Massive corruption charges against Fifa officials by the US authorities have led to arrests at dawn in Zurich, as the Americans bring their heavy artillery to bear on one of the most serious issues facing international football and its increasingly maligned flagship competition, the World Cup.

The Fifa presidential election will take place on Friday as planned despite the arrest of seven Fifa officials on charges they received more than $150m (£100m) in bribes. Among those arrested is Fifa vice-president Jeffrey Webb.

A separate criminal investigation into how the 2018 and 2022 World Cups were allocated has also begun. But Fifa has already ruled out a revote, insisting Russia and Qatar will remain the respective hosts.

Sepp Blatter appears to have escaped charges in this current round of swoops, and is set to face Prince Ali bin al-Hussein in Friday's election as he seeks a fifth term as Fifa President.

Uefa have called for the postponement of Friday's elections for Fifa president which Blatter in which is heavily favoured to retain his seat for a fifth term.

There is a change.org petition calling for Blatter's removal that is close to its 75,000-signature goal.
