Saints stuffed again. Since they beat Liverpool, they have conceded 17 goals, scoring 3. It makes United's 9-0 a little more palatable considering the roles were reversed with Newcastle playing the last 20 mins with 9 men.

Goals have been hard to come by for us. It's a while since we scored 3 or more in a game. Maybe today's the day. King to come on late and stun 'em with a brace.🤞 I've backed us to win 1-3.

Having watched MotD, the ridiculous and incompetent refereeing continues, Soucek's sending off definitely came into that category, and it is an example of what seems to be happening every week. I have to raise another question here, apart from the obvious.

Why aren't the alleged victims of non-existent fouls, punished for simulation? Even if it was retrospective, it would certainly go some way to eradicating this hideous show of histrionics, in order to get an opponent undeservedly sent off.

The only time I have ever seen simulation punished, and again it was very dubious and a lot less severe looking than many that have happened since, was our own Oumar Niasse!

What the fuck is West Brom's kit all about? Rotten!!
Danny O’Neill
5 Posted 07/02/2021 at 13:08:40
Funny, we were randomly discussing kits somewhere else Eugene and I mentioned how West Brom had previously changed their traditional green and yellow away strip to green and red because the manager thought red to be more intimidating and associated with success (choke, gag).

But I get what you mean, their adaptation and variation of the stripes both home and away makes them really look like bar codes. Forget Newcastle.

Mmmm. Might have to order some Deliveroo popcorn.

Quality "journalism" or punditry from Souness, Keane and Richards on Sky. Let's all shout each other down.

Could be entertaining though!

I said elsewhere Brian, I do most of my reading on sites like this and have pretty much given up on the national media. I'm going to try out Greg O'Keefe's "The Athletic", which comes recommended.

A sign of progress is that we could actually do with a Wolves win against Leicester. Even with that, they are nowhere near us whilst that would also keep Leicester very much in touch.

I think so Jay (BRZ). 10 points clear of Liverpool with a game in hand (although clearly we have a say in that). Bit too much for anyone to overcome in 15 games. That would take a meltdown on City's part and Liverpool to kick in to what they were last season. Can't see that either way.

I can't see United realistically challenging them.

Without getting carried away, I still see Europa as our realistic target, but am heading off to my Paddy Power App to put a pound on Champion's League.

Bill (55), I don't know if it was a penalty or not, as soon as City scored their first goal I switched off, started reading, if the game had stayed 0-0 or 1-0 to Liverpool I would have carried on watching, I truly believe there is a devil, and those bastards are in league with him, so I always expect them to come back and win the game, all who carried on watching are braver than me, I switched on for the result on this thread, so happy at that result, might watch MOTD, maybe not, knowing the bastards got beat, humiliated by the sound of it, is more than enough for me. As for the penalty, if Salah was involved, enough said, what was I saying about the Devil!!.,

Totally agree on the poor refereeing Colin. I'd add ridiculous rules like the current offside one.

VAR, I think can be a success if we get the above right.

It works in Rugby. How about Refs are miked and have to explain their decisions for transparency? That would promote competency as they would have to know what they were talking about.

Video technology in the modern game get's rid of the poor decisions through human error. Nothing is ever going to be 100% but when it is there for everyone to see, there is less to argue about. As ever, all we want is consistency.

Never mind cold feet, Michael Owen and Steve McManamann talking about Liverpool not finishing in the top 4 because of the way teams around them are playing, mentioned all the teams down to about 7th place except Everton who are 3 points behind with 2 games in hand.

Another excuse by Jim Beglin when Fabhino brought down Foden from behind was he didn't mean it as he has been injured and is not up to speed. Apologies if I spelt players' names wrong...

I used to spend a lot of time in Annapolis with work and was there for the 2013 Super Bowl when the Ravens beat the 49ers Graham.

I don't profess to understand the game too well or have any particular allegiance but that was a great night given the Ravens are fairly local to Annapolis. Almost all the bar staff in the drinking establishment I was in seemed to be Washington fans too, which added banter and spice to the occasion.

Given we've got a thread full of Beglin-isms I'll add one from yesterday when Maguire went down under a challenge from DCL (when he created the Richarlison chance).

Maguire has waited for contact gone down easily, but then we've seen Calvert-Lewin go down like that and get the decision

How many years ago was that penalty at Anfield? Gives you an indication of how long he'll be talking about the VVD-Pickford challenge.

Beglin has personal against us. Not just his Kopite leaning, but for the tackle by Gary Stevens that snapped his legged and arguably ended his career in reality. He never really came back from that.

I have no recollection why, but for some reason that night I was in the Main Stand rather than the Gwladys Street and that happened right in front of me. Littlewoods / League Cup fixture if I recall. I don't even remember the score without looking.

No malicious intent from Stevens, but it wasn't pretty.

