Everton monitoring Atalanta defender for summer swoop

| Sunday, 06 January 2019 13comments  |  Jump to last
Marcel Brands and his staff are "tracking" Italy U21 centre half Gianluca Mancini, according to The Mirror.

They claim that Everton are keeping an eye on the 22-year-old's situation to see if he elects to sign an extension to his current contract which still has four years to run.

Mancini has begun to attract attention in his 14 appearances for Atalanta this season for whom he has scored four goals.

If he can score 24 goals a season get him signed up. Otherwise we need a striker that can do the same.

We don’t need another rookie defender from abroad with the usual “it takes six months to bed in” palaver.

I suppose it does no harm to get an upgrade on what we have, if he is, but it now looks like we've got more than enough cover for central defenders (5) and wingers (4) – not to mention overlapping full-backs.

Just as well Brands and Silva think giving younger players who come through the club a chance.

We don't need a defender and we don't need any 'punts' on any position either. We need a top-class striker or no-one at all. The money we've wasted the last few years on players is absolutely staggering. We've got players out on loan in the Championship that cost more than our record signing up until the last few years.

If we need to raise funds, then sell Tosun, Niasse, Walcott, etc.

Spot on, Grant, to better our team, we need to buy big or not at all, unless there's an older player who's top quality for cheap.

Italian defenders haven't really hit it off in the Premier League anyways. I can't see it changing now with this lad.

We've only got the FA Cup to play for; to win it, we need a goal scorer – either buy one or loan one and sell the dead wood. Save money for the summer.

It is good that we are looking at young talent but the only successful outcome for this New Year is for Everton to buy two quality, yet to peak, centre-forwards and Brands will be very unwise to think that time is on his side by buying easy (everything but a centre-forward) and not stepping up to the challenge. Show your quality and surprise us please, Mr Brands.

We may not be too confident in getting Zouma permanently next season so it's a good idea to be making plans.

Alan #3,

Which 5 central defenders will we have in the summer?
Browning, Pennington, Jagielka and Williams are all out of contract; I doubt Bainsey will get an extension either. Zouma is a loaner and Galloway can't seem to hold down a place in the U23s. We'll have Keane, Mina & Holgate. We need another one.

Me I'd look at Konza at Brentford rather than a young Italian.

Grant #4

Which players would you class as wingers? To me, the likes of Walcott, Richarlison & Lookman are forwards who want to be on the end of a move rather than create one.

For me, the only player we have who can slot in on the wing to create is Bernard.

It's interesting how we all interpret a players position differently.

Quite often a wide forward will receive the ball, have a look, and then just bring the play narrow back inside. I'd love to see some good old fashioned wing play and see one of our players take the fullback on and whip a cross in. The closest I think we have to that may be Lookman.

I see Bernard more of a playmaker, just off a centre-forward, buzzing about and slipping the ball through to our striker and wide forwards.

We should sign Harry Wilson

Iain 8.

I don't see any of those players as 'wingers' in the old fashioned sense of hugging the touch line, beating your man and whipping crosses in all day long. I've never actually witnessed Walcott beating anybody so I couldn't actually tell you about his crossing ability.

Richarlison is more of a wide forward. As a lot of 'wingers' started becoming for whatever reason way back when. Maybe they're all egotistical bastards that cant be bothered with the more mundane role of providing chances and want the glory for themselves?

Lookman is possibly the nearest player we have to a winger out of the one's you mention.

Bernard I see as a number 10 but he can play out wide in the Pienaar sense if he has the right player to link with as seen yesterday with Baines.

Iain (#8); Good question, by summer which 5 indeed.

Presently, we have 2 permanent, 1 in on loan, 1 out on loan and one whose contract expires who the manager says will not be going out on loan. Then there's the 4 youngsters you mention and some are saying that young Feeney looks good and while Lewis who we signed from Newcastle and a Markelo, a Dutch youngster, may be too young.

And as you say, perhaps I should have said "wide men", if that doesn't have a different connotation altogether.

Chelsea may well have said we can’t buy Zouma so get this guy in and give him a few 25 min cameos for rest of season and have him familiar with the pace of this league, if he earns more time quickly then happy days.
