Waiting for Roberto?

 Comments (62) jump to end

Talk to any Wigan fan and they will tell you that Sunday can`t come quick enough because that`s when Roberto Martinez will tell Dave Whelan whether or not he`s moving to Everton.

Note: Moving to Everton, not Stoke or anywhere else. If you believe the Pie-eaters grapevine that is, an offer that has been on the table since Moyes decided to move `up the scale` as long ago as last Christmas.

Now, this isn`t a new experience for the Wigan loyalists. They went through it last year when Villa (and, maybe, the RS) waited on their man`s decision and the year before that it was somebody else.

But as an Evertonian who works in their midst, I care little for their angst, worrying more about how this heart-stopping drama will impact on my club. Should Bill Kenwright be giving his reported first choice (I do realise whoever is eventually appointed will be paraded as such) so much time to make up his mind? Should not someone who gets the call be so enthused by the opportunity that they can`t wait to get started – à la David Moyes at Old Trafford?

My old man told me last night that the Club has gone through this scenario before. Apparently, post-Catterick, Jimmy Armfield of Bolton took over three weeks to decide whether he was up to the Everton challenge .....and then bottled it! As a result, John Moores looked at all the Everton old boys and appointed Billy Bingham!

Now I guess I'd be happy with Roberto – not ecstatic but happy – and the same goes for Perreira or Mackay but it worries me that nobody seems to be knocking Bill`s door down to get started. Is it that they are only lukewarm about the job or just that the money on offer is not very appealing?

Perhaps Pip will tell us when he gets the job!

Or maybe there are 1000's knocking on the door. No matter what we think I believe it is still a big job in football and there will be plenty wanting this job. Not long to see the answers I guess/hope.

I pray that the rumour mill is right and we are getting Perreira, don't get me wrong, he could be awful too and just another Johnny come lately but Martinez record in the PL is PROVEN to be abysmal and would just smack too much of the easy media option for Billy No Balls. Perreira however, even if he turned out to be shite, would at least show he has a little bit of vision and gumption and is up with the modern game that the top few clubs show in appointing up and coming foreign managers in the mould of your Mourinhos, Villas Boas, Ancelotti, etc etc The sort that are proven winners but just haven't done it in the PL yet.

I know the Martinez thing is extremely divisive but for me he is just a manager that got Wigan relegated, nearly did it 3 times before that and did worse at that club than the likes of Paul Jewell and Steve Bruce !!

Whoever gets the job, I will reserve my judgement until at least 10 games in if not 'til after Christmas. We are entering the unknown with any appointment so I can't see why the excitement is justified with any of the two or three favoured candidates. I am generally an optimist in life, but in this particular matter I can only see us struggling to maintain even 6 position in the coming years regardless of who we get.

Indeed Mick, I feel the same. It will be very interesting to see how we fare under a new manager and will settle a few historical arguments as to wether Moyesie was good for the club or the dour negative money grabbing anti Christ some people on here like to paint him as. I for one think he did an amazing job for us, deserves the recognition he got, how many manager of the years ? followed by being given one of the biggest jobs in football.

But whoever comes in, if they are given the "backing" by Kenwright and the board that Moyes was will do well to emulate anything he did for us. And I would also think that if they do emulate or surpass him will be snapped up by another club a lot sooner than the 11 years Moyes spent with us. Some people have very short "Premier league" memories or simply choose to ignore the laughing stock we were pre Moyes ! Yes, I can remember the 80's too but football is a different game altogether now, so catch up, get with the present day and reality, MONEY TALKS !

That's why football continues to create excitement, because we have chairmen and boards who are clueless... Martinez is probably a nice guy, but he is essentially Mcleish, playing attractive football.
Is nominating the inexperienced dangerous? Looking at Wolves, it certainly looks like it.
I think - given our circumstances - it's worth promoting from within, but find an experienced deputy for the new guy. My heart says Duncan, but my head says Stubbs. Stubbs has done well with the reserves, playing attacking football. He's Blue, and is not totally without coaching experience. Weir could be a deputy of sorts.
So, it might pay off if we get Stubbs plus an experienced old head - not many of them around available, maybe Warnock? And then allow Sheedy and Weir to come onto the 1st team. Big Dunc can take over the 18s, learn his trade a little more and then come on board.

Without doubt the most obvious 'I heart Davie" piece posing as an opinion on another subject since Moyes left.

