Yobo calls off Fenerbahçe move?

24/07/2012 | Comments (62)
Both a Turkish football blog and now SuperSport, citing "a source close to the Nigerian captain", claim that Joseph Yobo has called off his proposed move to Fenerbahçe "due to issues bordering on lack of communication and commitment."

The report by @turkishsoccer, who describes himself as a "freelance journalist, TV and radio producer," quotes the source as follows:

"The deal is off due to issues bordering on lack of communication and commitment. So he will be looking at other possibilities because there are no shortage of interest in him," said a very source to the defender.

It's not clear if Nigerian reporter, George Akpayen, (he reported on the impasse between the two clubs over the fee for Yobo on Monday) is the source close to the player or was the one passing on the information but Mr Akpayen has provided assurances that the quotes did come from Yobo.

Rumours elsewhere on Twitter today had suggested that a deal that looked to be 99% done had hit a late snag but the assumption was that the hitch was between the two clubs and not with the Nigerian defender.

It was widely reported earlier that Everton had accepted the Yellow Canaries' final offer of €2.5m, presumably just leaving personal terms as the final obstacle.

Update Oluwashina Okeleji of the BBC World Service, meanwhile, Tweeted on Wednesday that, according to Yobo's agent John Shittu nothing had changed regarding the defender's proposed move to Turkey and that the deal was set to go ahead pending the resolution of the last few details.

Would rather he went elsewhere after the way Fenerbahçe haggled the fee down. That would serve them right. If the price we are willing to accept is now as low as £2million then I could see a few clubs in for him.

Why can we not complete anything simply. We constantly look incompetent and ridiculous. I know Fenerbahce have a big part to play in this, but we seem to be involved in these pantomimes year in and year out with incoming and outgoing players and to be frank it's embarrassing now.

If I worked for an organisation that did business like this, I would have jumped ship by now and I'll bet there are players at Everton thinking exactly the same.

Bit harsh comments – surely it seems the Turks are the ones who are trying to pay less and less. Surely we are entitled to hold out for close to his worth? Clearly there are not a lot of other clubs interested in him and it seems they are using this to drive down the price.

Many say wait for other clubs but after two years only one club has actually come in. The club are in a no-win situation if they sold too low or if they delay and hold out. In this instance, I would rather hold out rather than be shafted.

Why can't the club let everyone know what the situation is?

An official announcement would be nice so that we know what is going on with one of our players, This clearly isn't the boards fault, Fenerbahçe and Yobo are both to blame over this transfer.

Mark #788, I suspect that the club will have allowed him time away to sort out his future as it clearly isn't at Everton.

Lyndon - would you rather sign Heitinga or Yobo? No response required.

Are the Turbanned Turks (to quote Lonnie Donnegan) likely to get him for anything like the same price, even if he wanted to go? Probably not.

We polite Brits regard haggling as a bit third world, until we come to buy or sell a house that is. This is exactly what is going on.

If J Heitinga is offered many millions of quids (in Swiss francs I would guess) for a two year contract he will be on his way, as any of us would. 'Personal terms' aren't just the amount, its where its paid into to tax evade.

And if JoYo can't sort out a deal with someone else, he will be our left back cover for a while. Not too much for his agent in that then.

None of these things are likely to happen.

Off to bed.

Mick Davies
815 Posted 25/07/2012 at 03:28:38
If Heitinga has any sense, he'd stay in a league with a lot more prestige and media exposure than go to a club which has just been sanctioned for fiddling and, above all else, shown their total lack of respect for players re the Yobo saga.

They want him, he scores a goal that wins them their first title in God knows how long, then they don't want him but will take another loan. Then they want him but won't pay the original price because he's 2 years older!!!

Everton FC is not blameless in this either. He should never have been allowed to go out on loan for a second time but kept at Goodison or sold. He is a far better player and younger than Hibbert... then again, like O'Reilly and Manuel in Fawlty Towers, Hibbert's cheap.

817 Posted 25/07/2012 at 03:49:24
These announcements usually just mean that someone is applying pressure.

Maybe it's Yobo trying to force Fenerbahce to finalise the deal and stop leaving him hanging?

Or Everton doing the same?

Or Fenerbahçe trying to issue a "take it or leave it" to us?

It doesn't necessarily mean that our club are fools who have never negotiated a transfer before. Though many will believe that out of convenience.

It seems to me that the quote has come from Yobo and the Turks are now fcuking him about as much as they have fcuked us about in the last 2 years.

We should have told them to fcuk off when they wouldn't pay the agreed fee and now Yobo's told them to fcuk off when they won't honour their agreement with him.

1. Pienaar: the sale of a player who wants to join a club, from a club who has no plans for him, for a fairly (in modern terms) insubstantial fee would be clean cut with most other clubs, but we are utterly inept in our dealings.

2. Yobo: the sale of a 31 year old centre back, who has spent most of his last two years at a football club, for a nominal fee would be a quick piece of business with most other clubs, but not Everton - a club chairmen and chief executives must dread doing business with.

