World Cup — Day Four
Half-way through the first set of group stage games and there's been plenty of drama, a decent amount of goals, lots of penalties (some missed), and an increasing number of VAR judgment calls.
Sunday sees Group E kick off with Costa Rica playing Serbia before Brazil play Switzerland in the evening game.
But before the exhibition of Samba football tonight, Germany take on Mexico in Group F, in what might be the game of the day, with additional interest provided by possible Everton transfer targets, Marvin Plattenhardt and Hirving Lozano — both players in their respective starting line-ups.

Oviedo stays on the bench as Costa Rica lose 1-0 to a fantastic free-kick from Kolarov.

35 minutes and what I have seen of Lozano he is electric. So far at least, I was proven wrong for not being too enamoured with us being linked with him!
Not only an upgrade on Bolasie, but Lookman too.

Sent off 7 times in 180 games, Lozano — wonder what they were for as that is worse than big Dunc!

What a player Lozano looks. God knows why we haven't bought him before now. I think our chances are fading fast with that goal vs the world champions. Not noticed the German left back much. Mexico playing a blinder so far.
Worth a mention, the Serbian No 10, only 20 and looked very talented.

He was talked of as a target, price has just gone up.
Brands, you knob, get it sorted, you know him.

The best first half of football I've seen in a very long time. Outstanding. Germany look in trouble here. The counter attacking play of the Mexicans is nothing short of breathtaking. Vela incredible. Lozano is astonishing. We've got no chance of signing him now unfortunately.

Anyone want to see more of the Hertha Berlin fella we are interested in, he's opening their World Cup campaign at left-back. Hasn't done too badly either.
Mexico ahead through a stunning counter-attack down their left.
Lozano looks an exciting prospect, but has the annoying, Barkley-sequel ability to disappear down blind alleys.

No idea why there has been no activity so far. Waiting until the World Cup is pointless. Good performances are no guarantee of success but they are a guarantee of an inflated price. Lozano is now out of reach.

How we could use a Lozano. This one stellar game in the spotlight may have put him out of reach.
You snooze, you lose.

Chris, probably because the manager wants to meet the players that he has, especially the Under-23s, to see where he can fill a gap from within and where he has got to buy.
As he's in Portugal right now and the players are on holiday still, that's a bit difficult.

Congrats to Mexico. All those counter-attacks, surprised they didn't get 3-4 goals.
One other thing regarding the counter-attacking. Does Germany have ANY players with pace?

Hhhmmm... I'm not sure what formation Germany were trying to play, but their defence was very notable for its absence every time Mexico broke away, and they should have scored more than one.
I'm not sure what Plattenhards't role was, but he was way forward every time Mexico broke away, 50 yards away. Not sure whether that was him wandering or the way Germany were trying to play.
In conclusion, not sure I learned much about him from that.

Well, we have seen two players reportedly being watched by Everton, Carvalho and Plattenhardt.
Admittedly only one game for each but, based on what we have seen... surely best watching others! Neither are better than what we already have.

The kraut defender at left back defended abysmally against the Mexicans.
Great job. Lovely to see the arrogant jerries stuffed. Viva Mexico ðŸºðŸº

Agreed John — both looked bang average. The Mexican left-back and Lozano were very impressive.
