Great pressure by the Spaniards. Terrible defending, including probably a handball (?) by Croatia.

This game is a good 'un

Danny O’Neill
10 Posted 28/06/2021 at 17:42:17
Croatian keeper all over the place from the onset of that phase of play. Came out too far unnecessarily then had to scramble back. Ironically he made a great save initially but it fell kindly to the Spanish player.
Jamie Crowley
11 Posted 28/06/2021 at 17:52:43
Oh my God that own goal was awful. Keeper took his eyes off the ball completely.

Jeez that's awful.

Danny O’Neill
12 Posted 28/06/2021 at 18:16:56
Just as I was saying the Croatians are back in numbers & that will be difficult to break down.

Great delivery, defender got the wrong side. He was marking outside. Good goal by Spain though.

Barry Rathbone
13 Posted 28/06/2021 at 18:19:02
Good goal that and the correct body shape for whipping in a cross properly not that awful affectation Beckham had of forcing it via a weird foot and body angle

How is it that I can have a 150 Meg download speed on Fibre to the house, and still lose the picture & signal on Sky Go?

Jamie Crowley
17 Posted 28/06/2021 at 18:28:18
This late flag raising offside thing is stupid. Someone's eventually going to get hurt.

When it's so damn obvious, raise your flag. I was watching the Austin FC v Columbus Crew game last night and it was so refreshing to see ARs raising their flags with little to no wait on the offside calls.

Michael -

Chrome is the way to go when streaming. I can't stream a thing through Safari, never, ever have a problem with Chrome. Not sure why one browser is so superior to another. Chrome is key though.

Danny O’Neill
19 Posted 28/06/2021 at 18:32:30
Said that throughout the season Jamie. They're going to allow olay to go on and it will result in injury. Make the call then look at it in my opinion.
Jamie Crowley
20 Posted 28/06/2021 at 18:34:32
3-1. Think that's it honestly. Croatia sent packing.

Agree Danny!

Danny O’Neill
21 Posted 28/06/2021 at 18:35:56
Defender totally misjudged the flight of the ball there and then falls over to make it look worse.

On day one of Wimbledon, game set and match as they say.

David Pearl
22 Posted 28/06/2021 at 18:36:18
Michael its usually 30 seconds behind even if you use it in the UK. Although using through a vpn doesn't help. Some vpns are faster than others.

Game, set and match.

Croatia stutter in front of goal and end up not even shooting.

Michael Kenrick
23 Posted 28/06/2021 at 18:37:37
Yes, Jamie, Chrome is normally my first choice. Sky in the UK is like DirectTV over there and I was sucked in by their App, which is not as stable as it should be.

Mind, I've been having a rough time trying to read the utter crap that is the Liverpool Echo webshite via Chrome.

I switched to Jabber Bill's Microsoft Edge and it works a lot better.

Danny O’Neill
24 Posted 28/06/2021 at 18:43:20
I avoid the Echo website Michael. The pop ups and adware are annoying.

Oh hello

Jamie Crowley
25 Posted 28/06/2021 at 18:44:00
Michael -

I'm a snooty pro-Apple guy. I couldn't browse via any Microsoft means. Edge is shite.

I do run bootcamp on one Mac mini as Windows is great for the very, very few number of games I have on computer. That's the extent of my Windows usage, and it's filtered through an Apple app in bootcamp! ;0)

And how in the world did that ball almost not cross the line!

8-9 minutes with stoppage. Croatia not dead yet?

Michael Kenrick
26 Posted 28/06/2021 at 18:45:16
Thanks, David. I'm gonna need a lot of help next season – I've been well spoilt for years in the USA with every game on NBC and then, with Covid back here, every Premier League game televised in the UK when normally it would be barely half of them.

I shall need to master some streaming tricks for next season!

Jamie Crowley
27 Posted 28/06/2021 at 18:46:42
Michael, out of curiosity, did you enjoy your time in America?
Do you miss it at all, or are you happy to be back home?

David Pearl
28 Posted 28/06/2021 at 18:46:50
I travel a lot (not so much recently of course) but the hoops you go through just to watch a game of football.

Spain made hard work of this.

