Everton duo feature in England U21s win

John Stones and Luke Garbutt both played the full 90 minutes as England Under-21s beat Germany in an exciting game at the Riverside Stadium.

Both players came on as substitutes against the Czech Republic a few days ago but got another chance to impress at the Riverside Stadium this evening.

England trailed 2-1 to two Philipp Hofmann goals after Jesse Lingard's 35th-minute goal had cancelled out the German's opener but Garbutt was involved in the home side's second equaliser with 11 minutes to go.

He played an infield pass to Pritchard that was nudged on to Nathan Redmond and the Norwich winger fired home a deflected shot with 11 minutes to go.

And Stones was part of the build-up as England took a 3-2 lead shortly afterwards, James Ward-Prowse eventually firing home at the end of a well-worked move.

It was the first time England U21s had beaten their German counterparts for nine years and it sets Gareth Southgate's team up well for the upcoming European Championships this summer.

Germany 1-0 up. Sloppy defending on our right hand side. Stones made pathetic attempt to block the cross. Sorry. He made no attempt.

England now getting forward with Ward Prowse and Garbutt slinging over good crosses.

Harold, Stones isn't the finished article by any means yet, but why pick on him for something that the other centre back Gibson is more culpable for? Young men need support no the use of words like "pathetic".

Yes Andy. I might have been a bit harsh. David James said we were naive so I'll go along with him.

2-2 – Redmond, after great work by the small but impressive Pritchard.

Yes Max, it was very impressive after twice going behind against a side packed with experienced Bundesliga players. No less than 6 starters and a couple of subs came from the Championship.

Well done Gareth Southgate and his scouting team. Pritchard, the little Paul Scholes lookalike from Brentford was a quick skillful revelation in the left midfield. Wish we had him.
