Sunderland game, May 9
By Craig Fletcher 09/02/2015
My fiancée (very soon to be wife) and I are heading over to Europe in May for our honeymoon, and we're going to squeeze in the Sunderland home game on May 9.
We're from Christchurch in New Zealand, this will be my second Goodison visit and her first. Fortunately, through me she has been lucky enough to be introduced to Everton and how special it is to be a blue.
Obviously we want to be immersed into the full match-day going experience, so, fellow blues, any pre-match pub recommendations close to Goodison? Any other tips to make match-day as special as possible for those on the other side of the world? We arrive into Liverpool the day before the game.
Cheers!

Hi Craig. I am surprised nobody has replied to your post yet. Anyway, there are plenty of pubs in the vicinity of Goodison Park. The Thomas frost (wetherspoons) on county road is only about a five minute walk to the ground, and is probably the best pub on county road. There are plenty of pubs on county road itself, however, which are all very welcoming. You could also try the Winslow which is right opposite the ground.
A visit to the mega store near the ground is also recommended, as is a visit to St Lukes church on the corner of the ground. Here they serve refreshments and also I believe they have old Everton memorabilia on display. Another popular attraction is the Dixie Dean statue on the corner by the Park end stand. There is also the fan zone area behind the Park end stand, where sometimes there is live music and you can also get food and drink here. You can even get to see the players arriving as their car park is located just away from the fan zone, though I suspect you may be a bit too old to collect autographs.
I don't know if you will be okay for tickets or not, which will probably go on sale about 4-5 weeks before the match. You are best looking on the official website to check for ticket details, or maybe somebody else can provide some information as to how you can get tickets.
Anyway hope you have a great trip when you and your intended come over, with hopefully many more visits to follow. If you need any further help or information I'm sure we on TW will be able to help you.

Good reply Rob. Craig, proper Evertonians go to the Winslow. Hard core like. Put on your scarf, just. In case.

You can't beat pie, chips and mushy peas from the cafe on County Road on a match day! Love it!
Probably wouldn't eat it on a non-matchday!!!

Is that your drinking hole Colin? I've only been once since it 're-opened but we are going to start going there from the next game onwards.

Certainly is Rob, whenever I can get down there for a game. I remember, back in the day, that if you went in there and didn’t have a scouse accent you’d get some very unfriendly glares.

Hello Craig,
I would be more than willing to meet you, even the day before, and show you some Liverpool Scenes. It would also be nice to meet you for the game. I did this via TW a few years ago with Laverne and Debs from Canada and they are now good friends and have visited a second time.
I go to a pub called The Dark House, you can see the atmosphere if you go to Facebook – The Dark House Blues. Let me know.
Cosmic grooves all the way

Many thanks Rob, Colin, Stephen and George for your replies and suggestions.
Sounds like the Winslow might be the place to be for a couple of pints. Colin, my Kiwi accent is far-removed from a Scouse one but if we’re wearing blue I’m sure we’ll be ok :).
George, many thanks for your very kind offer. We’ll arrive late the day before the game so we might be a bit short on time, but will definitely bear it in mind.
Anyways, am really looking forward to it. Watching games on TV on the other side of the world is nothing compared to experiencing the real thing live.

Craig; don't know what your travel or ticket arrangements are but last season, even though I was staying with family I went, just for the secure ticket with Thos. Cook (a club sponsor) and got their hotel /ticket package... pick up at Bullens Rd ticket office with confirmation print out.
I had a mid-range hotel (Hotel Indigo, Chapel St) with to-die-for, all-you-can-eat Full English Breakfast... best hangover cure.
Got the train-bus thing to the ground from Moorfields... plenty of taxis before, but when 40k let out, they are a bit scarce.
I recommend the ground tour on Fridays before the match, book on line @ 㾶 per person.
Also, get there really early, do St Luke's, the Blue Dragon chippy, and as many pubs as you can handle.
