Memories of THAT Wimbledon game
By Jim Keoghan
10/11/2014
I'm researching a book on Everton in the 1990s and am looking for fans' memories of the last-day win over Wimbledon in 1994.
Please get in touch if you'd be interested in being interviewed to share your recollections for the book.

I was in the trees in Stanley Park for that one after being locked out of Bullens Road at 12:30. Great day though!

I have blanked it from my memory.
Just like the Coventry game!

I remember travelling up from London, meeting my Dad, seeing the Gone 2 One t-shirts outside, seeing a gloating LFC fan getting twatted in the Street End, my Dad telling me he couldn't take a day like that again, the sheer joy.........and later, the fury that our club had been allowed to deteriorate so much that we were celebrating staying up.

Paul, we were sponsored by NEC for the Wimbledon game, fail to see how you saw a "Gone-to-one" shirt.
That sponsor came years later, probably the 98 season.

It was something LFC fans were wearing, they were often on sale outside their place and I seem to remember some brave soul selling them amongst other stuff. Maybe my memory's playing tricks - still can't believe Horne's shot!

Paul, Peter is correct we didn't go with one-to-one until at least a couple of seasons later. NEC for the Wimbledon game, Danka for the 95 Cup Final and then One-to-One.
Maybe Jim should enquire why so many Liverpool supporters left Villa Park at half-time in a match in which they were leading (0-1) but two late goals by Dwight Yorke gave Villa the points, on Saturday May 7th 1994? Was it
a) to help us celebrate staying up?
b) To commiserate with their city rivals on their probable demise given the fact we were 2-0 down on 20 minutes? or
C) To attend the 'relegation' party that their supporters club had been planning all week.
Times had obviously changed on Merseyside as when our lovable neighbours had beaten Norwich City at Carrow Road in the early part of the 1961-62 campaign the Goodison crowd gave out a huge cheer following the 3-1 home win over WBA a sign of true sportsmanship or too many reds in the Goodison crowd?

Sorry folks, I stand corrected. Great day though. I remember the red getting a battering saying he wanted us to stay up – no-one believed the smiling twat!

When you think about it, it was only six years after being champions! 6 years ago was 2009 season... (that seems like the other day!!!)

It was 7 years after 1987 - 1994. And 2009 was 5 years ago!
Although mental arithmetic obviously isn't your strongpoint, I get your drift. We deteriorated very quickly, loads of reasons really, but a total lack of ambition from Board level was at the root of most of it. Dr David Marsh anybody? Kenwright was a Board member having joined in 1989......

I got locked out so went back the ale house. My mates where talking to much so I told them we need to concentrate as we were 2-0 down in no time. You could spot a red a mile off both when losing then when we won. The seasons after that where nearly as bad if not worse.

Like others got locked out, ended up in the trees in Stanley Park with a mate from work who I randomly bumped into as I was about to climb up a tree.

I remember the banner hanging over the St end that simply said " Everton will beat you "

The roar of the crowd before the game had me legging out the bogs thinking the game had started.....the banners in the Gladwys st, the many hanging in the trees, the joy of fans leaving the ground laughing about Barry hornes shot. An amazing day....will we ever find out if the game was thrown?

Silly comment to suggest the game was thrown. Throwing a game 3-2 and Barry Horne cracking one in like that is not something that can be arranged.
"Who needs Cantona when we've got Barry Horne"
Unfortunately I missed the game and spent the afternoon with my finger jammed up against a pipe my father had twatted a nail through.....

Goosebumps thinking about the game.
From utter desolation at 0-2 to total joy. The Wine Lodge in Charlotte Street was packed to the rafters with manic Blues dancing en masse to the Great Escape tune.
Never again

Things can only get better D ream, seemed to be playing in every pub I went in after the game. The rumor that the Wimbledon coach had been torched, Liverpool fans doing the conga at Villa after we went 2 down. We went in the Lower Bullens that day and yes the shite even went in there. They must have been convinced we were down. I think what galled me was not the fact we were in a relegation battle in 94, the warning signs had been there the previous season, Kendall resigning and the awful Gabriel caretaker period made it seem inevitable, it was the 97-98 season when only the season before we were title  dark horses what a fall that was!

I was at home rushing through the decorating to get to the pub. I thought we had really blown it when 0-2 down and my ale was as flat as the walls I had just been covering in the lounge...
I was a different fella by the time I rolled in a couple of hours later – only to be told by the missus that I had hung one of the lengths of paper upside down.
Still, I had two good results that day – the Blues stayed up and my better half has never let me go near wallpaper hanging ever since! Get in!