Well Eugene, simpletons often sit there grinning. It was not an "I heart Davie" piece as you would like to call it but if it makes you happy categorising it like that then do so, its nice to make people smile :-)

Just for the record, I thought Moyes did quite well as Evertoon manager, he quite often made me furious with shit mind boggling subsitutions or somewhat negative tactics and very often fell short in big games as his record testifies too. But I also happen to think that anyone that denies he did well for us considering where we were before he took over, in terms of PL history, is living in denial, but that's just my opinion.

Portugese press are reporting that Vitor Pereira has agreed to join Everton on a 2 year deal, which will be announced imminently.

He was in London yesterday for talks with Billy & Co, apparently and has verbally agreed already.

Thank God for that - I really hope we've avoided Martinez, who would have been a huge mistake in my opinion. Massively overrated manager would have made us relegation fodder like he did to Wigan.

The Whelan interview would seem to rule out Martinez.

Earlier today a newspaper hack suggested that Everton were looking for a manager who would run the whole show in the manner of David Moyes. This casts doubts over Pereira who is just a coach.

Anyway, whoever it is, once they are appointed, I wil get behind them from the off as we all will I'm sure (until things go downhill!). Plenty of excitement and debates ahead regardless of who it is.

The new manager is definitely going to have to be given a grace period by the fans to impose his style and create his team. I wonder how patient the fan base will be and especially us ToffeeWebbers. If it is a popular appointment there will be a greater grace period given, if unpopluar this will be less so.

Unproven candidates are a greater gamble, but all eventual great managers had to start somewhere. Bring it on!

Hear hear Mick.
I think that any manger coming in is going to need some time to settle in and I don't mean a few games. My gut feeling is that Pereira has a holistic approach to management (as did Moyes). So, it would take a while for him to get his methods and players in place. Many great managers (including SAF and our own HK) suffered set backs & fan disapproval early in their career but went on to great success afterwards. I guess this is more aimed at non-EPL managers who are likely to take some time to learn and adjust.

Martinez is due to let Whelan know this morning whether he's staying or going. So maybe today's the day the teddy bear's have their picnic? Note: in this scenario, teddy bears R us. I'd like a nice picnic, as long as the weather holds up. Er, now where was I?

The way the Martinez/Whelan meeting is being reported suggests we have not offered RM the job, or firmly signalled that he is in with a chance. Perhaps he was expecting to have been approached by now? One thing is clear: in the (unlikely) event that he says he's staying at Wigan, we can cross his list off our shortlist.

There's been a big TW swing towards Pereira, but I am still firmly in the Martinez camp. Come on, Roberto, let's be having you!

Ernie Baywood
845 Posted 23/05/2013 at 10:02:11
Regarding the comment that its a concern that people don't seem to be knocking the door down to get the job... I'm not sure we're that sort of club anymore. We're not a club that any useless clown thinks he has a chance with, we're a top side. So the Svens, ONeills, Hughes' might express an interest but they won't be in the papers every day - they know we're out of their league and don't want to embarrassed by having the world tell them that.

We're picking from a fairly narrow band of manager. Up and coming British based or possibly proven in a lesser league. These guys are a bit better than the merry go round managers who spout off every time 'Midtable Athletic' are looking for a new coach.

We're well and truly off the merry go round that goes on below us.

Coming into work this morning (in Leigh),the concensus amongst Wigan followers is that Martinez is on his way to Everton. Most see yesterday`s SSN appearances/features by/on Whelan and BK as an orchestrated charade to cover a done deal.
As one put it,`Roberto`s a great bloke but he puts us through this every summer. he needs to commit to our project (ugh!) or fuck off`.
I can`t imagine he will quit Wigan without having a job to go to,but who knows?

James Marshall

I have a feeling the Martinez announcement that's due today, will not be that he's leaving for Everton, it's more likely to be whether he's staying or leaving Wigan, with no further information than that.

In my opinion, Martinez would be a huge backward step - he's a hugely overrated manager to my mind, flirting with relegation every year, never addressing their obvious flaw in defending. During their time in the PL they only won 6 games a season under Martinez. 6!?

That's just not good enough and I've never understood what all the fuss is about.

He could go to Malaga (please!) with Pelligrini coming to City by the looks of things. We should appoint Pereira - he's a free agent, comes from the Mourinho/AVB mould and though a gamble, he's a much better gamble than anyone else that's been mentioned. I would have said Laudrup as first choice but it'll never happen, nor will Klinsmann though I'd like that too.

