Recently on Facebook we American Blues have been discussing Liverpool. Some newer supporters, as much as they love Everton, may not fully "get" our hatred of Liverpool FC. Indeed, in general the most widely-hated clubs tend to be Man Utd, Chelsea, and Arsenal. Some new Everton fans may not understand why we hate and root against Liverpool most of all. So, I wrote the following comments to explain the Everton-Liverpool rivalry to them:

I want to explain to my fellow American Evertonians why rooting against Liverpool is such a vital part of supporting our club.

It's not about personal animosity. On Merseyside there are Blues and Reds in the same families. After the Hillsborough disaster, Blues mourned the Liverpool fans who died and joined in demanding justice for them. It's a sporting rivalry.

But it's a fierce sporting rivalry, and we always root for Liverpool to lose. More so than Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, etc. We are happy Liverpool failed to win the league last season.

There's a history going back to the 90s. The 1890s. The landlords at Anfield tried to screw over our club, we left and built Goodison Park, but LFC stayed with the landlords. First they tried to steal the Everton name, the Football League stopped that; then they took the city name. In the 20s and 30s, Dixie Dean himself spoke out against the ugly and unsporting style of football Liverpool played.

Liverpool has a legion of glory-seeking bandwagon fans around the world from their winning teams of the 70s and 80s. Happily they have failed to find the glory they seek in the past 25 years, making such fans, as we say, really inept glory-seekers.

Liverpool fans don't even respect the Merseyside derby. They pretend that their big rivalry is with Man Utd, as if Everton isn't big enough to be their main rival. Evertonians resent their arrogance and condescending attitude.

We are a big club with a proud history and we intend to be back on top of the league soon. We hope Liverpool are at the bottom of the league. But we will always relish a win over Liverpool above any other, regardless of how high we are and how low they are in the table. COYB KAGS ETID
