Martinez mural
By Ross Edwards 05/08/2014
At the side of Goodison Park, there is a
mural of Martinez being created.
Obviously there are many who like this idea, but I have my reservations. Firstly, it makes Martinez appear to be "bigger" than the club and fans, and secondly, it's going to look a bit silly when he leaves or, God forbid, we struggle this season.
That's just my opinion...

This has been done to death on the GOT forum, and it's fair to say there's a range of opinions.
Personally I think it's premature, and could backfire spectacularly if we have a poor season. Fair enough he's had a big pay rise after his first year, but this just seems excessive. I'm surprised he agreed to it, given his normally humble demeanour. OFM would've loved it - he'll be fuming now.
I suppose it's better than the awful badge we had their last season though.

Just seems a bit to soon for me but if it helps keep him here for 5 more years or more than it'll prove to be worth it.
Agree Matt OFM must be fuming at the instant rock star status of Roberto.

All seems a bit Kopite to me, a bit Banana Republicish, cult of the personality, the sort of thing Bill would do if he a) thought of it first... and b) thought he could get away with it.
This must be from our PR geniuses... you know, the ones who thought the badge needed changing.

No doubt a brainwave of the Honourable Bill Kenwright who wishes to show the manager how his people adore him.
Absolutely ridiculous and OTT. And I would have said the same about great managers of yore such as Carey, Catterick and Kendall 1.

A bit OTT for me. What would make me laugh is a similar sized one of Bill or, even better, Bill and Roberto together.

Good job they never did that for Mike Walker when he was at Everton, I agree it is all a bit much and a little too soon. I would have preferred a montage of every Everton manager surrounding a smaller sized Roberto, but hey what do we know we are only supporters and not gifted marketing guys.

I am a RM fan but I find it cringeworthy!!

I do agree that it is a bit premature and unnecessary 1 year into his tenure. I know he has changed our mentalities and ambitions but far too early for a mural isn’t it?

It's appalling, cringe worthy even.
Surely better to have done some kind of tribute to past players/managers, not some guy who's just turned up. It's akin to labelling Lukaku a Goodison legend when he's done nothing to earn it.
Stinks of Bill's theatrics.

'Massive Martinez mural' makes it sound worse than it actually is. It doesn't look all that Idi Amin. There's certainly been more cringeworthy things plastered round the ground in recent memory.

John - it's (a) massive (b) a mural and (c) of Martinez - so how does "Massive Martinez mural" make it sound worse than it is?

Kev - I don't know what happened there mate but a mystical power altered one of the comments and it now reads:
This poem has nothing to do with Bills lack of money, but more his impact on everything around him. Goodison Park II is a mythical project while Bill is larger than life. And in that mans wake only rumors/whispers, and the lives he shattered remain.
Very strange!

Spooky, Patrick. Mind you, I don't have an effing clue what that comment and the one below are on about. Nowt to do with Shelley's poem, as far as I can tell.
I like to imagine a post-apocalyptic landscape in which nothing remains except that wall with RM on it. The people of 20014AD will have to try and recreate a vanished civilisation based upon that single fragment from the early 21st century. I doubt very much that they'll conclude it was the likeness of a well regarded football manager.

They always like to stick some new, half arsed cheapo decoration on the outer shell of Goodison to give the appearance of a new season facelift. A fairly muted image of Martinez is more palatable than the self-styled 'people's club' slogan plastered all over the place or the black and white images of blerts like James Beattie etc they had running round the entire ground not so long ago.
After the Pat Sharp ('don't worry kids, there's nothing to fear in the Funhouse...that's just my hair, not a fucking face hugger from Aliens hanging from my head') scrawled badge they had sitting in that spot last season then anything's an improvement.

It isn't a mural, it's a poster and could be removed in about 10 minutes flat if necessary.
People (rightly) bang on on this site about the club missing opportunities to get positive publicity and broaden our appeal, and now some are worried about a picture on the side of our stadium of our most charismatic and media-savvy manager for decades just after he has marked his first season with our largest ever Premiership points haul.
Some perspective please. It is just a large (easily removeable) picture with a very positive and club-centred message. In no way does it suggest he is bigger than the club, just that he represents what the club is all about.

Si (#090). ThatÂs how you see it and for all I know thatÂs what our so called media/PR/marketing mavens think and how they sold it at the presentation...
IÂm getting a mental picture of the AB-FAB offices with all the usual suspects Eddy, Patsy, Bubble, the other 2 dozy mares and the incomparable Kathy Burke in her growling Cockney, saying... Âforget all this Ginger twat, peoples club bollocks, gimme a new angle  and everybody throwing these terms about, Charismatic, Spanish, biggest points total, positive publicity, Club-centred etc etc...trouble is, theyÂd be taking the piss...on purpose... our lot are serious
All a bit, ÂThe EmperorÂs New Clothes with you as the one lone voice in reverse. I know that 18 or 19 against is not a statistically valid number as to over all opinion, but itÂs a lot compared to one or two for.

In this day in age where players trump managers (bar Mou) it’s refreshing to see us stand behind this guy and see where he takes us!
(Side note) just bc he’s a nice guy doesn’t mean he’s not a ham! He must LOVE the attention

Give me a mural of the Holy Trinity or Reid, Gray and Kendall or Joe Royle so Martinez can point it out to the current players and say 'those are legends go out and achieve what they did and you may be worthy to be up there with them

Rather badly done, the mural is missing a halo over Roberto's head. Another marketing cockup has just dropped in through the door with our season tickets. They have scored a massive own goal with a gross grammatical error on the free car sticker. On no account should the sticker be displayed anywhere, it will mark you down as an illiterate fool.

Derek (#104) - so a sitcom caricature of an ad agency represents my view how exactly?
I am just not getting why people are getting 'aeriated' over a big poster. I really don't see this 'bigger than the club' angle or understand comments like 'missing a halo'.
He is our current manager, he is currently doing well and so he is currently being used to deliver a club message.
I think the 'Emperor's new clothes' is a valid comparison with the majority on here seeing a permanent fawning tribute while I just see a temporary opportune association.

It's ridiculous. Pure and simple. It's like something you'd see in some tin pot 3rd world dictatorship!!! We take the piss out the RS for their canonisation of Benitez or "king" kenny then do this??? They must be laughing their cocks off just about now with this marketing brainwave!!!!
And if twitter is anything to go by thankfully most Blues are in agreement that it's naff, cheesey and somewhat embarrassing.
The saving grace is I suppose that it's not a mural but merely an oversized poster so I assume it could easily be replaced by something more appropriate.
Now.....what have Fulham done with that Michael Jackson statue they took down last year?? Maybe the marketing dept could arrange for him to go up next to Dixie???

Sean - Everton is a tinpot dictatorship with President Kenwright propped up by the Army Generals Green and Earl.
But even Bill wouldn't put a giant poster of himself up! Or would he.....? Drawing a round of applause during a match by having his grid up on the giant screens at Goodison is so 2011!