#847, Mark, I'd take an alternative view. Given that our financial predicament is well documented, I'd think that clubs love dealing with us. If it's true that Baines did turn down Man U after a bid had been accepted, then I imagine our forward finances make depressing reading indeed. Who wouldn't take advantage of a distressed business?

It's common knowledge that the Turks have been taking the piss out of us on this Yobo deal for the last 2 years. Now it seems they want our Johnny. Why pay £2m for Yobo when there's a chance of our player of the season for £5m?

We should have told them to piss off last year but no-one else came in for Yobo so Fenerbahçe took the piss again and have now had a player for 2 years with no intention to buy him.

We should cut all ties with this club and just crack on with it. In the time we are dicking about with this, Pienaar will be at somewhere shit like QPR where at least they can afford his wages!!!
Dave Roberts
855 Posted 25/07/2012 at 09:44:11
I'm a little nonplussed as to how so many have assumed that this is somehow Everton's fault? The headline itself says that Yobo himself pulled the plug on the deal which he is entitled to do. It was Fenerbahce who reneged on the original deal but that said, a fee has now been agreed and it rests with the player and Fenerbahce to sort out personal terms. Everton have agreed to sell him and have no input whatsoever into subsequent negotiations regarding contractual issues between Yobo and his proposed new club. There is nothing Everton could do or not do at this stage to cause Yobo to pull out.

If the club do something ridiculous and the fact is apparent that they have done so then by all means criticize them. But to suppose that Everton are a 'laughing stock' because Yobo and Fenerbahce have not concuded a deal that Everton have no part in negotiating is ridiculous.

Jesus wept, some people will take any opportunity to have a dig at the club. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of problems at Everton but I don't really think they can be blamed for any protracted transfer fee negotiations.

If they agreed to sell Yobo for peanuts and buy PIenaar for a fortune then the wailing and gnashing of teeth on here would be incredible. The club are absolutely correct to haggle on fees – especially in these two instances as a) Yobo is an outbound player and as such does not need to integrate into the squad during pre-season & b) Pienaar is an incoming player but similarly, as someone familiar with the place, does not need the summer to bond with his new team mates – subsequently we can hold out for the best deal for the club, something I would've thought people would be happy about given our precarious financial situation.

I would be amazed if other clubs thought Everton are a laughing stock because they're negotiating transfer fees and moreover in the Yobo instance, as a few more level headed commenters have pointed out, it seems the issue here is with Yobo and Fenerbahçe. I fail to see how any of it makes Everton look 'incompetent and ridiculous'.

Also, the Indonesian tournament fiasco, while disappointing, seems to not be Everton's fault either – if, organisationally, it was a mess, then why bother?

By all means criticise the club, hold them to account as there are times when things could be done better... but for God's sake choose your battles rather than criticising anything and everything.

We should have told them to jog on years ago when they started messing us about. Good on Yobo though for calling the move off, they obviously don't value him as highly as he deserves and hopefully we'll get a better sale price from another team. And as for the rumour that Fenerbache as now set to bid for Heitinga, we should refuse to do business with them after this farce.
Paul Gladwell
861 Posted 25/07/2012 at 10:29:08
Dave we should have told them where to go twelve months ago, who loans players out for two seasons, they have took the piss big time, we may end up having to bring Yobo back as cover and selling Heitinga, if we had brought him back twelve months ago we would have surely found someone to buy him in this country for the piss poor fee we are selling him for.
Steve Brown
862 Posted 25/07/2012 at 10:37:59
Since Pienaar has been left of the Tottenham tour of the US we can safely assume a deal is close. My guess is the Cahill deal was to give us contingency on the financing of the deal if the Yobo transfer collapsed.

Think EFC and Yobo should walk away from Fenerbahche as they are are not a serious football club to do business with.

Steve Green
873 Posted 25/07/2012 at 11:09:24
Further down the line, be it for the sale of Yobo or Heitinga, would they even pay the instalments due or would they try and dip out on any structured agreement there as well.
I know what I think and it would then involve us in more farce by having to go to EUFA or FIFA, whoever it is that sorts these things, to try and enforce payment, instigate a transfer ban on them etc.
Disingenious is one word. Anyone know if the Fenebache President is a politician as well!
Gareth Fieldstead
874 Posted 25/07/2012 at 11:11:20
Steve it is reassuring to see that there are blues that are optimistic after all! If personal terms have already been discussed with the player and he has accepted them then fair enough, as it would be assumed Spurs have given the player permission to speak with us, therefore ( being presumptuous!) a deal must be close. What has me worried is the fact that players have had to be sold for this transfer to have gone ahead, current situation with Yobo would suggest the club are no longer in a position to proceed, unless Spurs accept 1 million up front from the Cahill sale. Secondly if the finances are that bad then even so called "free" transfers wont be happening, therefore no more business this close season without established players being sold. That leaves us with only one incoming player and five senior squad players gone. Somehow we have managed to leave ourselves even shorter on numbers than last season!
Mark Tanton
875 Posted 25/07/2012 at 11:30:21
Matt I think what I mean is that there is no such thing as clear cut business with Everton, and other chairmen and chief executives must clear a month in the diary just to close the smallest of deals. If it's Everton, it drags.