Croats playing the game that terrifies the technocrats - balls out park footy.
Jamie Crowley
40 Posted 28/06/2021 at 18:55:41
You have to admire the crap out of Croatia. Down 2 goals, a lot of teams would have mentally packed it in and been knocked out.

You could see the Croatians redoubling efforts, wanting to stay in the tournament, and telling Spain, "Not today!"

Brilliant.

Michael Kenrick

Danny O’Neill
62 Posted 28/06/2021 at 20:21:09
What a game that was.

Moving onto France v Switzerland. Surprise early goal.

Random one, I often wonder what language the players communicate in given its a country with a 65% German majority and then the rest roughly split between French & Italian.

Like Belgium. Dutch or French?

Jeff Armstrong

Is he Embolo or Ebolo ?

First time I've seen him. according to the commentator he has struggled to get in the M'Gladbach team.

Not on this form he wouldnt. He has stormed the Bastille this half. Interesting to see if he is a two halves player

After the craziness of the NBA game 'twixt Croatia and Spain, I'm now really enjoying the France-Swiss game.

It's being played very much on Swiss terms at the moment.

I'll wager an imaginary bet that a certain Tony Abrahams of this parish will be enjoying the Swiss set up against France's 3 centre backs.

Using the whole width of the park with pacey direct players attacking not just the flanks, but also from central midfield. Exellent crossfield passing to switch the direction of attack.

Pogba denied space to play his quarter back role. Mbappe being kept on a short leash by his marker also. Kante not an influence on the game at all because the Swiss are offloading the ball before he can harry them into coughing it up.

Very, very impressed by the Swiss.

Jeff Armstrong
71 Posted 28/06/2021 at 21:10:03
Good game this, Swiss definitely got the measure of France here, Embolo excellent so far, Rabiot has been less than ordinary in all 4 games, is Brands really considering him?

From dominating the game and a chance of having two feet, not just one foot firmly in the quarters, to going 2-1 down in the blink of an eye.

Football, eh?

Well, that was all very mundane and boring!

Other than a 15 minute purple patch by France during which they scored their 3 goals, the Swiss have been the better team over the 90.

Really hope they get across the line in extra time WITHOUT penalties, judged on the one they had saved.

Will Mabon

I think everyone likes to see goals, but the best games of football are when both teams are full of attacking energy, and whoever gets the Everton job, needs to get us a lot fitter, faster, and bring in some aggressive runners, because looking back in time at our winning teams, this is how we usually won!

David Pearl

I don't agree with carrying the yellow cards over from the first round stages.

Close from the Swiss. What a game!

We have this to look forward to under Benitez. Cough

Best game by a mile so far.
Brent Stephens
153 Posted 28/06/2021 at 22:10:27
Jeff, this "viewer" who phoned in to play didn't have a TV so was watching a telly through a TV shop window. Couldn't see it properly which resulted in big delay in telling Bernie to "fire".
Tony McNulty
154 Posted 28/06/2021 at 22:10:30
Listening on the wireless here too. Next door's
Brent Stephens

Wonderful to watch.

Jeff Armstrong

Mike Gaynes
166 Posted 28/06/2021 at 22:17:50

What are people's views? Do we want penalties or not?
Julian Exshaw
170 Posted 28/06/2021 at 22:19:50
Mike G. To be honest, they feel there aren't enough born and bred locals in the team. Lets just leave it that way.
Jamie Crowley

Another defence splitter from Pogba
Jamie Crowley
176 Posted 28/06/2021 at 22:22:22

Dave Abrahams
177 Posted 28/06/2021 at 22:22:22
Jeff (106), when I lived in town the fella next door was always outside looking in watching my telly, I went out out one night and pulled him up and asked him why he was always looking in and watching my telly, “ what the fuck are you talking about “ he said “ I'm looking in my own house watching my own telly” I was out of order to be honest, I didn't realise he had a turn in his eye.
Brent Stephens

Julian, l was drivng with my ex near ish to Basel and she pulled over to get the sking results on. Although she to a game with me once. And it was 0-0 so didnt want to go again. Cant blame her

