Gueye answers Senegal Olympic call

Magaye Gueye is set to be included in Senegal's team for the Olympic Games in London later this month after accepting a call-up from the West African nation.

The 22 year-old was born in France and though he has played for the French U21 team, Gueye has opted to take up his eligibility for Senegal, his parents' home country.

Gueye, who broke into Everton's first team last season and notched his first goal in a Blue jersey, feels his best chances of international football are with Senegal.

He will face Team GB in the Games, too, as Senegal are in group A along with Ukraine and United Arab Emirates.

To be honest, I hope he does well and attracts attention elsewhere, France perhaps? I think I've seen all his Goodison appearances and am a long way from convinced that he's going to make it here. Its just something about his speed of thought, reaction, ability to make space. If he's got the skills, he has hardly shown them so far.

I could be badly wrong, of course, but if the first team squad is going to be tweaked in the coming weeks, he's one I don't think we'd miss.

Couldn't agree more Keith. Couldn't believe how slow he is... No quicker than Bily was... Why they kept giving him a run and not Baxter I couldn't understand. I don't think Baxter is as slow as perceived.. But that's a hunch...

Have to disagree with you David over the pace of Gueye v Baxter, the latter doesn't seem any faster than anyone he's played against and keeps hold of the ball far too long. Gueye just looks like he could do with learning the game more and looks stronger than him too.

Checking wiki which is by no means the end product but

Gueye - 22 yrs old 5'10"
Baxter - 20 yrs old 5'10"

Not much in it there, although Gueye did get decent reports from his time with the France U21s, in fact Gueye has played for France U16s through to U21s scoring 10 goals, Baxter has played for the England U16s and U17s scoring 6 goals, he seems to have tailed off since then.

I thought Gueye did a pretty good job linking-in and keeping the ball going in the games he played in, but he does lack the out and out pace to be a real attacking threat. He is powerful, strong on the ball and able to retain possession, hard working and has a pretty good shot. See him as more of a steady squad player rather than someone who will develop into a match-winner, so he is dispensable in that sense. He is young Uhowever and could possibly be moved to another midfield role to get more out of him, and hopefully the international experience will improve him as well.

Baxter is a nearly-man as far as I can judge. He has a good touch but is painfully slow and apt to get caught in possession at Premiership level. He has struggled to make an impact in every game I have seen him play in and I can't see him as a first team regular. Could easily have a great career a level lower, but can't see him developing the physical attributes he really needs and so highly unlikely to have more international exposure (though whether playing for England develops you as a player or not is highly contentious).

Think Gueye has looked promising in flashes. He has composure on the ball and can link up play well. He doesn't have the pace but I think has a future at a higher level than Baxter, who to me has not done enough on the times I've seen him play.

What's 'Seb Coe's blazer pocket' supposed to mean? Are you alluding to your deep and profound political stance on our capital city hosting the games and implying I am some Tory sympathiser?

Well we are the proverbial cauldron pot of views on sports... More caustic than toxic, but still...

As we're all entitled to our views, a precis of mine is:
- there are precious few truly amateur sports left. The Olympics has always been a complex beast, but the roots of its commercialism lie in the advent of the EPL
- the corruption in the administration of global sports events is long standing
- not all participants of said events cheat
- some sports "personalities" are more about the celebrity and the earning off that (see Andy Murray - who I don't dislike - who has Simon Fuller in the players' box) rather than the sport

But, this is an Everton forum. Where we talk about wanting to maximise on Cahill's commercial appeal in Australia, Landon in US etc.

I see the mods kicked some posts about the RS managerial vacancy into miscellaneous, so maybe there's a case for a "general" thread, like the live match forum gets somedays. I realise it's supposed to be for people who don't have access to the game (been there), but jeez sometimes..!

I really dont understand why football is an Olympic sport. That's what the World Cup is for... Tennis? – That's what the grand slams are for? I always believed it was for amateurs anyway? The sportsmen/women who need help got lottery funding to help them improve, these footballers don't need that...

I know my argument has obvious flaws, like cycling, that's what Le Tour is for, could be one... but Olympic Football? Ryan Giggs retired from internationals didn't he? (Brazil have picked a few decent players if anyone fancies a punt, by the way...)

Mark, we can all agree the Olympics has lost it's meaning.

But maybe we could get it back to basics.

People killing each other in the stadium in East London (helps keep Walthamstow and Stratford tube open). Involve wild animals, a tinpot dictator at the head of it all.

You know Sky would buy the rights.

For what it's worth, I'm going to an Olympic match at Old Trafford. I can see all sides of the arguement and it pisses me off that it's (mainly) all about London - as always. But I'm going because my son who's only 10 is getting into the Olympic thing and it gives him a chance to go to a ground like Old Trafford. Yes that does hurt, that Everton will never have a stadium like that! KIngs Dock...........if only............
