Everton – Down's Syndrome Football Festival
By Darren Warkcup 15/06/2015
I thought a report into some actual Football played would be welcome reading in amongst the silly season of linked players.
I have been involved with the Down's Syndrome Association ever since my son, Christopher Everton was born in 2001 and am fortunate enough to currently be a Trustee of this wonderful Charity. This role allows me to support and help when possible with a wonderful program they run called DSActive. DSActive is a Football and Tennis programme for people with Down's Syndrome and is run by a hard working band of excellent coaches as well as a team within the charity. This program allows all people with Down's Syndrome to receive training, the opportunity to play in games and personal confidence with a National Festival held annually.
This Year's Festival was held on Sunday at a facility found for us by the WBA coaches who do a great job on the festival every year. I was delighted to see that this year for the first time Everton were going to enter a side. Their group included last year's unbeaten winners Cardiff City. Everton not only managed to win this game 2-1 but also topped their group.
This set up a semi final against Newcastle who had won the group I was coaching an Allstars team from and like most Newcastle teams had a large fan base that seemed to finally remember how to cheer a winning side, sorry cheap shot, wife's a Geordie. However a one sided game saw Everton win 4-0, could have been 5-0, we lost count on the side lines.
Now to the final itself against a big Charlton side that had won the Festival before and despite some great football for Everton so it turned out again.
But considering that Everton are one of the newer clubs to the program the coaches have certainly been doing a great job with some great players and football befitting of Nil Satis Nisi Optimum.
I was fortunate to be asked to present the medals to all the players and the cup's to the Winners. Everton had the Group Winner cup and the Overall Runners-Up.

I enjoyed reading that Darren. The on-the-pitch action certainly sounds like it was a lot more entertaining than the stuff weÂve had to sit through this season.
You have my sincere admiration for the work and effort you put in to such a worthy cause. IÂm sure seeing those who took part deriving pleasure, pride and a huge shot of self-esteem from the proceedings is itÂs own reward but, even so, well done mate.
YouÂre obviously a man blessed with a great charitable nature as it is though... what with your willingness to generously overlook a Geordie accent and get wed anyway (only joking, Mrs Warkcup!).

Nice story, Darren, letÂs hope the young men can go one better next season. The lads clearly enjoyed themselves and it is thanks to the generosity of spirit of people like your good self that the lads are able to express themselves out on the football pitch. I also saw a short news item about the Cerebral Palsy World Cup:
Linkwhich was very inspiring and enlightening. Good luck to the boys and keep up the good work, Darren.

A wonderful, genuinely inspiring read – well done Darren and everyone involved.
And the photo of the two lads going for the ball – superb!

Thanks a million for that, Darren. My son is special needs and we had a great day out last year with the special olympics here in Ireland. All of these events create a feel of inclusion and are great for both parents and the participants.

Great story and I only hope that having it on ToffeeWeb raises awareness of the event and the excellent work that goes on behind the scenes – even if only within our (relatively!) tiny corner of Evertonia.
Keep up the good work and thanks for posting this.

Read your article about Everton at the DS Festival. It's great that you could do something about them. My son Chris plays for them. He is on the photo in red and white trainers.

Thanks for this Darren and for all the great work you and others do to help. My mate Keiron has cerebral palsy and loves football. He is a Red and we have some great banter and slagging during the season.
Great article and pics, well done.

I echo all the above comments, some really good photoÂs too – like Eugene, I love the photo of the two lads going for the ball. All blood and thunder, wonder who won the tackle?
I hope EvertonÂs involvement goes from strength to strength and also that of the tournament. Let the winner host it at their ground, be a treat for all concerned.

Great story Darren, good luck to your teams in the future.
Just one question Darren, where does your boy Christopher and all his friends, boys and girls get their love from, IÂve never, ever met a person with Downs Syndrome who was unhappy, they just radiate happiness and make you feel happy with them. Best of luck to you, Christopher and all your family.

Great article, Darren. I was at the Tournament with my son Chris. He plays for the Everton team and is the lad with the red trainers on. The Everton team have only been together since October and had only played one friendly game before the Tournament so it was a fantastic achievement to reach the final.
Chris absolutely loves playing for his team and the excellent coaches who train these lads deserve every praise and recognition. Well done to everybody concerned. It was a superb day with a fantastic atmosphere celebrating what these people can achieve when given the chance.
