Man City v Leeds a good game, Leeds full of energy and desire competing very well, they're a committed team. Just scored a well taken goal before HT. In trouble now though , two mins later and a Red card for a really late high tackle . It will be Alamo time in he 2nd half.
Danny O’Neill

It's been entertaining Tony. Very open.

Has Pep been disrespectful to Leeds with the selection?

Leeds captain in trouble here.

Bench is outrageous. De-Bruyne, Gundogan, Mahrez, Foden.
Tony Everan
4 Posted 10/04/2021 at 13:26:49
I think the B team is on because they can afford to do it, an opportunity to give the others a break. I think Pep may make a sub not long after HT to go more attacking. De Brunye and Foden for Zinchenko and Ferran maybe.

8 Posted 10/04/2021 at 14:13:33
He's pretty much played the second half on the edge of the Leeds penalty area Thomas.

I thought he was good first half too. Was loving his running out from the back, carrying the ball forward. Before he re-established himself this season, I said to my son I'd make a cheeky bid to get him back.

Thomas Richards
9 Posted 10/04/2021 at 14:19:29
He has been very good at centre half this season after a bit of a blip Danny, I have always thought this would be his best position.
Got more to his game than Rice imo

Seems to me that Sterling and Jesus don't like each other. They never pass to each other. Pep showed no respect today (Aguero not even on the bench) and paid the price.
Barry Rathbone
13 Posted 10/04/2021 at 14:36:10
Might not have the best players in the division but Leeds sure have the biggest hearts.

Stones not up to it for the second goal and how Raheem Sterling is considered a footballer is beyond me - Stumbling Sterling should be his name

Tony Everan
14 Posted 10/04/2021 at 14:36:22
Yes Tony, It seems Leeds put that effort in every game without exception. Fantastic stuff from the players there. If we could somehow match that running, effort and desire with the players at our disposal we would be a different proposition. We operate at a lower level with regards that type of application.
Tony Hill
15 Posted 10/04/2021 at 14:37:51
I'd be looking to Leeds' performance and courage rather than City's effort. They won the League long ago.

I wonder if there will be people on the Leeds equivalent of TW saying that they were lucky to win and should have settled for the draw? After all, they haven't really got the players and it's a building process, isn't it?

Funny to see people trying to compare City fans reaction to Peps style to our fans reaction to Carlo.

Very revealing too. They clearly havent realised that one has his team playing the best football in the country...And the other has his team playing the worst.

If City fans mention Everton on their TW equivalent. They would almost certainly be saying "Thank fuck we didnt get Carlo"

Danny O’Neill
23 Posted 10/04/2021 at 15:08:07
I see it is no longer possible today, but inevitable anyway, that Norwich are coming back up.

I don't know much about him, but their right back is touted by many as a Coleman replacement and we have been linked (speculative / rumour caveats).

If true, I wonder if this impacts that potential move.

Danny O’Neill
25 Posted 10/04/2021 at 15:13:47
Been quietly thinking that Bill but cautiously not saying it. I did to my son this afternoon and he didn't fall off his chair.

I know even in his prime you never got a full season out of him let alone now, but when he does play you have quality.

I guess the wages for the return of investment would just be too much. Maybe another Rooney type signing, so maybe not. But like you, I thought it.

Bill Gall
26 Posted 10/04/2021 at 15:19:02
Hi Danny my thoughts are it would liven up our main strikers as they have not really got any competition. and early rumors we we going for him may liven them up a bit more
Danny O’Neill
27 Posted 10/04/2021 at 15:22:41
Personally, if available I would Bill, mostly for what you say.

Well so far, all I have to say about Liverpool v Villa is that it is so one sided in terms of possession, I haven't been able to ascertain if their keeper is still sporting that Panco Villa look.

Colin Glassar

Potter at Brighton has been mentioned on here as a possible candidate.

Notice (and not just this season) how the rs players are constantly talking to the officials? They challenge every decision made and it must have an effect. Our lot must be the quietest, most timid bunch in the league.

