Blues still interested in Meunier

| Monday, 06 May 2019 16comments  |  Jump to last
Everton are said to have PSG's Thomas Meunier on their shortlist as they seek to bolster their options at right back.

The Blues were reportedly keen on bringing the 27-year-old to Goodison as part of a potential deal for Idrissa Gueye in January but a deal wasn't reached between the two clubs.

Now Telefoot are claiming that Everton will revisit their interest this summer but will be greeted with a £25m price tag for the 27-year-old.

A bit dubious about this one, admittedly he is a decent player, although he is not a lot younger that Seamus, and if it is for back up, it is a lot of money to pay to have a bench warmer, plus it raises the question about what happens with JJK and Mason Holgate?

At 25M the question must be asked if we need a third right back or can he also play central defence.

Excellent right back who could do a job in the middle. He’s CL quality but will have lots of suitors and not be cheap. Brands specifically said he wanted players 25 or younger so he may not fit the profile.

As with Digne last year...

If he’s not being bought to replace Coleman then there’s no point.

Don't believe a word of this. I think I might take my customary break after we hammer Tottenham.

In my opinion the Summer will consist of : early transfers of young players. Brands trying to offload what he can and loan out the rest, with a emphasis on reducing wages. Then we will have protracted negotiations with the real targets. The number of targets being limited by UEAFA rules. Moshiri may release money in the last two weeks of the transfer window. Can't see any interest on any target over 23, emphasis being on adapting to the system. No Saviour Striker , not Brands or Silvas style.

In the meantime there will be loads of tripe : with agents hipe and journalists trying to fill in word spaces.

Brands wants younger players; he has stated that repeatedly and this guy doesn't fit into that mould.

File under nonsense for me.

I think Mason Holgate may be on his way during the close season, yet to be convinced by him, has a couple of decent games but then loses consistency and make too many mistakes and gets dropped.

I also expect to see Jonjoe Kenny out on loan, Crystal Palace are apparently taking an interest in case Wan-Bissaka moves on... interesting summer ahead indeed.

I am sure again Brands and Silva will be very busy this summer, both with incoming and outgoing players. I just make one appeal please no more loan deals, let's make sure whoever comes in will not be subject to a loan deal. The papers are already saying that Chelsea will recall Zouma for their pre-season, so that solid defence we have had for the last few months will be gone. Funny I haven't read anything about zonal marking on T/W for weeks now, I wonder if that will reappear next season if Zouma goes and Mina comes in.

Gomes another we are not sure will be here, when you have loan players being an integral part of the team, you aren't building a team for the future, but just for one season. Had we signed Zouma instead of loaned him we would have the solid defence to start next season, now that probably won't happen. Gomes is attracting interest from Spurs, so even if we get him it will be at a much higher price than if we had bought him rather than loaned him.

We keep going on about breaking into the top 6, well apart from Higuain at Chelsea I can't think of another loan player at a top 6 club. Because they all understand the danger that comes with loan players.

Brian #8, I agree Zouma should have been signed with an option to buy for an agreed fee [probably higher than we would have been comfortable with]. It is a nightmare now that our stable central defence and a great partnership is about to be torpedoed.

I suppose though that on balance that loan signing was a good one overall, considering Yerry Mina's luck with injuries.

Highly regarded as a good player, but unless hes a massive jump up from Seamus then I think our funds are better suited elsewhere.

We 100% need an attacking option, doesn't have to be a number 9 as we have DCL and Richalison who can play there, but we do need a 15+ goal man to play somewhere across the top.

Like Sterling, Salah and Mane, Richalison has proven to get goals, both he and Siggy have got double figures, but we need another. If we got an option for one of our attacking 4 slots who was guaranteed goals, we would have 3 certs for double figures, with the potential to have upto another 2 in DCL and Bernard.

With the above we could genuinely challenge for a top 4 place.

We need a squad with the potential to hit 70 goals to become a champions league team, marking both Siggy and Richalison for 15 each, add another 15 goals from a top signing puts us over 40. DCL, Lookman, Bernard, Digne, Coleman, could be good for another 25 leaving us shy by a number we can live with.

We then need someone to replace Gomes, I put this above the Zouma situation as we have Mina and Holgate a season better off, many of you may not think there good enough, but if you cast your minds back to Stoke city being relegated you will remember that Zouma wasnt that great 12/18 months ago either !

Back to Gomes, I really hope we sign him, but if we don't we need an adequate replacement, and top centre midfielders are not easy to come by, especially when the club looking for them aren't in Europe.

If we buy a top attacker I'd say we will be lucky to get change from £45m, if we buy Gomes I'd say he would cost £35m+, that's £80m, how much do our fans really believe we will have to spend this time around.

We need some clever deals, for me Walcot has not been a good signing, he is on top money and he doesn't do enough for it. If we sell him for £15m and get Walbeck on a free we have a like for like squad player who potentially could turn out to be a great signing, or at worse offer very little less than Theo and we get £15m. Free contract players get big wages, bit worse case give Walbeck a £3m sweetener and were still up £12m.

Wheeling and dealing is the key to this window, the squad is far to big especially now were not in Europe, and with the fact our youngsters have won 2 out of 3 leagues in the u23, they need to see a direct route to the first team.

Decent but would rather we went for Bissaka. Plus if Holgate comes back do we even need a right back? Surely Coleman, Kenny and Holgate is ample cover. More pressing positions to address first.

I was going to say something here but then I read Jerome Shields comment at No 5 and realised I had nothing to add.

We won't be signing Zouma In the summer it will be another season long loan. The club are not willing to pay the 30 million pounds with the knee problem meaning he would not yet pass a medical.

Gomes is happy here and even with Arsenal and Spurs sniffing around he looks like signing for us.
As said above Brands is looking at a younger team so anyone over the age of 25 will have to be a game changer for us to want to sign them.

I know this won’t be popular, but I don’t think JJK has yet shown enough to be able to consider him as a nailed on successor to Seamus. I’m hoping he will prove me wrong but it wouldn’t surprise me if the club were looking for someone significantly better right now.
