U21s beat Celtic to win SuperCupNI

Everton Under-21s took on Celtic at Ballymema Showgrounds this evening in the final of the U21 bracket of the SuperCupNI.

David Unsworth's men earned the right to play the Scots after beating Espanyol in the semi-final.

Celtic beat Real Betis in the other game to set up a clash with the Blues' second string.

Harry Charsley, scorer of the winner in the first game, put Everton ahead after 36 minutes with a curling effort and that's the way it stayed to the final whistle. Captain Liam Walsh was suspended for this one after his red card in the first game.

Everton U21s: Hewelt; Jones, Robinson, Beningamie, Feeny; Foulds, Charsley, Evans (67' Kiersey); Henen (88' Holland), Sambou (70' C Duffus), Dyson.
Subs not Used: Gray, Broadhead, Yarney.

Not the greatest game, but hard fought. Defence was solid, but not enough creativity or sharpness near goal. Charsley's goal was excellent. Considering some of the best young players were at Barnsley, this was a good result.

Henen caught the eye with strong running and good all round game, but he's not an out and out striker. Duffus when he came on didn;t make much of an impression. New boy Sambou is lively but raw. Robinson was good at full back. Another young lad, Baningime, very solid in the holding midfield role.

Paul don't think Henen was there, mate.

Menen, on the other hand, had a great game according to the official team sheet?!?

Charsley curled a cracker! Well done lads.

Eric. I'm pretty sure that Menen is Henen!

Yes Paul I know!
I had to laugh every time the commentator said Menen..

Baningime is a young French player who is good on the ball and puts in plenty of tackles, played well for the youths last season until he was injured.

Does anyone know the team who played today?

Charsley seems to be getting mentioned a lot. Anyone know more of the lad?

I don't think Baningime is French, Dave. He's been on our books since he was nine and was born in the DR Congo (and is eligible to play for England). Incidentally one of the Celtic lads was sent off for a nasty tackle on Beni.

Strange this "French" thing about Baningime had been posted here before, as Paul says he's not. He really shone in the Dallas tournament we won earlier in the year and has made an excellent start this season. He's got lots of energy and composure on the ball, still a 2nd year Scholar too.

Paul and Phill I'll bow to your superior knowledge, I'm sure I read somewhere that he had French connections but I'll accept that that report was wrong.

Dave @12

DR Congo was originally Belgium Congo & the official language is FRENCH. Does this solve the mystery?

Henen aka Menen is Belgium. Made me laugh a lot too. Nice to see the match live on YouTube also.

Does anyone have a link to the starting line up of this game?

I would like to have a look at who played.

Gareth - I can't find a starting line-up even on the OS. BNut you can find a good run down of the side and game on GOT's youth team thread:

Link

As is pointed out there, this was mostly a second string U21s, so they did well. On the commentator calling Henen, Menen, apparently he was innocently repeating a mistake in the programme!

I presume never played because he was banned after getting sent off in the semi final.

Sorry, I left Liam Walsh out there.

I thought Matty Foulds had a really strong game. His timing of interceptions and ball control is very good and he's strong in the tackle. He looks and plays a little like Norman Hunter, all left foot but what a left foot.

Good run out for U-21s, and to be honest the scoreline flattered Celtic. They had a few chances, but Everton bossed the game. In my view, Antonee Robinson was our best; he is strong in tackle, very skillful and an absolute whippet.

Charlsey was good and his goal took a slight deflection, Henen was okay (his strike partner had an amazing work rate allowing him more room). More clinical play in box area and we would have had a few more, particularly after the sending off for the Celtic player in second half.

BTW Walsh wasn't playing as he was suspended after the semi-final.

Overall a good game. Nice to see ex-players Jeffers and Alan Harper mixing with the small crowd, and also Brian Flynn there (I think he is a scout for Everton).

Dave, I think Walsh was suspended in view of his red card in the first game, and you already have 11 there in the starting line-up, which I have copied into the lead story.

Seems that Duffus and Kiersey came on as subs... any idea who for?
