Under-21s humbled by Spurs

Everton's U21s got off to a disappointing start in their season opener at Tottenham as they went down 4-1.

Sam Byrne's 42nd-minute goal had briefly given David Unsworth's side hope when he halved a 2-0 deficit following a brace by Spurs' Pritchard, but Oduwa restored the home sides's two-goal advantage a minute later.

Coulthirst added another a few minutes from the end of the second half to complete the rout at the Spurs Training Centre.

Everton U21: Hewelt; Jones, Robinson, Walsh, Pennigton (C), Connolly, Williams, Davies (67' Donohue), Byrne, Evans (81' Charsley), Grant.
Subs not Used: Stanek, Ledson, Yates.

Not to worry, we are traditionally slow starters.

Doesn't really look to promising all this youth.

Do you watch them, Jim?

Unworth had said pre-match that the focus at this level is player development and getting them into first team squad. Very refreshing to hear and I think Everton do well in that respect for a top tier club. It's how the German and Dutch models work; at youth level no great emphasis placed on results, the priority is development. I think Dortmund lining up against City in a Champions League fixture a couple of seasons ago with 9 players bought up through the German if not their own.

I do Brent and I see at times a relatively honest group of lads but sadly nothing to really over-excite in terms of breaking through and taking the first team by storm.

I reckon it will be a long process.

Apparently antonee Robinson was the pick. Another left back!

Hi Jim, I enjoy the U21 games as well. We're seeing Browning and Galloway now getting runs in the first team, having seen Garbutt make some impression there already. I'm excited and expectant when I see the skills of Liam Walsh, Michael Donohue, Sam Byrne, Ryan Ledson, Kieran Dowell, Tom Davies, Antony Evans. Not all will make it, I guess, but if a few come through we can't complain. It's all developmental, as Danny says.

I was surprised Ryan Ledson didn't start this game, he was on the bench, has he been injured lately?