And when a player of that calibre becomes available Bill, age shouldn't be the determining factor. Ibrohamovic is a good example. And remember when Alex Ferguson "invested" in Teddy Sheringham who was, I believe, then in his early 30s too? Blend "here and now" with potential throughout the team, but up the standard of quality.

Danny, Sheringham at Man Utd did a great job because he was an intelligent, technical player surrounded by more dynamic players. We're crying out for more dynamic players to give talented one-paced players like Sigurdsson, Gomes and even Rodriguez some passing options and cover.

Danny O’Neill
37 Posted 10/04/2021 at 15:43:32
Great point actually Robert. One thing Sheringham was never blessed with was physical pace. Intelligence and a brain that allowed him to make speedy decisions.

Yes, we need players to give James and Sigurdsson options. The Tottenham game (ironically given the Sheringham link) is a good example of what someone like Sigurdsson can do with options in front of him.

Danny, correct Sheringham was a very - very good player, often underated due to the volume of class strikers in the PL in that era. But apart from his vision/footballing brain he scored over 150 PL goals.

For perspective, as Greame Sharp is talked about a lot on this site, that's a lot more goals than Greame scored for Everton. Maybe that just shows how we have been starved of goals over the years though.

Brian Williams

Barry, there's still time. Class is timeless!

Rob, that's it!! He was groaning without hiding it!

Joe, Sheringham optimised the use of a footballing brain to compensate for lack of pace. It's always a balance and every team needs a bit of both. On the pace side, you don't want a Tony Daly. Remember him? Could have ran the 100m for Team GB but a shocking footballer who "graced" the top flight of English football.

Kieran, that's my gut instinct as well, especially given the wages he would command. But it definitely made me think.

Tony Abrahams
85 Posted 10/04/2021 at 17:08:00
That's why it never bothered me when he left Danny. It's not easy, that's why offensive players cost more money, but a calmer player doesn't get caught in two minds when in such a great position, and this is an all to common feature in Barkley's game imo.
Tony Hill
86 Posted 10/04/2021 at 17:11:24
I'm quite happy about the result. It knocks Villa out. We are, incredibly, still bang in it.

We go ahead of Liverpool, of course, if we win our games in hand, we will be 1 behind Chelsea on the same basis (come on Palace, it could be even better for us) and if we beat West Ham, we go ahead of them.

Leicester and West Ham play each other tomorrow. Again, if we win our games in hand and that game is a draw, we'd be 4 off 3rd place.

The points aren't the problem. The problem is that we don't think we can do it: manager, team, fans - none. It's a disgrace.

Colin Glassar
87 Posted 10/04/2021 at 17:12:45

Tony Abrahams
88 Posted 10/04/2021 at 17:13:23
He's got a one on one with the defender, after taking a great first touch, looks to go inside, checks back outside, and then seemed to get caught in two minds possibly because another Villa player runs outside of him, and ends up losing the ball Thomas. A player with more awareness, would have made more of such an opportunity imo, and this play encapsulated Barkley in a nutshell for me.

Tony Hill
109 Posted 10/04/2021 at 19:04:44
I agree, Bill, but games in hand do count since they present the opportunity for points if we can be bothered to win them.

It's the attitude which matters, of course, and we've decided we need another few transfer windows - and then some more, no doubt.

Danny O’Neill
110 Posted 10/04/2021 at 19:11:44
We are Joe. But it took them decades to build and get themselves to where there are now. Just as it did City. Test and adjust, trial and error.

The sad thing is, this season, we are not a million miles away from Chelsea in terms of points. If, as Tony Hill says, we believe.

I don't thing the results so far are that bad. Tomorrow's will be more interesting as we could probably do with a few draws. But ultimately, the only results that matter are ours. Win Monday, beat Villa (game in hand) and then we see where we are.

Danny, I always felt we should have moved for Zaha when Palace did, but no we got the Koeman/Walsh gems instead. One thing is for sure though, our goal difference is pitiful. A lot more goals are needed next season. It just shows how important Lukaku was for us.
Danny O’Neill
114 Posted 10/04/2021 at 19:38:02
The importance of having a 20+ goal a season striker Joe.

