Moshiri at Finch Farm to hold Silva talks

Thursday, 5 December, 2019 175comments  |  Jump to most recent

Updated Everton's owner Farhad Moshiri traveled to Finch Farm today where an imminent decision is expected regarding the future of Marco Silva.

The Iranian-born billionaire was pictured leaving Runcon train station before traveling to the club's training complex amid fevered media speculation that Silva will be sacked today following yet another damaging defeat. He was joined by Sasha Ryazantsev, his representative on the Board, and Chairman Bill Kenwright.

Three days after throwing away a 1-0 lead at Leicester, the Toffees were beaten 5-2 in last night's Merseyside derby, their eighth defeat in their last 11 games.

It appeared last Friday as though Silva would be given more time following an interview by Director of Football, Marcel Brands, in which the Dutchman stressed that the club was going to stay united and that the manager would be retained.

The nature of the derby defeat, however, in which Everton conceded four first-half goals for only the second time in the Premier League era, combined with the supporters' reaction, might have forced Moshiri's hands.

Everton's players were also reportedly asked to stay behind after training to be addressed by the owner and at 7pm the first report emerged via the BBC claiming that Silva had been sacked and would not be in charge against Chelsea on Saturday.

Moshiri doesn't strike me as the type to lay into a group of men. More likely he will just explain what's happening. More likely words of encouragement than the bollocking any of us would give them.

The Torygraph have an interesting story here. Apparently Brands has gone in to bat for Silva and trying to convince Moshiri to give him more time.

That causes concern on two fronts, not just that Silva remains, but it also hints that he does not have anyone lined up to come in immediately.

So, if true, I wonder what the split would be on Silva or Moyes for the next game.

If Moshiri was going to sack him today he wouldn't get off at Runcorn, he'd call Silva to him while the position was explained to the players at Finch Farm. He'll just be told how long he has to turn it round and that his Christmas present is in his own hands.

Can’t believe Moshiri is fully ready to ditch his man just yet, and sounds like Brands wants more time for Silva. Kenwright will be ready to What’s App his mate Moyes to take over.
But will Brands want to stay as well if Silva ditched and Moyes gets job. Will Moyes be willing to work with DOF denying him his wish to run the lot as I’m sure he wants to.
I don’t think it’s just an easy sack Silva job, there is far more at stake, maybe even Moshiri’s willingness to keep pumping in millions.

If Brands thinks that Silva deserves time then sack the both of them.

I remember being excited when Moyes walked in the door, called us the People's Club and got Unsworth scoring in the first few minutes against Fulham. Football has changed and Moyes hasn't.

Please don't bring him back.

I'm deeply concerned for our future. We're heading to be the next Leeds United or Nottingham Forest.

I just hope that as he has asked the players to stay behind, he has the balls, after binning Silva, to tell the players how much they've contributed to his sacking.

Not that it will probably bother them. They'll be more interested in getting home safely in their Ferrari's and Bentley's to check their bank balances.

As Toyah said, “It’s a Mystery”.
Can they not decide? Can they not get their man? Do they seriously think Silva is remotely confident? Are they asking him to resign to save £? Is the delay because the asked Silva a question, and he is still going through one of his long, meaningless waffles about “moments” and they can’t stop him?

Not Moyes please. It will divide us even more & is a backwards step even given the position we are in.

Noticed the current voting on the Grand Old Team poll for / against Moyes returning:

1348 Yes
5812 No

That is a landslide & echo's the sentiment on here after Norwich when the rumours surfaced then.

Why make a hugely unpopular decision & potentially bad footballing one given his recent record? If the club's media team are monitoring the web & social media to gather data & advise, you'd think they'd listen . oh wait, it's Everton. Moyes it is then.

Replacing Silva with another manager will make little or no difference.
What Moshiri must do to move the club forward is remove Bill Kenwright & all the ineffective hangers on (i.e. Ferguson, Unsworth, Jeffers, Ebbrell etc), and let his man i.e. Brands do the job he was brought in to do.
All BK ever does is go back to failures & non-achievers - in spite of some bad signings, particularly before Brands came on board, why are there so few truly home-grown young players coming through from the youth set-up? Going back didn't even work with Howard Kendall, who was successful first time round partly at least because the club gave him time.
The sale of Lukaku in order to get Rooney back was obviously a ridiculous move at the time, clearly initiated and driven by BK for his own sentimental reasons, and caused the waste of a season, demonstrated a lack of ambition and entrenched us in a low-scoring, painfully slow playing style.
This non-sensical speculation about bringing back Moyes, who made us a laughing stock by his treatment of the club in his last 6 months, needs killing rapidly.

