David Unsworth's team edged Sunderland 1-0 away at Eppleton Colliery to extend their lead at the top of Premier League 2 today.

Harry Charsley scored the only goal in the first half. Calum Dyson and Callum Connolly also went close. Everton dominated after the break, Kieran Dowell dragging a shot wide from a promising position. Mateusz Hewelt had to make a vital save, blocking Joel Asoro's shot.

Everton U23s:: Hewelt, Kenny, Robinson, Baningime (84' Duffus), Browning, Pennington (45' Feeney), Jones, Connolly, Dyson, Dowell, Charsley.
Subs not Used: Hunt, Henen, Evans.

Really pleased that Pennington is fit enough to play again. I think he may have got some game time as a centre-back if he'd been fit all this season; he's surely a safer bet than Funes Mori.

Where is Liam Walsh; hope his injury is not serious? Himself, Pennington, Browning and Kenny must be in with a shout at this stage.

Llam (#2),

I rang the Echo on Friday to ask about Liam Walsh's injury; they (one of the reporters) didn't know he had been injured. I assured them he had. I told him I'd ring back during the week to see if they could find out how serious the injury was/is.

Not that I'm one of the people advocating Koeman being sacked but, if he were to go for any reason, I'd feel fairly comfortable giving Unsworth the reins for the remainder of the season.

He's done great work with a talented crop of U23s. Has them playing good football and working as a team for the most part.

I would like to see a ball player amongst the coaching staff.Perhaps Osman could encourage someone to really control the ball and pass accurately. A player like that would absolutely walk into our first team.

Brilliant to see the young lads sitting pretty at the top of the U23 league.

Any truth in the rumour that Niasse was injured trying to open a locker?

"Perhaps Osman could encourage someone to really control the ball and pass accurately."

I thought he left the club, Trevor.

Trevor (#5)... I have no idea who's coaching the U23 midfield, whoever it is does a damned good job... then again they're a bunch of energetic, very talented lads who have pride in the shirt that they wear, I imagine they're a joy to work with.

I saw Walsh limp off in the Chelsea game, he was back for the Man City and Soton games then absent for the Leicester game. I don't understand why the club is quiet on this matter as they surely must be aware that there's a lot of fans very interested in Liam Walsh. C'mon Everton, pray tell.

Good to see Pennington back, him & Browning make a sizeable centre-back pairing.

Looking at the selection I'd be interested to know what formation they played as there appears to be 6 defenders, though Kenny, Robinson and Jones all bomb forward to great effect.

If you're impressed with Tom Davies, Harry Charsley will make your hair stand on end.. very dynamic, no nonsense, extremely talented, and scores regularly.

Liverpool – Juergen Klopp
Man City – Pep Guardiola
Man Utd – Jose Mourinho
Everton – David Unsworth.

What's wrong with this picture?

Dave

The Echo is just reporting that Walsh is expected to be out for another 2 weeks.

You must have jogged their memory!

He couldn't even ride a bike, if it had stabilisers!

That sounds like a pretty savage shakeup Unsy is planning. Last season's U18s were pretty special with Davies, Dowell, Connolly and Walsh coming out of them. Normally the likes if Brewster, Broadhead, Donohue, and Holland would have got a chance at U23s but we've got so much talent.

Brewster's on loan and I would think Broadhead would be in demand, he scored four goals for Wales U19s in November so should have caught someone's attention.