I continue to pray it's not Martinez....or Stubbs.....or Weir.....or Round.....or Neville.....or any of them!

When you take a step back for a moment, appointing a manager who just got his team relegated may not be the smartest move. Wigan also had the joint worst goals conceded in the league last year (granted he won the cup against the odds). There is a lot of hype about many of the candidates, but is any of it justified? I am not saying Martinez will do badly at Everton but at the same time, I wouldn't be calling with enthusiasm for his appointment.

"BBC Sport's Ben Smith learns that Wigan chairman Dave Whelan and manager Roberto Martinez have held "extremely constructive" talks, but no decision on Martinez's future will be made today. Smith adds that the pair will reconvene at the start of next week - either on Monday or Tuesday - with Whelan wanting to see if he can fulfil a number of requests from his manager relating to the construction of a new training ground and the academy." http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/22635066

Sounds like he's keeping his options open, waiting for BK to officially approach Wigan. He evidently doesn't want to resign without another job lined up.

Martinez now supposed to be recovening with Whelan next Monday or Tuesday, apparently over requests made by Martinez re: the academy and a new training ground (BBC Sport). Does he actually WANT the Everton job? Get Pereira in pronto!
Richard Dodd
919 Posted 23/05/2013 at 14:07:10
With Davey apparently happy to carry on in a part-time capacity until he departs for his holiday in mid-June,I guess there`s no particular hurry for BK to make an appointment.Whereas Man Unt. clearly had everything in place in respect of SAF`s successor,BK sees no such urgency-trusting his dear friend to keep half an eye on things whilst he spends much of his time at OT.

Much more important to get it right. To this end it seems likely that soundings have been made with Martinez and Pereira and,I suspect,Mackay. Only the Portugese is free to make an instant decision so plenty of time to `do the right thing by giving` the in-house guys` the chance to make their pitch.

Meanwhile, here in Wigan, the locals are still convinced Roberto will take the job but is stringing Whelan along whilst he seems to prevaricate.Personally,I`m not so sure-both whether he`s up for the challenge or the right guy for the job.

The longer this goes on,the more likely it will turn out to have been a charade by which BK, with his great love of drama, takes us through all the emotions, sets false trails and then HOMES IN on the `suspect`who has been under our noses all the time.
Call for Stubbs/Weir/Neville. They`ll carry on in `the Everton way`.

We should have known!

James... because given our circumstances we need an innovator a man of vision not another run of the mill play it cagey merchant.

You either listen to Wigan fans who recognise the inevitability of their plight given the drastic reduction of their wage bill from the previous regimes or you don't.

Given the regular financial excuses for our previous manager it seems a staggering oversight notably by many who would trumpet said excuses the loudest.

Adhering to principles which long term might make Wigan stronger and more successful just as his foundations did at Swansea is unique in the contemporary english game. Martinez is a man of vision and genuine principle borne out by evidence not media hype.

The choice to ignore these points not to mention the FA cup win and concentrate on the inevitable relegation is either ignorant or agenda filled.

The clamour for a man of zero experience in the english game, "vitor", is FM game playing taken to the nth degree - no-one knows him from jack shit all the info is off the web and it really is Christian Gross mk2 in the making.

Lucky dip mangement if you ask me - Martinez is the man for us and has been for a few years - as I've repeatedly said.

Richard Dodd

Yes,Michael,I have certainly changed my views on Bill Kenwright. As for a specific reason, it surrounds the appallingly amateur way in which he dealt with the whole Blue Union situation last year. The meeting in his office, the marches and the car park demo could all have been turned into positive situations had he the vaguest idea what his role as chairman of this great club demands of him.
That, in a word ,is LEADERSHIP-a quality so sadly lacking in a man who feels able to justify holding office via occasional soundbites and emotional outbursts.
Don`t start me on his inability to control and direct an AGM and his subsequent defranchising of the shareholders,a move which demonstrates his total contempt for so many supporters whose holdings had been passed on through generations of Evertonians before the Boys` Pen was even thought of.

My swing in support has nothing to do with the rights and wrongs of King`s Dock or Destination Kirby but everything to do with his total abrogation of responsibility `in the face of friendly fire`. In short he is a man not fit to govern.
Everton demands more of its chairman than the tears of a clown!

Now back to this manager nonsense.......