Why on earth do we need a manager for the remainder of the season ?

Either the bloke they have in mind can do the sodding job or he can't. So having some boring turd "minding the coats" makes bugger all sense.

And as DoF then surely Brands must already have some names to discuss positively with The Mosh, I mean that is his job isn't it ?

Last bloody thing we need is bloody Widow Twanky interfering unless The Mosh & Brands preface Bills input with "Whatever the gushing one says is an automatic NO!"

If we thought a shit start to the season, getting tonked at Anfiled and dropping into the bottom three was embarassing, now we have to stand by with our kecks down as the three stooges appoint fuckin Arthur Arsekey !

I have just run the comments on this thread through my company's Sentiment Analysis application. The three factors which come across strongly are anticipation (reasonable), trust (an ambiguous measure which also indicates that trust is an issue, not that people trust what they are hearing.

But the big one is fear. This is rarely a major component of news stories, texts or speeches, but it is very high on TW at the moment. The profile for Michael's report and the BTL comments has exactly the same profile as does Lyndon's.

At least we are consistent. We are fearful.

Knowing the invertebrate species that are indigenous to the Everton boardroom, Moshiri has probably kept the players behind after training to ask them if he should sack their manager and if they know anyone who might be interested.

Hopefully Silva will be given the bullet, and Brands and the players left in no uncertain terms that they must improve their performance or they'll be out.

The performance of the whole club at the moment is woeful. We've absolutely spunked £500 million on crap players. The money for Bramley-Moore Dock will probably go on players now and we'll still be at Goodison Park in 20 years time. I hope Moshiri and his henchmen give them both barrels.

I can't believe i'm saying this but if it comes to a choice between keeping Silva or having Moyes back, i'd sooner keep Silva.

Of course it shouldn't be a simple as that and we should have someone else/better in mind, but I wonder what other people's views would be if it came down to this -

Give Silva more time, or have Moyes on the sidelines at Goodison this weekend??

Whoever takes over has/will inherited, one of, if not the worse squad in the current Premiership. Forget the transfer window we've got to live with likes of Pickford, Holgate, Keane, Mina, Davies, Sigurdsson, Schneiderlin as the backbone of our team. You can pair whoever with whoever you want in the defence/midfield but there isn't a combination in that lot who will stop the rot. We will be conceding goals like there's no tomorrow, well into Feb/Mar at the earliest.
Top teams will come to Goodison and smash us to bits, the other 14 teams will come to Goodison, park the bus and hit us on the break, knowing that they'll be given golden opportunities on a plate. We'll actually pass to them, give them the ball on the halfway line and then all they have to do is run at the defence, who will part like Moses and the Red Sea and say "there you are have a goal"

Whose fault, Silva, coaches, Brands, lack of decent academy players, doesn't matter, we are where we are with a 3rd rate squad and even if Klopp came in he couldn't save us !

Phil (45),

Can a big boss not tell his staff that what they are producing is not good enough?

Can a big boss not tell his staff that they will be replaced if they don’t improve?

The players might well be able to throw Silva under the bus. If I was Moshiri, I would make it clear that they will not throw him under a bus. He can afford to let them rot in the reserves if required. They either buck up, or rot in the reserves.

Wish it was as easy as putting players up for sale. We can't shift most of this bunch as no other club will pay them as much. It's going to be a case of winding the contracts down over the next few years. Can't even put them out on loan.

I have to admit to having no clue whatsoever about who should come in or whether anything would significantly change no matter who it was.

I remember saying to Tony A and his dad at one of the get-togethers (after the 4-0 win against Man Utd I think) that I felt Silva was the man and I thought he'd take us onwards and upwards and be here for some significant time. How wrong could I be?

Thing is I find myself numb and not knowing what or who to want. It's a feeling of total and utter despair that has been with me for weeks and has been getting worse the worse we've done.

