Everton announce squad for Asia Trophy

, 7 July, 36comments  |  Jump to most recent
Everton are taking close to a full first-team squad to Singapore next week for the 2015 Barclays Asia Trophy.

The notable absentees are three players recovering from the injuries that prematurely ended their 2014-15 season namely Leighton Baines, Darron Gibson and Bryan Oviedo.

New signings Tom Cleverley and Gerard Deulofeu are included in the 24-man party and Steven Pienaar is fit enough to play a part.

Jindrich Stanek is selected ahead of last season's back-up 'keeper Russell Griffiths while Tyias Browning, Brendan Galloway, Conor McAleny and Luke Garbutt all travel hoping to press their claims for more first-team action in the coming campaign.

Full squad: Howard, Robles, Stanek, Hibbert, Jagielka, Coleman, Stones, Browning, Garbutt, Galloway, McGeady, McCarthy, Besic, Barry, Barkley, Osman, Pienaar, Cleverley, Kone, Lukaku, Mirallas, Naismith, McAleny, Deulofeu

Great to see a near-full strength side; also great to see McCarthy, Coleman and Miralles travelling. Interesting to see McGeady in the party, considering the rumours of him wanting to leave.

Hopefully that will keep the gossip-mongerers at bay until at least the lads touchdown back in Heathrow!

Good opportunity for Garbutt and Galloway to get some gametime in the absence of Baines/Oviedo.

No Chris Long? And I guess Gibson and Oviedo will not be fully fit until the end of pre-season.

No Henen?

I would throw McAleny into the mix from the off and give him a chance playing just behind the striker... He’s 22 years old and if he’s not playing now then when will he? You have to question if he’s not starting to play now then when will he.... The lad has to have a chance to prove his worth and having seen him numerous times for youth teams, I think he would surprise people.

Is there anybody of note not on there other than the three lads listed?

I’d have thought Griffiths wouldn’t be too happy. Maybe he’s on the way out on loan? You heard it here first.

Squad still looks short at the back and in creativity and if Rom got injured, oh dear.

There’s one or two that could be traded in there but RM needs to add quality or we’ll be challenging Crystal Palace and Leicester again.

Good to see Barkley’s not injured yet.

Anyone know what type of squad we are taking to Swindon on Saturday?

U21’s, B-Team, Full First team..???

Makes it sound like we’re stopping off for a kick-about before heading for the airport.

How the hell does Lukaku get in the squad again. Can't believe that! .....and where is Oviedo, and Henen?

Tony, I guess that is a ’’tongue-in-cheek’’ question about Lukaku?

Seriously, who else is there? Do you expect RM to leave him out the squad given the money he cost and the wages he gets?

Think Oviedo is still recovering from injury whilst Henen is in the U21 squad next season rather than the grown-ups. However, any truth in the rumour that, at yesterday’s weigh in, Darron Gibson slipped off the scales and will now be out until next Easter?

Also, Mirallas refused to be in the group photo saying "I don’t do team stuff but here is a selfie which you can paste in."

No mention of Gareth Barry...

Leslie, Barry’s name is there.

Steven, as far as I know, the U21s are playing a friendly against Wrexham on Saturday as I am hoping to go along and watch.

Does anyone have any idea which part of the ground Evertonians are mostly planning on sitting? I’m buying tickets and have no idea where people are likely to be sitting... since we don’t know which game we’ll be in (I’m going to the 3rd/4th/Final day on Saturday) I guess nobody knows.....

Unless someone on here has any info?

Gibson and Oviedo injured? Well that's a first.

I’m hoping for a full team of first team players against Swindon... quite an unusual event to travel less than an hour to see Everton play!

From what my uncle tells me, Swindon will be struggling to put 11 players on the field. At least half the team from last season were on loan, and have gone back to their ’parent’ clubs.

I’m surprised Gibson isn’t involved. He’s recovered from his injury, only Baines and Oviedo are still injured.

I guess the club are trying to wrap him in cotton wool as the trip is more a PR exercise than pre-season training. If we fail to beat Stoke, we’ll only have played one game against decent standard oppo.

Real pre-season games start when they get back in about 12 days time.

Weird feeling that the first time I see Everton match live in the stadium will be in Singapore, not at Goodison Park.

Of course it was a joke, Tom #11 ..... And that's about the size of it — there is no-one else! Bleeding depressing, isn't it!

James Marshall - The event organiser and SESC would like to encourage all Evertonians to sit together at Section 105, 106, 107, 108, 109, 110, 111, 112

Dee and James, have fun at the game and let’s hope we make the final! Wish I had known earlier and I would have booked in the sections that Dee just mentioned. I am seated in Section 410 for the games on Saturday. COYB!

Is there a meet-up planned at all on the Saturday? It would be good to know what other people have planned for the 3rd/4th place/Final day on the Saturday.

I hope we win a friendly this pre-season, last year we didn’t win one (if my memory is correct); Roberto didn’t seem too bothered though. The squad looks short of players and unbalanced. Still Roberto knows what he’s doing, he’s one of the best in Europe!

I would love to see Mirallas, Barkley, and Deulofeu play behind Rom. However, maybe start with Naismith and Osman or Pienaar given their experience as there would be nerves involved initially. Once nerves start settling down, bring on Ross and Delboy together in the second half. Impact substitution.

Mirallas, Barkley and Deulofeu in the same side would leave us wide open defensively. Three players who do nothing without the ball. Lukaku as well would make four... We’d get murdered.

James, we didn’t do too badly 2 years ago when those 4 were in the same team.

I don’t remember them playing together that often to be honest.

I wouldn’t trust Barkley to shut his front door let alone try to stop an attack, and Mirallas couldn’t tackle if his life depended on it!

Honestly, I think we got lucky that season, I really do.

Mirallas can’t tackle? Ask Suarez!

That wasn’t a tackle, that was assault!

A fully deserved one too, I would say – I think most Evertonians gave a little cheer when Kev nailed him.

They played together at St James Park, James, when we battered Newcastle with some top class counter-attacking football.
