56,000 crowd in Hungary. Lucas Digne playing but seems further forward. Can't quite work out the formation.

Great cross from him there for Mbappe. Close.

They must have a fabulous vaccination program in Budapest! The crowd is massive.
Great cross from Digne there.

A fine header to set up Benzema's pass to Mbappe. Digne represents us so well when we need it.

What a miss.

Mbappe's touch, take down and reverse lay off. Quality.

Jeff @120 - they have a very good vaccination programme, not all that far behind us, and way ahead of most of Europe.

Having said that Hungary has the highest number of Covid deaths in Europe (per million people).

My wife is second generation bo-hunk. We're going nuts here.

Love seeing a packed stadium and people going nuts again. Wonderful.

Jamie

I love Hungary it's unique. The rest of us Europeans are Germanic, Latin or Slavic. Slap bang in the middle these lot have a very unusual language, different culture entirely. The rest of us are generic by comparison

Magyars getting comfortable in possession finding paths to the final third. The froggies look out of ideas...
Kieran Kinsella
12 Posted 19/06/2021 at 15:26:11
Dale,

It's refreshing to see pretty ordinary players actually calling for the ball, looking forward and being brave. France playing a lot like England and Dembele and Varane are making endless errors.

Kieran -

I've never been, but agree. My wife and I want to go to Budapest before God rings the bell. I looks gorgeous. My wife's Dad promises me it's phenomenal and Europe's hidden gem.

I do love the unique Hungarian culture. Hungary and frankly Romania, walled off by their sheer mountains, are both fascinating places in Europe and the globe.

Si Cooper
17 Posted 19/06/2021 at 15:34:53
So who are the Magyars?

According to online dictionary, 'bohunk' is a derogatory term for someone from Bohemia (Czechia).

Had to add in edit: To me Magyars are the group mostly identified as Hungarian. I started writing before I saw Dale's post, and it was in response to Jamie's post.

Jamie Crowley
18 Posted 19/06/2021 at 15:40:31
Soren -

Wherever you went.

Bohunk is a deragatory term for Hungarians, to my knowledge.

I can only quote the late, great Ed Flaherty - one of my dear friend's Dad who passed away years ago [RIP Ed] while at my wedding reception with my bride.

"Crowley! With all these Bohunks and Micks here, there needs to be a brawl! Why is no one fighting?"

Bohunk is used in my house affectionately - poking fun at idiots who look to demean, my wife and sons use Bohunk as a prideful word, announcing their heritage.

Cheers.

Dale Self
19 Posted 19/06/2021 at 15:44:28
And Si, Magyars is an old school term for Hungarians. Not a slur as far as I know
Kieran Kinsella
20 Posted 19/06/2021 at 15:46:56
Definitely not a slur Dale, it's the Hungarian word for Hungarians.

Bo Hunk is probably one of those geographically ill applied slurs like when the English called Germans Huns.

Si Cooper
21 Posted 19/06/2021 at 15:49:29
Must be a contraction of Bohemian and Hungarian I guess. Not sure why that would be derogatory.
Kieran Kinsella
22 Posted 19/06/2021 at 15:51:18
Si

I guess it's the intent. If you abbreviate Pakistani it's regarded as a racial slur for example.

Jamie Crowley
23 Posted 19/06/2021 at 15:54:20
Bohunk, again to my understanding, is derogatory due to class.

My wife is from Allen Park, Michigan. It's south Detroit, shoebox homes, and the Hungarians were brought in to work the lines at Ford.

Bohunk was used to describe the Hungarian working class - the indentured servitude carted into town to make the cars.

That's my wife's family's understanding of that word. And lots of people called the Hungarians that populate Allen Park Bohunks.

Jamie Crowley

Si Cooper
27 Posted 19/06/2021 at 16:07:29
Kieran, it's certainly got to be in the way it's used as Jamie has explained. I don't think a contraction automatically makes something derogatory. I think I can say that as a Brit.

Any comments on Lucas Digne? I don't think he did much wrong but there were times when I thought other players ignored him or even stymied his usefulness. Seemed under-used to me.

