More than a legend
By Dick Fearon 22/01/2015
By beating China with two goals scored by Tim Cahill, Australia is through to the semi final of the Asian Cup.
Tim's brilliant bicycle kick was followed by a trade mark powerful header. Tim is continuing to set records being the only player to score in three different World cups and three Asian cups. He is Australia's record scorer looks fit enough to further increase his tally.
Last year he was voted the MVP in the USA league.
I could weep in sheer frustration at why we let him go, especially now.
On another note, Li Tie, who some may remember from his time at Everton, had a good game for China.

LetÂs get Tim Cahill back to put a bit of spine into the side. Even as an impact sub, heÂd do for me. And I could put his poster back up on the wall.

I'm not sure what the next level up from legend would be. Myth? Though I'm sure he is real. I've seen him.
But let's be honest, for the last year with us he was about as good as Naismith on an off day.

Dick, he plays for my Red Bulls, and MLS is the level his age allows him to still be successful. Love him to death, but EPL-level legs he doesn't have anymore.

Does anyone think Tim would have allowed Mirallas to take the penalty against West Brom?
Or Joe Parky
Or Peter Reid
Or Andy Gray
Or Dave Watson
Or Kevin Ratcliffe
Etc etc

I said it then and I say it now, we let him go too early. He was knackered from almost non stop football, not past his best. He definitely had a few more years in him if he'd have got a decent rest which is what happened when he went to the MLS.
Best Everton player under Moyes and one of the best in the last 25 years.

Nick @ 1, Tim is beyond legendary status and next step dare I say it is with our other two immortals. He still oozes with love and respect for Everton.
Midst the adulation heaped on him after the China match, he replied to the interviewers suggestion that the bicycle kick wonder goal must have been his best ever, Tim replied thus"
"A similar and probably better one was the equaliser for Everton against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge."
Shows we are never far from his thoughts.

You mean Li Tie had a good game as coach!

Craig @ 9, At the end of the game players were swapping shirts Tim was seen chatting with Li Ti and the commentator mentioned they were probably reminiscing about their time together at Everton.
China's coach/manager(?) was a French bloke I think was Alain Perrin. My apology if names spelling are wrong.

Indeed he is more than a legend but he was finished at Premier League level, if he hadn't been he would still be playing for us. I was as gutted as anyone when he went but his time was over at this level. I still absolutely love the man to bits though.
Thank You for the Memories, Tim

Love him to bits, legs or not, he still has the heart and passion for the highest level. The ideal leader type character lacking in the current squad.

It's better to remember Tim as he was, than to try to hope that he can still deliver the goods for us. Many here are right to point out that he's unable to cut it anymore at the Premier League level.
His status in the club's history is probably akin to Big Dunc's in the 90s i.e. what he is in the 2000s is what Big Dunc is in the 90s. The one whom we are proud to have, the bright light in a less than illustrious period.

Apart from all the accolades above, Tim had fight, determination, skill and heart. His greatest attribute though is his overwhelming loyalty to club, country, football and family.

Dick
If IÂm not mistaken, Li Tie is the Assistant Manager. He also asked for CahillÂs shirt after the match which is, quite frankly, fucking embarrassing.
Bloody great performance from TC though. HeÂs adored equally by us and the Aussies. That said... I still reckon we let him go at the right time.

Dick. Li Tie was one of the coaches. I was at the game and could see him help warming the players up and doing some coaching from the sidelines.

I follow Tim on social media. Not a week goes by without him posting a pic with his sons in Everton kits. They even wore Everton kits to MLS games.
I love the guy. That's why Osman's comments about him being paraded annoyed me so much. I was there that day and the hairs stood up on the back of my neck as he walked (unexpectedly) out of the tunnel for one last farewell!
I hope he reads pages like this and realises how much he meant to us mere mortals.

Tim Cahill owes Everton nothing whatsoever and any of our greatest ever would welcome him amongst them.
TimÂs legs quit long before his commitment, guts or determination.
Sadly, the current side would be hard pressed to outplay him, Big Nev and Big Dunc on their own (11 Vs 3).
With the possible exceptions of Besic and Stones we donÂt have players with utter commitment in or first XI anymore.
Look at that side from the mid 80s...... they ALL had that level of sheer guts. Sheeds might have had the cleanest shorts in football history, but even he would crucify an opponent for pissing him off.
Loved BesicÂs recent references to the fact that he feels flattered/encouraged/surprised by our affection for him.....22yrs old and our new Midfield Tiger... about fuckin time!

The great John Giles summed Cahill up perfectly when he once said, "Cahill always makes a nuissance of himself and teams hate playing against him".

I loved Tim Cahill when he played for us but words like Âlegend are bandied round far to easily for me.
For me, he was a great player but doesnÂt go down as a legend because he won nothing as an Everton player.
Dixie Dean, Ted Sagar, Brian Labone, Alex Young, Alan Ball, Colin Harvey, Howard Kendall, Graeme Sharp, Big Nev, to name but a few deserve the moniker of legend to me as they played .
When the glory days of Everton are relived, I, for one, donÂt look back and say: "Tim Cahill, he scored three times at Anfield you know, itÂs just a shame we never won any of the games..." Or "We did get to the FA Cup Final when he was playing."
Brilliant player, whole-hearted performer, never shown anything but respect for our club, but not an Everton legend for me.

Must you have slayed a dragon or won a trophy to be a legend? There are plenty of players of clubs such as Matt le Tissier, Alan Shearer even Micky Quinn who are legends at their respective clubs, but have won nothing.
In my opinion Cahill is a legend because of the impact he had on us and his persona and the manner in which he still acts as an ambassador for Everton. I am dead certain of one thing, Tim Cahill has unfinished business at Everton - he will be back,

Nick (23) yes Tim is a legend to you, fair enough, each to his own. I loved him playing for Everton because he gave his all for 90 minutes every game and he was a nuisance to play against, plus a good percentage of goals.
A legend, sorry, not for me, a very good athlete but an average footballer. Then again if he's a legend to some, amen to that.

Nick Armitage - the clubs you describe aren't on the same level. So, I believe there is a higher threshold to become a legend at Everton than Southampton and Newcastle

Somewhere there would be stats that show how many times a goal from Tim pulled Moyes hence Evertons fat out of the fire.
My guess is quite a few.
Picture the upcoming derby when a ball is crossed into the RS area.
Now choose any of our so called current strikers or Tim C to be attacking it.
Not a hard choice eh'.

Nick, the question is, who would you choose, and it does not matter if the ball is in the air along the ground or in a melee.

Can we just sell the whole current Everton squad (including the management) and buy Australia's? They've been far more entertaining and far less worthless on and off the pitch. Instead of sunning themselves in Qatar the whole Everton team should be made to watch videos of Cahill until they understand what team spirit is.

Tim Cahill is a legend beyond any dispute. They'll be talking about his achievements for a century.
Whether he's an Everton legend is less clear... I'd suggest he's a favorite adopted son!
Still love the guy and maintain that if we had just given him a rest every now and then he could have contributed for another year or two. I also thought he carried an injury in his last season.
The plus side is that he left before it had time to turn too sour and broadcasts his love for the club regularly. I that sense the timing was probably perfect.