I found the MotD analysis of the Liverpool game strange indeed. No look at Salah's dive or the goalkeeping errors. A couple of mentions of VVD and the clear insinuation that, unknown to us, Anfield is, apparently, the only stadium at which home fans are not allowed to attend.
Barry Robson
188 Posted 07/02/2021 at 23:51:25
Yes, MotD pundits blaming lack of fans at Anfield for their poor home form. If their fans were there, it would be different, apparently.

No correlation at all to the fact they won the Premier League by a mile last season playing in fucking empty stadiums. Any excuse will do, it seems.

Danny (193), I watched that penalty on Sky highlights, I wasn't surprised it was given, they always are, but no one in the media hardly ever question them, usually just, Salah won a penalty, nobody brings it up, calls him out on it, the constant diving with the unmerciful scream that goes with it, pathetic, but they still keep on getting them. That one last night was the same as most of the others that he was “ clever there” or “ entitled to go down there” never “ The cheating bastard dived there” although most of the media know he did.
Shane Corcoran
195 Posted 08/02/2021 at 11:29:44

Danny O’Neill
196 Posted 08/02/2021 at 11:56:24
Yeah, saw the minimal contact Dave, so the player went for the penalty. The fall however was nowhere near proportionate to the contact and very theatrical. There was a good still doing the rounds on SM last night. He would have got a full house on Strictly for those movements.
Steve Carse
197 Posted 08/02/2021 at 13:17:01

Steve, the panel that found one person guilty in all the time that it was active?
Brian Harrison
199 Posted 08/02/2021 at 14:22:06
I think VAR has just highlighted what a piss poor bunch of referees are now in charge of matches, and those mistakes they make are often backed up by another poor referee based in Stokely Park agreeing with the awful decision.

Then just to prove how absolutely hopeless they are, another panel a few days later overturn the decision that the ref on the field made and endorsed by his idiot mate watching VAR made. The idea of VAR was to correct clear and obvious not to scrutinise to the minutest detail of offside or on a challenge that the referee saw. Decisions like Lamphards disallowed goal against Germany a yard over the line absolutely a clear and obvious mistake.

Bill Gall
200 Posted 08/02/2021 at 14:23:29

Have to agree that the playacting is still rife and despicable but the fact that so many inept referees are so oblivious to it is beyond me to it.

Surely to God they get tuned in to this when they take their referees training courses.

What is with all this clutching of faces when the ''coming together'' is no where near the face. Cheating is a word that comes to mind with so called professionals trying to con the referee into showing the red card to fellow professionals.

I wasn't too impressed: thought Tampa were a load of thugs and one particular incident when 4 or 5 piled on Mahones was clearly premeditated and dangerous. I cannot believe St Tom Brady, who picked key Tampa players and has a great input into team strategy, did not approve. No wonder there are so many serious head injuries in American Football. And the so called penalties for such thuggery, loss of a few yards, were pathetic. I have enjoyed some Super Bowls, but not this one: Tampa are the (old) Wimbledon of American Football

What a night it was in Tampa, having a dummy run for Everton's next homecoming party.

Coronavirus, what Coronavirus?? Good to see so many people enjoying themselves but regrettably there will be consequences. Very few people with masks and very intimate celebrations.

Getting a last minute equalizer against Man U, watching City make Klopp look like a spitting image dummy and Tampa winning the superbowl. This year is getting better by the week.

Will # 206. I've said this many times, Salah's actions always remind me of those spaghetti western films, when a cowboy is shot in the back, or hit by an arrow. The cowboy stops, bends his knees, arches his back and flings his arms in the air before falling forwards and is dead. Salah is exactly the same. One cheating bastard yet gets away with it time after time.
Dave Abrahams

Shane ( 195), yes Yerry was pathetic, and looked it, made a fool of himself trying to get a man sent off, Richarlison staying down for next to nothing, constantly, also pathetic, cheating, most referees ignore him and carry on with the game, Salah does these dives in the penalty area and gets the penalty, even when it's apparent he is playing for them, apparent to everyone except referees and pundits in the studio, lots of them associated with Liverpool FC, it's just wrong Shane.
Kevin Prytherch
211 Posted 08/02/2021 at 17:48:36
Although it will never happen, I'd like to see cards dished out for attempting to deceive an official (unsportsmanlike behaviour) for things like Salah's blatant dive or Mina's comical collapse. Even if it is a penalty, the pathetic dives should be punished as well until they are stamped out, as well as the fouls being given. It might have been a penalty for Salah, but his legs going for a tug on the arm should get a booking.

2 or 3 bookings for a dive should equal a 3 match suspension.

Larry *214,

First off, I apologize, using the Liverpool supporter was the wrong thing to say...

The point I was trying to say was, it sounded like a Chief's supporter blaming their loss for the rough tactics that Tampa Bay were using, even though a number of sports writers after the game said that Kansas City lost the game with undisciplined penalties. This is the type of complaints Liverpool supporters use when they loose to the same type of infractions they use.

So once again I apologize as I didn't mean to make you out as a Liverpool supporter.

Talking about the Wimbledon era, I guess you mean Vinny Jones. Himself and other hard players of that day they like to reflect on how good they were, but know that they would not last 15 minutes in today's games.