Kieran Kinsella
28 Posted 19/06/2021 at 16:11:12
Digne wasn't involved a lot but everything seemed to go down the other side.
Dale Self
29 Posted 19/06/2021 at 16:24:20
Yeah France seemed to prefer the right side but produced very little from there.
Jeff Armstrong
30 Posted 19/06/2021 at 16:29:22
Agree there Si regarding Digne, there was loads of occasions when the ball should have gone out to him, seemed some of the French players where reluctant to trust him, and yet on the odd occasion he did get involved he produced a couple of decent crosses.
Mike Gaynes
31 Posted 19/06/2021 at 16:29:57
Jamie #23, that's really weird. I grew up with the term "bohunks" in Chicago and Milwaukee, but it applied exclusively to Bohemians -- German-speakers from Czechoslovakia, now the Czech Republic. Never heard it applied to Hungarians before.
David Pearl
32 Posted 19/06/2021 at 16:33:44
I thought Digne did well, probably better in the first half and put in a great cross that should have been converted. His defending was also solid.

Another good game coming up! And great to see fans again.

Can't wait for the opening game at Goodison with our new signings ready to break the top 6.

Colin Glassar

Danny O’Neill
34 Posted 19/06/2021 at 16:50:22
Never heard that phrase before. The German speaking population of what is now the Czech Republic went by a different name as I always understood Mike.

It's interesting Colin, my repeated tournament favourites, yet seen them play fairly negative in both games so far. Guess it's still the group stages.

Tom Bowers
35 Posted 19/06/2021 at 16:53:41
There is no substitute for class but without consistency it is useless to a team.

Everton have a few players like that and the new manager really has to decide if they are worth keeping.

I don't care who is manager after the revolving door actions of the last ten years. We all get overly optimistic when a new guy comes in and then the big disappointment comes.

France thought this was a cakewalk and were far to casual at times especially around the Hungary box.

There has been some upsets and I am sure there will be one or two more. Sadly, parking the bus paid dividends for the Magyars in that first half scoring with their first shot.

I hate to see total negativity but it does work sometimes and that is why some less talented teams keep playing that way even in front of their own fans.

There is a core of really good players at Goodison and some talented youngsters waiting their opportunity but the right man needs to be appointed not some money grabbing mercenary like Ancellotti.

Robert Tressell
36 Posted 19/06/2021 at 16:57:15
In lacking courage, England and France surrendered to meek draws. Let's get some wingers on both sides of the pitch stretching the play and causing problems.

Jamie Crowley

Jeff Armstrong

David, I've thought this for a long time, maybe the whole DOF model is the problem, Josh King a case in point,Ancelloti was not interested in using him, even when we had no strikers available, for me a manager signs, picks, and uses the players he has identified, I believe we achieved ALL our past success using this blueprint,

why has it become rocket science?

Danny O’Neill
44 Posted 19/06/2021 at 17:29:39
Looked at that long and hard. I think it's on in the first phase. And then the ball falls to Ronaldo who is behind the player so he is definitely onside.

Perfect execution of a counter from a defending corner by Portugal. Ronaldo at 36 bursting forward like he's 18.

David Pearl
45 Posted 19/06/2021 at 17:34:38
Jeff, l agree. But we have Brands and l'm thinking he spends more time trying to sell or loan out players than he does signing them. We have no style or continuation so any new man comes in and starts again, again.

Mike, thanks. It was worth a go.

Another interesting game!!

Mike, Giroude should've started. France's 2nd highest scorer, after Henry. He's gone with Benzema who hasn't played international football for years which is a mistake. Same goes for Dombele. He's hardly played for the last two seasons and it showed.
Jeff Armstrong

Jeff Armstrong
61 Posted 19/06/2021 at 18:13:20
But Colin, I think France are through, so Deschamps may say he's using his squad and reintegrating Benzema into the team for later on in the tourno, Dembele needs game time, he's getting it in the group stages.

Mike 92. Even seeing the replay on itv in the UK it looks offside.

Imagine being at the match and us scoring that goal and straight away getting chalked off and then a minute later it's given as a goal.

Just adds to the confusion and takes away the excitement of a goal.

FIFA need to change the offside rule to any part of the body level is a goal. We could still have var but we would see a lot more goals.

Si Cooper
101 Posted 19/06/2021 at 21:22:40
Why was it harsh David? It's a free kick anywhere else on the pitch. The ball is live and he's taken a Spanish player out of the match.
By ‘spud' do you mean Danny ‘Muppet' Murphy? His commentary is laughable at times. Of course not all contact is a penalty, but when you stud the top of an opponent's foot then it should be. The fact that he got the ball away before being caught is irrelevant.
Si Cooper

David, what does it matter if the ball has ‘gone' even if that term applies in this case? It wasn't as though he'd knocked it into row z. Even ‘mash for brains' Murphy admitted it didn't matter that he'd got the ball away, he was wittering on about the amount of contact (which looked clearly enough for the player to go down for me).
I like potatoes. I'd prefer not to have to think of that idiot every time I see one.
