A few days ago the BBC had an article about pre-season memories and one of their interviewees was ex-Toffee James Beattie. Aside from boasting about his pre-football success as Britain's second best swimmer, he also boasted about his team preparation skills.

He worked as a physio before becoming the manager at Accrington Stanley (remember those old milk commercials) and he says he's put his knowledge to good use. He proudly states that none of his players have ever picked up a soft tissue injury.

Now this seems unlikely given that soft tissue injuries technically include minor bruises and abrasions but it got me thinking about Roberto Martinez. Last year Barkley, Deulofeu, Distin and Coleman – to name a few – all missed games with what Martinez referred to as "soft tissue" injuries. Alcaraz missed most of the season with "muscle fatigue" too.

I'm wondering if Beattie is full of it or does RM lack in fitness training prowess what Beattie lacks in tactical astuteness?