Lukaku used to get slated for aspects of his game. He consistently scored 20 + goals a season.

Linekar was not a great footballer. In his one season at Everton he scored 30 league goals and 40 in total.

Zaha is an interesting one. Big fish at Palace, flopped on the big stage, went back to being big fish in the Palace pond.

That said, I agree, I'd have loved us to sign him when we were linked about 18 months ago (I think). I think Everton could have been a good fit for him.

Look on the bright side

After today we are mathematically safe. Even is Fulham, WBA and Sheffield won all their games, we would still be above them.

It is also looking like 31 points would be safe this season. Lots of poor teams.

What a goal that almost was from Messi. It was almost Iwobiesque in imagination and execution. Do you think Roy would take him for Zaha?
Robert Tressell
117 Posted 10/04/2021 at 21:07:00
Colin, I will raise a glass to you when we do offload Iwobi. I don't think it will be this summer though. I don't think we'll be signing Zaha either. The only chance would be if he kicks up a huge fuss and forces down the asking price to, say, £40m. At that price there might be other takers - Spurs or Arsenal in particular. So chances seem slim.

I disagree on Barkley. I don't see the value of having someone in the squad unless he can be trusted to play reliably for an extended period when injuries arise. The only caveat to that is if you have a Hail Mary freakish super sub who's not good enough to play regularly but has a superpower that can throw a cat among the pidgeons. Eg a 7ft 7inch bean pole striker who no one can beat in the air, or the worlds fastest sprinter, someone just fucking crazy with an attribute that could make a difference. Having a guy who occasionally does a good pass or occasionally has a shot isn't the kind of super sub I'd want

Nah Danny, thinks it's done and dusted now with Newcastle probably going to be safe and Fulham down, if we beat Brighton tomorrow though they could be dragged into it but still think Fulham's chances went when they lost late last week and even later this week.
Danny O’Neill
125 Posted 11/04/2021 at 13:54:30
Yeah, they lost their chance a few weeks ago definitely, but ultimately the season and the league table in May will tell the truth.

Just watched Burnley's number 5 clear one off the line. Heroic defending, great positioning but ironically (Burnley), just like watching Michael Keane. Get's turned and done for pace but positions well for the block.

Also turned inside out (two or three times) for Newcastle's second.

And I believe has been involved with England and is linked with a £40m move away.

Credit to Burnley for generating that sort of income from average defenders.

West Ham now lead by 3-0 and will be just a point behind Leicester if the result stays. Considering they were in the relegation battle for most of last year what a turnaround. Lingard was linked to us, and looking at Iwobi or Bernard or King he just might have done for us what he is doing for West Ham. Leicester doing what they did last season looking nailed on for a Champions league spot only for it all to unravel in the last 10 games.

Moyes has done a brilliant job, and none of us should be surprised his forte is taking average players and improving them. Also you know his team will not throw the towel in. He went to Man Utd at the wrong time, and probably feels as if he wasn't given the time to turn things around.

Don't ruin him Colin. Rather than the box poacher we experienced, Jelavic became a corner flag chaser the following season and lost his confidence. United wouldn't agree to a buy on option with West Ham for Lingard, so unless they want him back, available in the summer. 28 mind.

No specific thread Thomas, but he's a player who has been linked numerous times over the last couple of years and it has always been met with derision.

'another Utd reject' etc.

I admit I would never have proposed his signing, he did appear a 'highly rated cause he's a manc but never actually done anything of note'.

And no-one would have predicted such a run of form as he is having now. And also, it is likely that this run of form will probably (although not definitely) be a temporary boom, and I would not like to.see us splash the 40 million + Utd will now demand thanks to his West Ham exploits.

However, the general dirision us fans have whenever linked with a 'Utd reject' is something I never quite understand. Most of our utd rejects have been decent performers - Howard, Neville, Saha. Cleverly was underwhelming but we made a profit. Only Schneiderlin was useless.

