Pre-season friendly in Singapore
By Matt Traynor 25/02/2015
Seems to have gone under most people's radar, and I only noticed it as I'm still a member of Singapore Everton Supporters' Club on FB, but it seems Everton has agreed a pre-season friendly in June at the new-ish National Stadium.
No idea if this will be part of a regional tour, but I doubt it will be a 2nd XI. I recall in 09 or 10 the RS played there. Tickets were about £40, and the old National Stadium was packed - 55k, mainly cheering them on. I was there as a ticket was bought for me, wearing my Everton top (which the TV cameras focused on apparently), left at half time (0-0) to go to a pub over the road, as the RS won 5-0.
This is where I think we'll have a problem. Whether it's lack of marketing, or the Asians being glory hunters (generalisation maybe but I saw a lot of it in my near 9 years there), I doubt we'd draw half the capacity, unless the tickets are subsidised.

At least we have one sorted, we didn't even know our pre season till June last year and many predicted then trouble ahead as it was an absolute shambles and it just snowballed from there.

Hi Matt,
I'm from Singapore, and I certainly haven't heard that.
But you are right; it's a sorry state of affairs that something like this goes unpublicized.
Of course, on the other hand, it looks like a good opportunity for toffee fans like me to catch a game!
thanks for the heads up.
Looks like we should do what we can pass the word around...
Do you know if this info is on the official website, or where did you get this info from?
I can't seem to find this on the OS though.

Hi, I am from neighbouring Malaysia but am currently in Dubai. Luckily theyÂll be going Singapore during my off days. ThereÂs about 200 strong Malaysian Toffees who will be making their way there I am guessing from the buzz itÂs created in our chat groups and all. And I am pretty sure the Indonesian and Thai chapter would be in on it as well.
Dunno how big the new stadium is but I reckon if we win the Europa and get a decent finish to the season, thereÂs gonna be plenty of people watching :)
The Singapore Toffees fan club boss man is called Eugene and he posted in our Malaysian Toffees FB page on the visit of our beloved EFC 3-4 days back.

Terence #2, I got it through the Singapore Everton Supporters Club page on Facebook, where I'm still a member (although I left SG in mid 2011).
The group is quite active, and during my time there we were able to arrange an evening with Tim Cahill (2007) when the Aussies were in SG, and also Chang did an event for us for the FA Cup final in 09. Bad result but at least we got plenty of free beer and merchandise to drown our sorrows (and drown out the noise of Viv Anderson trying to compere).
If I recall, the last time we played in Asia would be the Barclays Asia Cup in 2005 in Bangkok, at the most inaccessible stadium I've ever had the misfortune (several times) to visit. Obviously there was the cancelled Indonesian trip from a couple of years back, where Felli had already been out to Jakarta for pre-game publicity, but hopefully this one goes through. If it's the Sports Hub Event operators behind it, I'm sure they will pull it off (not that I'm biased after my many freebies off them down the years heh).

Hope it's in a mini-tournament with the likes of Barcelona, Bayern and Juventus!
We may get our butts kicked but at least it will be against the best and we will get global coverage.

Matt, it's not quantity it's quality. Yes, the RS, Mancs, Chavs etc have an enormous following in Asia but most of them are glory hunting plastics who probably switch teams on a biannual basis. Each one of our 500-1000 Asian supporters are worth 10 of theirs, as can be seen from the above comments.

Actually, Colin, keep the Labone spirit alive: worth 20 at least.
I was there when Chelsea came to the fore, and the shirts suddenly appeared. Same thing a few years later with Man City.
I recall a local radio DJ (Man Utd) married a TV presenter (Arsenal) and so he just brazenly switched his support to Arsenal.
Didn't do him any good, she split with him a couple of years later.

Ah, so it's not going to be part of the Premier League trophy then? I am thinking of flying to Singapore from Hong Kong for this....