I sometimes wish I could walk away because this is fucking affecting my life in a really bad way.

I would wager that most of the "No, no, no, Moyes, waah waah, he left us to join Utd. Knife to a gunfight, waah top 6 booo, finishes 4th after selling Rooney, waah" people, well, I'm really guessing you're the same bunch that said Martinez only finished 5th his first season because he had Moyes's defence? Hmm, thought so.

First off Silva needs to go. I've never seen a manager so out of his depth.. I'm not even sure he will be gone at this point. Any new manager won't even have a training session before our next game. If Silva is here still, l will back Chelsea. If he isn't, then l'm backing the blues.

Also a watchful eye on Richarlison. Who I'd pair with Kean. Have lwobi behind them. Davies and Bernard together in midfield. Schneiderlin sitting deep and under instruction to find runners ahead, if they are moving. And a back 4.

We have to play 3 in midfield, not at the back. Control the game. And fuck me, this supporting the blues is hard graft. I think Moshiri came to drop of Christmas cards.

Christopher Timmins
66 Posted 05/12/2019 at 18:07:20
The next few hours will tell who is calling the shots as regards the manager. If Moyes is back it can only be seen as a slap in the face for Brands who obviously has not had enough time to find a suitable candidate. Of course there is the possibility that he has had the time and none are interested in the role in which case he has to be batting for Silva.

So given the choice between Silva and Moyes who do you want?

Nothing to do with all of that for me David. I believe Notes was right at the time and done a fantastic job at the time. But he didn't progress himself or us & he is now outdated. He couldn't progress us in his last 3-4 years. He took the champions of England to 7th (or was it even 8th? - can't be bothered looking it up). Was very quickly relieved of his duties at Espanyol & got Sunderland relegated.

That's nothing against Moyes the person, just Moyes the manager.

He done a job for us at the time but I think he couldn't do that again now.

It's now gone 6 pm on what should be Silva's last day... and still nothing. Just astounding incompetence from this club. But I know they like to issue their wonderfully crafted "Offical Club Statements" at odd hours when they think no-one is paying too much attention. As if — in this 24/7 internet-driven era of saturation news links...

It's "Operation Goodison Exercise" all over. If anything epitomizes the utter brain-dead mindlessness of screaming that out at every game... does any other Premier League club find it necessary to do that during each and every home match?

Moyes would be so disappointing. But it will be a relief to see the back of Silva.

It's not really been mentioned but I think, as much as losing Gueye and Zouma has hurt us, losing Silva's experienced assistant manager has been a problem. That same Number 2 is doing very well with a little team back in Portugal now. Was he the driving force?

James Marshall

They certainly can, Danny, to their heart's content. Whether the players take any notice is another matter. Once again I reiterate, what are the consequences for the player?

They don't confirm to the rules we have to adhere to. Martinez, Koeman and soon to be, Silva, reinforces my theory. They haven't performed, what are rhe consequences for them?

I'm sure the £60k a week, the players get paid, lessens the blow of sitting in the reserves

Riley Masters
93 Posted 05/12/2019 at 18:34:30
I can only think they're so desperate to save a bit of wedge that they're keeping Silva on until the threats and dogs abuse force a resignation.

This has now stretched out so long as to be beyond absurd. Everton 2019 folks, we can't hire people and then we can't fire them either.

A total total joke.

To be honest, I think he's staying. If the players were supposedly told to wait behind and were spoken to. You know at least one of them would have leaked something out if he was getting fired. There's been nothing for hours so I see him staying until at least after the weekend.

I anticipate that Moyes will be appointed the interim manager.
Richarlison "get out of contract clause to be met" in the next window.
Sign some misfits/or not wanted by United or Top Six club in exchange for Richarlison and undisclosed fee.
Sign a player called "Everton" but not the one widely linked with top teams.

I hope a decision is made. Things can't go on like this.

The wedding between Diego Simeone and Atletico appears to be over, but as someone earlier noted, he'll be off to Arsenal with our luck.

Yes, Kieran @ 73, Louis van Gaal was the coach at AZ, but it was Marcel Brands who assembled the team.
PSV were on the ropes when he took over there.
He turned things around, with the academy finally bringing players through.
You'll not find anyone in our country echoing your words, it'll be the opposite.