You can't blame the late collapse by der 'ammers on the manager. It was the players on the pitch and their errors that made it squeaky bum time at the end.

Very telling stat just put up on the BBC site. Since Moyes' return to WHU his team has scored 3+ goals 15 times. Only United with 16 and City with 19 have bettered that stat.

The play acting from players is getting ridiculous, VAR was supposed to help the game but players realize that any contact no matter how minimal they have to fall down roll over clutch any part of their body and hope for a foul,, there are tackles going on today that I be telling my grand kids to get up and stop playing for a foul. Soon we will be playing non contact football.

VAR can and should work. It does in Rugby.

VAR is not the issue. The standard of officials making the decisions whether they do that split moment or after watching it several times on a video replay remains the issue.

Son is a sly player. He threw his arm out first at the United player. He kicked out at Andre Gomes causing him to collide and break his leg. He proceeded to cry; literally cry and gather sympathy for his shithouse actions. Sly player.

John Keating
175 Posted 11/04/2021 at 18:06:57
Danny I think VAR is an issue.
Why did VAR get involved in the Son "foul" ?
The ref saw it and let play go on and Utd score. I understand they check the goal itself for any issues but why the non foul?
It really is ruining the game, the spontaneity.
I think any player who gets "injured" so bad that he rolls around on the pitch for 10 minutes, and the latest one, banging his hand on the pitch, then holds his head when it was a tackle on his leg, should be looked after.
To ensure he has suffered no permanent damage he should be kept on the sidelines for at least 10 minutes to recover - NO substitute for that time.
That might make the Son and Salah's of this world think twice

I do not believe that the two card ( yellow and red ) system is fit for purpose anymore.

I would like a third card introduced to send off a player for unsporting behaviour, no following suspension. I would offer as an example, the player who takes one (yellow) for the team by taking out an opponent on a dangerous break thus allowing the defence to re-set and face the free kick.
An example was seen this weekend in Manchester City v Leeds, when Leeds broke through only for their player to be cynically fouled. A yellow card was issued because the offender was not the last man. Ridiculous,! This act is much worse than time wasting or taking off a shirt when celebating a goal ( in an empty stadium)!!
Given that earlier two players had committed to attacking a bouncing ball and the player who arrived slightly late was hurt by the opponent (who had played the ball ) who was sent off for dangerous play. As I saw it, the city player would have been just as guilty if he had been wuick enough to arrive first. I digress.
So I invite thoughts on a third card, send off? Sin bin?

You obviously know that Moyes hasn't been in charge of West Ham since 2017 & when Moyes actually took over from Pellegini in 2019 West Ham were in the bottom four. So to be fair he's outperformed Ancelotti so far but it's very early days.
Don Alexander
210 Posted 11/04/2021 at 23:58:26
Just watched MoTD and saw Arsenal beat Sheff U. Sheff U are way less talented to mid-table Arsenal and it showed. Arsenal therefore repeatedly attacked with half their team in the Sheff U area when they scored, their players having the pace and desire to do it.

Contrast us. Ancelotti has inherited the slowest midfield, by far, in the Premier League, and it shows in terms of effectiveness all over the pitch. We can't rely on anyone in midfield to help out a momentarily exposed defence, we can't rely on them to assist our two isolated forwards, but we have to rely on them to be perfect when they're in the gung-ho battle taking place in midfield.

It's really depressing that some nurk sanctioned so many pace-deficient midfield signings after Moshiri bought in, especially when our very own Tom Davies (and an obvious gem, to some, given that he's Alan Whittle's nephew, a bloke who, surrounded by a team of actual champions, scored a few goals to help clinch the trophy before going on to a hopelessly unsuccessful "career" in places such as Iran) needed to be surrounded with pace to balance his own serious deficiency when it comes to getting a spurt on.

Is their any chance that this summer we can for once sign a midfielder or two with pace AND skill, of a type to worry our opponents?

One difference is I think Kevin Nolan, replaced Stuart Pearce, on the back room staff, but credit to Moyes, and let's just hope Ancellotti, can get us closer to West Ham tonight.
