New manager's salary

 Comments (27) jump to end

Like everyone else, I am waiting and hoping for the announcement of the new Everton manager to be someone who will be inspiring and of a high caliber. What I am confused about is posters on here who are saying we cant' afford Mr A or Mr Z etc.

If Moyes was on £3 million or so a year then surely we have the financial clout to entice any of the foreign names being suggested. Would Bielsa, Bilic, Blanc, Pereira, etc not be enticed by £2 million or so a year and a Premier League challenge? Seems like a complete no-brainer to me.

The stumbling block as most would agree is Bill Kenwright. Will he show some vision and balls? I mean, if he as been paying the departing manager £3 million pa then how can we not pay the new guy likewise if we have to? I am hoping just once he will make a decision that most of us will be salivating over with renewed optimism for next season...

Part of Kenwright's logic in paying DM so much was that it was more cost effective to pay a big salary to a manager who can turn iron into gold rather than using the cash on the team and hiring a lesser manager. The new plan based on his comments about the "man being close to Everton" seems to be to spend nothing on either the team or the manager. With that being said, none of us can reach any kind of consensus on the new coach. Rafa wouldn't work because he only does well when he has money and he is a red. O'Neill same story but less successful, Hughes same story but even worse. Martinez can't defend and as for the Porto coach - he is the first Porto coach in living memory who has struggled to keep the once mighty Benfica at bay. Malky MacKay, Stuart McCall, Dougie Freedman have all had a couple of decent seasons but none of them have done as well as Mike Walker did in his two seasons at Norwich and we know how that turned out. So with all of that being said, there is a certain logic that says we should bring in an Evertonian who understands the club and who is passionate rather than someone who will try to use us as a stepping stone. By an Evertonian I mean Dunc rather than a plastic Evertonian like Phil Neville who would leave Everton in a heartbeat if Man U came knocking.

Kieran you might want to look at that Portugese final table and the 2-1 game vs Befica which virtually decided the title before you come out with the unable to keep Benfica at bay. Walker was always going to be a disaster as he inherited the Norwich team he had and claimed the glory, similar to David Brent and Swansea that one.

Wasnt Moyes on 4 million? And he got there through bonus' and wage rises, so if he starts a new manager on that wage, there is no scope for improvement for the new gaffa! No monetary targets etc

Salary won't come in to it; whoever Bill picks will be someone who'll cover his arse and go along with the lies and bullshit....

Phil Neville!

The cost of one manager should not be a deterrent to getting the best man available.

If we want to be a top 4 club we have to think and act like one not like a championship side that is hoping to retain its status in the premiership.

We need inspiration not perspiration.

Pereira, Hiddinck, De Boer, Rijkaard, Bielsa etc.

Nothing less should even be considered.

We need to better Moyes not more of the same with a less experienced manager.

Unless they are happy to pick up players for small potatoes, what is the point ? It's a nice thought and everything..

Sadly, Jay, there isn't a hope in hell of anyone on your list. This will be cheap and uninspiring.

Gavin

I didn't say "unable" I said "struggled" and he did struggle right down to the 11th hour when they stole it. To me, winning a league when your only competition is from a team that is half decent about once every 25 years isn't reason enough for me to want to hire you as a manager. Regardless, Kenwright seems to have eyes for someone else.

Sadly Andy I tend to agree with you but at this stage we can dream about new owners and a top class manager even if it is fantasyland.

There's one manager I haven't seen being touted for the managers job, and that's Di Matteo. I thought he did a great job at WBA, playing some nice football, with balance. He did a decent job at Chelsea but the writing was on the wall after a bad start. He's young, foreign and knows the Premier League. I think he would be a good fit for us, and we would be a good fit for him.

The case against promoting from within is pretty simple. If the one 'within' is so good how come we have played such boring defensive shite for far too much of the season? Or are we to believe that even being so good they were not able to stand up to Moyes and advise him when he was wrong? If so, then they do not have the decisive strong personality needed to manage at the highest level.

But we haven't played boring defensive shite for most of the... oh why do I bother?

Despite that, you do make a decent case against. If the new man is going to see the flaws that existed in Moyes's game, and for me that's reliance on experience over ability, then how can we hope for that from people who were part of that philosophy?

Any top Foreign manager would surely be more interested in the transfer kitty Bill Talkshite could give them which they could use to bring in a 20 goal a season striker in order to challenge for the top four. Darren Bents out of favour and would be my main target.

There all greedy bastards and whoever we do bring in hopefully comes in sooner rather than later and is able to keep what we already have.

Its important we get the best we possibly can but if we don't spend fairly big on players and strengthen a tiny and ageing squad then we could be competing amongst the mid table shite that's in the Prem.

I think the 'we can't afford' lines that have been going around are not to do with salary but more to do with rumoured compensatyion payments such as the apaprent 10 million it would take to prise Laudrup away.

Well, Bielsa's free. Why not show that word BK doesn't have in his vocab. Oh Yes, Ambition.

Laudrup started on £500k a year at Swansea before signing a new contract for £2m a year. Moyes was one of the best paid managers in world football and him going takes a lot of pressure off our wage bill.

I don't understand why people think we would offer a new manager the same wages as Moyes was being paid. Anything around £1-2m a year would be more than enough to attract a top young hungry manager, with the chance of managing one of the biggest clubs in England.

The money is not the problem — the fact that BK is a fool is. I can just picture him appointing someone who'll play the nice lap dog and not ask any difficult questions.

I have a relative whose girlfriend works as a waitress at GP. She heard two vips talking and 1 said the other that the next manager will be internal.

Has anyone noticed that Jurgen the German has suddenly popped up as second favourite to be named Everton manager in the last hour or so?

Duncan - I was just about to ask the same question. Can't find anything substantial to connect JK and EFC on a Google search. Has somebody spotted him in the Everton Two shop?

Yeah its a bit of an odd one Mike... something to do with a lot of large bets being placed Stateside. Didn't think he and T How gone got on so well though during his time as US manager?

Only link that I can see is Klinsmann starting to follow Everton on Twitter. Surely that's proof positive that he's going to be our new manager (...just as an overheard conversation from a friend's relative's girlfriend is definitive that the appointment will be internal)!
Chris Jones
533 Posted 20/05/2013 at 22:39:56
Like many of us, I've got real concerns about an internal appointment. Few people are mentioning Steve Round, but for me, he's the most likely internal candidate with an ex-player as assistant. The biggest problem with any of the "internals" is around attracting new signings of the quality we need to break the European qualification monopoly. Even if we found the money to buy someone like Negredo, can any of you see a player like that being inspired to come to a club managed by someone with no track record like Neville or Stubbs??

Jeez, Bill - show some ambition, PLEASE!

Give the job to Fergies son... It seems like Man utd have been calling the shots, it's like a soap opera like Corrie or something. Oh sorry, Bill, I didn't mean to be sarcastic...

We could save an awful lot of the manager's salary if Nike paid it. Klinsmann has Nike connections doesn't he? Klinsmann doesn't do defending, but handily enough there are plenty of defensive coaches at Everton to balance that – oh dear, that's also an argument for Martinez!

Don't forget the owner of Jacksonville Jaguars is about to buy us – another American connection. If Nike make their kit then I'm off to the bookies...

- Just watching Martinez celebrating his cup win in Wigan. He was answering questions about next season and wouldn't commit either way. At one point said 'whoever is in charge everything is set up wonderfully here blah blah..'. Seems he'll be meeting with Bradley Hardacre next week to discuss 'the future'.