As for the mess at our club, we can only wait and hope.

Robert @ 89, yes a good point which was aired on here, some time ago, and endorsed by Steve Ferns, it does make you wonder, as Steve Ferns mentioned that Joao Pedro Sousa had been with Silva at every appointment, he has been lucky enough to acquire.

I put this in another thread, but maybe just maybe the delay was because they had a lengthy, transparent conversation with Marco where they let him know it wasn't working out, that they were in the late stages of bringing on his replacement, and in good faith they expected him to assume the "caretaker" role himself until things were sorted with the replacement. During which they assured Silva he'd get his £4m buyout clause money, and all parties walk away amicably.

This would also indicate that they're not in favor of making an interim panic move like Moyes would represent. And allow them to mirror the Spurs by firing Silva / announcing the hire of his replacement in the same week or even same press conference.

It's still speculation on my part but I believe it makes the most sense. Yes it'd be class if they told us that as fans, but if we're honest, that's an unreasonable expectation.

Mark G, that's a big reach lad.

You're the American fan are you not? Have you been to Goodison when the air is thick and toxic?

Silva looked like he was about to vomit at the tin mine last night. Silva sitting in the dugout against Frank Lampard's young team is to me, unfathomable. It would be completely pointless and counter productive, and really really piss off the natives.

Daniel A Johnson
118 Posted 05/12/2019 at 18:54:32
The players have been asked to stay behind for two reasons.

1. To be informed SIlva is staying and get a rocket off Moshiri for their shocking play.

or

2. To meet the new manager, which if this is the case it must have to be Moyes as no one else could possible be around anyway at this short notice.

This is like the end of the transfer window as we wait for the big signing before midnight. It never happens though. It would appear the board can't even agree among themselves what to do. No one is innocent in this mess except the fans. The board is in danger of alienating the real lifeblood of this club ( the fans) with this dithering around. As I said earlier, I'd sack the whole lot of them.

I might be putting 2 + 2 together and coming up with 6 but what about Phillip Cocu? He worked well with Brands at PSV, and just look who's joined him at Derby, our old Granny-Graber mate himself. Not saying I want him, he's not exactly bossing the Championship, but as conspiracy theories go, it's not complete toss.

I usually let others come on here and rant about the recurring theme of club incompetence, but I find it truly baffling that a) no lessons appear to have been learned from the Koeman/Allardyce transition (i.e. debacle) and b) Brands doesn't appear to be handling the situation, with Moshiri's input. Like, why does Kenwright even have a say in the matter? This is literally why you have a Director of Football, it's absurd!

What if Brands has spoken to every good name you want. Pochettino, Ancelotti, Mancini, the lot. They all said no. Maybe Marcelino said maybe, but not yet, not until Arsenal make an appointment. Maybe Gallardo is interested but not yet either, again he has irons in the fire. Maybe Rafa said yes, but with his buyout clause, wages and transfer pot, it's far beyond the club's budget and Moshiri won't self fund it. Maybe it's all down to Moyes or Silva, and Moyes won't agree a short term deal, and instead Brands wants to get to Christmas.

Who knows? All I know is we cannot get this wrong, and letting Moyes get even one foot in the door, particularly on the rumoured top 10 and I get the job full time contract, is wrong, very wrong.

Lets all be honest, what proven manager would want to come to Everton right now.
I never thought I would be worrying about relegation , but looking at our fixtures we are in real trouble and so we need a manager who knows how to keep us up and sorry all you big Dunc fans, he is not the guy.
This team is full of prima donna's and if they were all honest would hold their hands and take responsibility for showing sweet fa, they eventually led to Silva getting the sack.
Silva has been unlucky with the injuries and Brands has delivered to him nothing special.

Their performances have been just fucking awful, the only player trying last night was Richarlison, like they can not even pass the fucking ball to each other a lot of the time.

Moshiri apparently has told the players " the club needs you to step up " while the awaiting on the next managerial appointment.
Fucking Moshiri should have stepped up after Norwich home defeat if not before.

For me, I was always wary of Silva's appointment, his record in the premier league was awful.
Moshiri's reign to date has been a total fucking shambles and it has set us back in my opinion.
I also agree with those who say that Silva was hung out to dry by the club this week.

The next appointment will be Moyes I believe !
