Another injury concern for Gueye

Idrissa Gueye's participation in Senegal's Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sudan and Everton's meeting with Crystal Palace after that is in doubt after he picked up an apparent ankle injury on international duty.

The midfielder, who sustained a knee problem just before the last international break and missed the home game against Huddersfield Town as a result, went off injured during his country's home clash with the Sundanese in Dakar following a heavy challenge.

He had scored earlier in the 3-0 win, popping up in the opposition box to slide home.

The two countries are due to play each other again in Khartoum on Tuesday.

Don't you just hate these meaningless International Breaks?? We always seem to get someone injured and they don't even have to be in the Irish squad!

The Cup of Nations is anything but meaningless to those participating -- but yeah, it sucks that we keep losing critical players on these breaks.

He may have been taken off as a precaution. It sounds like they were well in charge.

Can't shoot for shit, this lad, and he's not shy of having a go, so something he needs to work on, but boy do we miss his energy when he's not in the side.

He is already being missed. Let's hope he is fit early, and that Gomes is soon ready to step up, maybe McCarthy too.

We need him fit and firing. Schneiderlin starting fills me with dread these days. I still find it incredible how much his form has declined since those opening 20-odd games.

Don't know why he was let travel given that he was already injured. We need to be more strict in situations like this.

I don't really think we have a credible alternative to Gueye at the moment. Schneiderlin just doesn't provide the screen we need. Baningime is also back, but probably still too raw at this point.

Bring him home now to assess the injury and get some physio work in.

We need him and Tom firing on all cylinders for the Palace match, they've been doing well together the last 3 games.

You do get sick of so many international breaks because they result in too many injuries smack bang in the middle of a busy domestic season.

The pinnacle of International football for this calendar year was the festival that was the World Cup but already we've had two intervals for internationals and it's only mid October.

Oh shit. Schneiderlin back in the starting eleven. The thought of it makes me shudder. He spreads negativity, indecision and panic through the team like a plague.

Please, Gana, make a miracle recovery in time for Palace.

Funny how most top 6 sides' players withdraw with injuries such as toothache or a false eyelash getting damaged.

I cant understand why a month is not set aside in which all Internationals are played. Whether this is before the season starts or halfway through the season, maybe Xmas time. Then, barring serious injuries, this wouldn't impact on the clubs as much as it does now.

I haven't read about Gueye being flown home for treatment so maybe it's not as bad as first thought, but I still won't be happy if he plays again for Senegal this week.

I see Van Dijk was allowed to fly home after the Holland game as a precaution with his back injury. But he played against Man City with this injury and played for Holland against Germany so why would Holland release him from this week's game?. Couldn't be not upsetting a Sky 6 club, could it?

I have no problem with international games but, like everything else, the money men keep adding more. I don't know why we cannot just have continental championships once every four years. Ditch the UEFA League of Nations, Confederation Cup etc. Also, ditch these extensive pre-season and post-season tours. Get rid of the League Cup, reduce the Premier League to 18 teams and we have a manageable schedule.

With regard to Van Dijk, maybe Koeman actually has some integrity. At Everton, he was outspoken about Ireland fielding semi-fit Everton players. Perhaps Pep had a quiet word with Ron and he decided to stick to his principles and let the player have some recovery time.

The only replacement for Gueye is McCarthy.

Baningime could also do a very good job – but he is definitely more of a #6 mold – but a very good option.

Gomes next to Gueye fills me with excitement. But Baningime & McCarthy are more than capable replacements.

Unfortunately Schneiderlin & Gomes would never be a good option – a complete lack of pace & energy.
