neville/Ferguson/Stubbs/Sheedy all part of set up too. That would bring continuity and familiarity and Blue Passion.

My point entirely Ben, on a different thread. Let's play safe and be managed by a group of Moyes loyalists and ex managers? Who said change is good? Probably some French hippie philosopher. Let's maintain the course and the status quo and hope we win something this century.

Good call. This is the calibre of people we should be aiming for, at least initially. Sadly it's all too plausible that BK is weighing up Stubbs or Mackay as we speak.

The latest rumour Sam is Weir, Freedman is coming in towards 3rd favourite now.

Weir? Great. That's it. I'm off. Where's me coat?

Right Colin, we're ready, I'll meet you at the Pier Head in half an hour, I'm ready for my headfirst dive into the Mersey.

Yes definitely worth consideration and there really is no excuse not to get in a quality experienced continental manager, with progressive ideas on how to play the game. As I said on another thread though the problem is the competency of the people who are carrying out the recruitment exercise. I think they need to hire someone to carry out the exercise for them or more to the point they should have been carrying out this exercise for the last 12 months just in case Moyes did leave.

This is madness, it's just like the transfer window when names are thrown about yet fuck all happens. Fer and Ofoe being the latest. Your new Everton boss is already sorted so stop all this and accept Desperate Dave has given Pip and a pal the nod and Weepy Bollocks has swallowed it. Look at the clues, FFS.

Moyes has already let slip the new guy is young and Kenwright has said Moyes won't let us down. Rumour after rumour surfacing that it's an inside job. Pip has said he is weighing up options and defo wont be playing again after saying he wanted to carry on playing?

BK can't afford a top name or big wages so please just get ready for the most underwhelming announcement in our recent history. Fancy Dan foreign coaches... ha ha — we've got no chance.

We once had a player, I saw him again recently and he still inspired in me the same aura of greatness - of what Everton is all about.

I used to stand there is awe of his magic - and I idolised him.

He was Alex Young - the Golden Vision.

Everton then were GREAT- they had the VISION the Golden Vision.

If ever Everton needed a Golden Vision now is the time - we should follow our dreams (I know of one who already has) we should have the courage to reach for the stars and not settle for mediocrity.

Blanc sounds like a good start.

I'm embarrassed to say that I thought about Blanc but thought he was in charge of the national team. I've obviously not kept up with French football enough.

Brendan, great shout. I'm sure Fergie has even tipped Blanc as a top future manager. I'd like to see some of the current ex-players/coaches kept involved and more importantly our scouting network.

Blanc for the blues. (or Bielsa).

A name I have heard being bandied about is indeed a Manager from abroad, with worldwide experience, International experience, and Premiership experience, winning 17 trophies including League and Cup Doubles in 3 different countries. His name is Sven Goran Eriksson this would fit in nicely with one of the back room staff sitting alongside him for a couple of years before taking over.
Ross Edwards

Bielsa. Hammer BK by email, phone, anything to get him in.

John are you mad? Can you imagine the headlines, "Sven caught fondling the toffee lady in BK's office".

He'd be after them as well no doubt. Sven's a bit of lad behind that cool , goofy , Scandinavian image.

One great thing about our club is whoever is named manager, every Evertonian will support him. I remember when Moyes was named manager and thinking ffs were in trouble here, but I supported him like every other Evertonian and he did a great job. We are not fickle supporters like Chelsea fans we are chosen.

I'm with Tony on this one; this has eclipsed all the transfer windows because we are at a pivotal moment when all the negatives of the DM regime (we take all the positives like stability, points haul over a season, decent transfer record etc, as read) could be swept away by the right appointment IF — and its a big 'if' — Bill and the Board knew their arse from their elbow.

I don't have a problem with Neville, Ferguson, Stubbs or Sheedy being on board to help with educating a new Manager on the club, the Premier League, and eg playing away at Leeds/Oldham (or at home v Wigan) in the cup, but just can't see the board going to the next level with all the quality European Managers available as highlighted on all these threads.

The only surprising thing is we're doing this at the end of the season and not a week before one starts.

Another thought inducing well written piece backed up with facts and evidence.

But I agree with Marshy on this one.

Bill and that board couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery and putting half as much thought or effort as the posts on here into choosing our next manager seems well beyond them.

Lewis Morrison
641 Posted 18/05/2013 at 23:09:16
Stu #578 that attitude is exactly why Kenwright will choose the cheap, ex player, mini Moyes option!

Yes we will support the new manager but let's make our voices heard and force Kenwright to give us the manager we really want to support?

If Lyndon's latest poll points to a clear TW favourite will everyone get behind that one candidate?

He certainly talks a good game and his results aren't too shabby. It should happen but won't, much too off the all for Bill.

I see Marinez is now clear favourite at 6/4 with the next best at 6/1.

I know this is forever changing but that's pretty strong.

Mike Green
686 Posted 19/05/2013 at 08:44:10
It is Shane.

One of the things that worries me is that in the top 10 in the betting very few have won anything as managers.

Martinez has the FA Cup, Vitor Periera and Neil Lennon also have silverware but in leagues where their clubs have a definite advantage.

The favourites for the Everton job are, by and large, rookies, which is probably preferably to has-beens but you know what they say - 'has beens have'. Depressing.

Dennis Stevens

The sort of candidates highlighted in Ross's first response would be the type of appointment one would hope for but not expect of this Board. Might an internal appointment be too risky for the Board? Many of the popular suggestions in the media are even worse. Trying to play it safe might ultimately be more risky than being bold.

Another good post with a decent proposal for the next person to take over as our manager.

I truely believe that us fans are putting in far more time, effort and thought into this appointment than our Chairman has.

I think some of us are almost 24/7 on this. If Bill really is looking towards the backroom staff then he really is a twit and not fit to make a decision of this magnitude.

Ben Jones

I doubt Simeone is going to leave a team with the main striker of Falcao to a team with the main striker of Anichebe.

Blanc's a good shout though, plus has had a few years of playing in the Prem. Surprised he hasnt been up there.

Chris Morris
399 Posted 20/05/2013 at 18:47:38
It's important, I think, that whoever gets appointed is big enough and brave enough to allow the better players we have to express themselves. Moyes had his faults and the biggest I thought was he was too rigid all the time. The next man hopefully can allow a different style to flow

Blanc is a cracking shou, but I don't think we'll appoint a footballing "Big Name"

Tony Marsh, I am often entertained by your moans and groans, and on the vast majority of occasions disagree with your view.

However, this time I have this awful feeling that you are correct and instead of being excited by the possibility of a new manager/coach ,can envisage the possibility of an inside appointment with increasing trepidation and a terrible foreboding of what is to come......
