Do they need to change the rules?

 Comments (5) jump to end

The Premier League and Football League both have rules concerning the ownership/directorship of the football clubs under their jurisdictions. People cannot fulfill dual roles at different clubs. However the last few weeks have shown that, when it comes to club managers – and despite a potential massive conflict of interest - the same rules do not apply.

Since Sir Alex Ferguson announced his retirement as Manchester United manager, his replacement David Moyes is effectively managing both Everton and Man Utd in the same League. In the meantime the following incidents (that we know of) have occurred:

At Man Utd: 1. Moyes has visited Carrington to meet his future players despite being employed by Everton. 2. Rio Ferdinand’s has signed a contract extension 3. Two United coaches have been sacked

At Everton: 1. Leon Osman has signed a new two-year contract.

All these decisions were probably taken by one man, yet they affect both clubs. For better or worse, the Osman contract extension has the biggest implication for any incoming Everton manager. While the new man may want Ossie, the truth is he might not.

In my humble opinion, when the Premier League and the Football League originally made their rules regarding owners & directors they could not have envisaged that any club would be stupid/spineless enough to allow their manager to “double job” with one of their main rivals. The rule should be amended as a matter of urgency to safeguard the integrity of football and above all to protect fans from their gormless Chairmen.

I have wanted Moyes out for a couple of seasons, I think stability without success is stagnation. That said, I have had respect for him, I’m also dour and Scottish and found him straightforward and I would have believed what he said. I felt the "not till the end of the season" contract stance was a bit disrespectful to the club but I could understand where he was coming from, as it’s his career and he’s not obligated to act like a fan.

The situation as it is now though is abhorrent. Moyes is a multi-millionaire thanks to Everton, he is now to all intents and purposes the Man Utd manager and presumably the reason some of their coaching staff have now gone. If he had any respect for Everton and his bosom buddy Kenwright, he would have walked after the last game of the season.

To be taking a wage from us when he is I'd assume considering players for Man Unt next season, possibly our players, shows a huge lack of class by the man. Additionally, are we to assume even if we appoint a new manager shortly he won’t be able to be in and around the club till after Moyes has sauntered off?

Moyes did ok, he maybe overachieved a little league position wise, he sucked generally in cups and our forays into Europe were less successful than Fulham's and Middlesbrough’s. Why he is being allowed to act like Billy Big Bollocks and do as he pleases is anyone’s guess.

I’m glad he’s away and we can start a new era, but it saddens me that I lost respect for the man who will take his 70 grand this week as he makes Man Utd decisions... appalling.

Well said Iain my sentiments exactly. The subservience being shown by Everton to Man U really sticks in my gullet. The Lame Stream EneMedias , mainly ex RS pundits opinions do too. Seems to them that its oh so important that Man U is not left managerless for even a day but as for Everton -who cares. As for Billy Liars involvement in all this disrespect , it just goes beyond belief the man is a buffoon.

But alas it seems that TW's Moyes Boys sycophancy has even endured his messy divorce from Everton .

"The Premier League and Football League both have rules concerning the ownership/directorship of the football clubs under their jurisdictions."

They do? As far as I can tell Al Capone would be allowed to own a club in this country just so long as he could come up with the readies to buy one.

It is ridiculous that Moyes is still managing Everton but until we appoint a new manager then we are contractually obliged to keep the manager we have. Hopefully if we appoint someone soon Moyes will officially leave and the new man can take over.

Interesting point mate, wasn't too happy hearing Moyes was juggling jobs myself.Wouldn't a clean break been better alround I don't see why just because they all get on and sir alex is like the god father off EPL that they can do what they want. 1- why should we still be paying him for half services as he carn't be fully commited to us.2- Moyse can still influence players as he is still in touch (kenwrights probably counting on this bye bye felaini, baines or barkley).Moyse new months ago he was going to utd thats why he didn't sign a contract, knowing man utd wouldn't go for him if a fee was involved so in reality moyse has stabbed us in the back because now we have to find a fee for a new manager and Bill will have to sell one of our stars to cover it and sweeten the new manager with a small kitty.SIR Alex payback for 95 and last seasons result costing them the title.
