If you added a touch of yellow and green to those blue shirts we’d call them Brazil” was one joyful Everton fan’s memorable salute to Howard Kendall’s record-breakers of 1984-85.
That fulsome praise followed Everton’s 5-0 conquest of Manchester United in October 1984, a display hailed by many Goodison supporters as the club’s finest single performance on the way to landing the League title, European Cup Winners Cup and finishing FA Cup runners up.
“United were title favourites when they met us but the bookies and the pundits had to change the odds after we’d finished with them that afternoon,” recalls Kevin Sheedy, who scored two of the goals.
“We didn’t just beat United. We attacked incessantly and demolished them and I think it was that result and performance that made us realise just what we could go on to achieve.”
Sheedy, the man with the bewitching left foot, will be re-united on stage with two other stars of that great team, goalkeeper supreme Neville Southall and inspirational captain Kevin Ratcliffe, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of that glorious 1984-85 campaign.
The trio join writer and broadcaster John Keith at New Brighton’s Floral Pavilion in “Anniversary Blues” on Friday, May 22 when they will tell the inside story of Everton’s greatest season backed by archive material from Everton FC, Everton Heritage Society and Radio City.
“It’s going to be a great night recalling the events of that season, “ says Ratcliffe . “ As well as that win over United and the incredible night we toppled Bayern Munich we also beat Liverpool three times. So there’s plenty to celebrate and we’ll also take questions from the audience.”
Tickets for the show, at £16, are available from the Floral Pavilion box office or by calling 0151 666 0000. Also on line at: floralpavilion.com