You two must be drunk! (Lyndon Lloyd)

You two must be drunk! Here we are talking about a club that has pissed us around for a year after the initial deal was done and a price was agreed after the loan period, yet they had to haggle the price and get us down to half the price HE was actually worth, even though he helped them win the league and cup over the last 3 seasons... Now last me ask you this DO YOU THINK WE WILL TAKE A REDUCTION IN THE PRICE TAG ON JOHNNY??? Stop drinking the bath water!!!! We need the money and the players,... Personally I hope he hasn't gone so we can park his bum on the bench and he can watch the kids being brought on instead of him... Nothing like a bit of shame to get you to leave a club! If he is holding out for more money then he deserves everything he gets...

A couple of things: #743 "I would have jumped ship by now and I'll bet there are players at Everton thinking exactly the same." — This is self-contradictory. I mean, Yobo has option to jump ship, but fecks about and doesn't jump ship. and because of the fecking about is now more likely to want to jump ship. Errr.... doesn't make sense!

And we get the same nonsense about statements (#772 and #775). What can they actually say at the moment? Do you really think sharing info about ongoing contract negotiations is the best route to take? — I mean, is it really in Everton's best interests to bang out information to all and sundry? Wont this annoy other clubs, players and agents? What about if it exposes our other plans, that we don't want to share? What if other clubs start exposing all the details their fans want to hear, but we want to keep sctum? If he stays, it will be self evident so no statement needed (he'll be back at finch farm). indeed, the club won't be able to say anything more than "no agreement could be met". and if he goes, then we'll be told.

if there is any substance re Heitinga and the Turks , forget it! Too much of a piss against the wall. Jonny would have to be hard up to even give it a moment's thought.

Hi Eric, he was Moyes's first buy and a good one at that when he first signed, apart from a couple of bad bloopers he was going to do well for us over the next 5 years! But then came the pantomime, he wanted out and got what he wanted, but a deal was done that he would go out on loan and a price was agreed at the end of the loan period,

Not only did they go back on their word, they had the balls to ask for an extension as Yobo really didn't want to come back to Everton! But hey this is Everton, instead of saying DO ONE! what do we do? Loan him out for yet another year!

In his time at that club, he managed to Win the league, win the Cup and finish a close 2nd this season in the league... Now if Everton had loaned a player like that I am sure Even we would have bought that player at the asking price....

I don't really care what Yobo wants, he is another player that was treated well at Everton and yet wanted away the first time he was asked to fight for his place.... I think Everton need to grow a pair and force there hand, give them until 2 weeks before the deadline to now come up with the full amount or he goes to the highest bidder in any league, maybe we can £3 million for him from West Ham....

er, I am the only one who thinks 5 million is very cheap for an international, world cup finalist defender? Distin cost about that much. Cant see the Jonny story as anything but bollocks. As for Yobo, get him back and put the pressure on the Turks to do business of sod off! He is also an international defender, got to be a taker for him elsewhere.
Jeremy Benson
237 Posted 27/07/2012 at 07:51:39
Jim, why is he worth more?

We paid £6 million for him 3 years ago. As far as I am aware, his stock has not risen in the last 3 years, and he is now 3 years older. Thus, £5 million is probably in the right ball park.

Some players might appreciate in value, but mainly younger ones who get better etc, or those who truly are bought for peanuts and turn into sought-after players. I don't think heitinga fits into those categories.

Would prefer we kept hold of him.

There are an inordinate number of opinons on here base on very little knowledge. Here is a list of things we don't know, but seems to be taken as fact by many
1. The terms of the original deal between Everton and Fenerbache. We know it was a loan deal. We do not know that Fenerbache were obliged to buy at the end of the loan (this in fact would have made it a sale with a delayed payment - not a loan at all). So comments that Fenerbache are somehow in breach of the original deal look groundless to me.
2. Fenerbache have negotiates us down to a price below market value. This is unlikely. Why would Everton sell Yobo cheaply to Fenerbache if they had offers coming from other clubs for more? There is no evidence that Everton are selling at below market value and it makes no sense to do so, so why assume that they are ?
3. The seriousness of the dispute between Yobo and Fenerbache.

This is all been blown out or proportion by the more hysterical members of Toffeeweb.

Jim Harrison
243 Posted 27/07/2012 at 09:00:06
Jeremy, you don't think he has got better? An erratic performer at first, now player of the season preferred to Jakielka, valued at 8 to 10 million prior to his injury. Distin cost 5 million at 31 years old. Thats my reasoning.
