Fresh speculation links Everton with Celtic defender

Everton are again being talked about in relation to a bid for defender Virgil van Dijk.

The Blues are in a two-horse race to land the £10m-rated 23 year-old with Southampton according to a report by the Daily Mail, with Roberto Martinez on the look-out for a replacement for Sylvain Distin and Ronald Koeman still weighing up whether not to launch a bid to keep loanee Toby Alderweireld on a permanent basis.

Van Dijk has been linked with a move to Goodison in each of the last two years, most recently in the January transfer window.

Adding further smoke to the potential fire, there are further rumours on social media that any deal for the former Holland U21 star could involve a part-exchange deal taking Aiden McGeady back to Parkhead.

The winger, who left Celtic for the Russian League in a big-money £9m move, has struggled to hold down a regular first-team place at Everton due to injury and form but weighed in with a crucial assist for Romelu Lukaku's winning goal at West Ham this weekend.
