Everton Under-21s needed to win their last Checkatrade Trophy match in Group F tonight at Barnsley to stay in the competition.

The game kicked off at Oakwell with Francis Jeffers naming only four subs for Everton.

Barnsley went ahead just before the break, Ryan Hedges finding the bottom right corner of Hilton's goal. Bassala Sambou rose confidently at the near post to head home from close range in the second half off a perfect Josh Bowler corner.

With no further scoring, the game went to penalties to decide the bonus point, Boris Mathis and Shayne Lavery, both late subs, seeing their spot-kicks saved, while Adeniran and Kiersey scored theirs, so Barnsley won the shoot-out 4-2.

Another penalty shoot-out down the tubes.

That monkey on our back, scratching its arse again.

Can't help noticing that (a) we only brought along 4 subs when I think the rules allow 7; and (b) the two subs were made very late in the game by Franny Jeffers, with the score tied was the upcoming spot-kick battle his motivation?

Well, the two lads who came on were the two lads who missed their spot-kicks. No, I'm definitely reading too much into this...