Some of the passing by Pogba and Xhaka just brilliant

Mike Gaynes
185 Posted 28/06/2021 at 22:26:07
Pens would be advantage France IMO. Better keeper.
Tony McNulty
186 Posted 28/06/2021 at 22:26:16
Can anyone remember who it was who said you should change your keeper before penalty shoot outs? It will psyche out the opposition and make them think you have a super shot stopper.
Frank Wade
187 Posted 28/06/2021 at 22:26:31
Spare a thought for Arsenal fans watching Xhaka play like this
David Pearl
188 Posted 28/06/2021 at 22:26:43

Jamie Crowley

Mike -

There would be IMMENSE pressure on France if it went to PKs.

Tony McNulty
192 Posted 28/06/2021 at 22:28:42
Jeff - not too bad if you are a morning person. I am decidedly not.
Brent Stephens
193 Posted 28/06/2021 at 22:29:30
Jeff, Stan Boardman pinched that - from Dave Abrahams 1878.
Jeff Armstrong

PKs. Let's go.
Jeff Armstrong
201 Posted 28/06/2021 at 22:32:45
Tony195, great keeper, but he hardly ever saved penalties.
Julian Exshaw
202 Posted 28/06/2021 at 22:33:33
Who's your money in Jamie? I reckon the Swiss have the better shot stopper.
Darren Hind
203 Posted 28/06/2021 at 22:34:01
What a pity a match like this will be decided by the lottery that is penalties.

Neither team deserve to go out like that.

Jamie Crowley
204 Posted 28/06/2021 at 22:34:46
Julian -

Switzerland. Not betting with my head. If France get knocked out, I still am alive in my family's Euro pool! ;0)

Ian Burns

I disagree - the French will do this
Jeff Armstrong
206 Posted 28/06/2021 at 22:34:58
Come on Switzerland, love an underdog, and they've been brilliant tonight.
Mike Gaynes
207 Posted 28/06/2021 at 22:35:18
Lloris already saved one pen. He's bigger and quicker than Sommer.

But I'm rooting for the Swiss too.

Jeff (190), No, Arthur Askey 1954.
Tony McNulty
210 Posted 28/06/2021 at 22:37:39
Jeff - I hadn't really twigged that. I heard Big Nev a couple of years ago at the London Everton Fans' AGM. He said saving penalties was basically luck
Anthony A Hughes
211 Posted 28/06/2021 at 22:37:45
Nice start
Jeff Armstrong
212 Posted 28/06/2021 at 22:39:19
Far too witty for Arthur Askey Dave, surely.
Jamie Crowley
213 Posted 28/06/2021 at 22:39:43
I swear to God CBs never miss pens.
Brent Stephens
214 Posted 28/06/2021 at 22:39:46
Let the loser go out through a fantastic penalty from the opposition not a ballooned miss by themselves.
Jeff Armstrong
215 Posted 28/06/2021 at 22:40:34
Fuck, next door just switched off!
Jamie Crowley
216 Posted 28/06/2021 at 22:40:57

However shame we wont see more of France. So its an England ltaly final?

Got to say, I didn't even consider the Swiss when looking at this tournament, but they have just gone toe-to-toe with the best team in the world.

France fought like Champions. The Swiss fought like demons. What a fucken game!

An incredible day of football, crazy defending, wonderful goals, reputations dismissed and a thoroughly enjoyable couple of matches.

Having been starved of entertainment by Everton for large parts of last season, today has rekindled my affection for the game. You don't get too many games like today's but that's the sort of football that neutrals love to watch and even partizans would rather watch teams trying to score, rather than watching pointless passing with no purpose.

Dave Abrahams
253 Posted 28/06/2021 at 22:53:35
Jeff (225) you must have gone next door but one, glad you saw it!!

Will Mabon
255 Posted 28/06/2021 at 22:53:39
Well. Swiss can face anyone if they can replicate that performance. Have we just seen the next Greece?

How fantastic to see a game filled with positive forward passes and movement from both teams, at all stages of the game... and teams obviously allowed to play that way by their management.

Mike Gaynes
256 Posted 28/06/2021 at 22:56:40
I haven't checked the schedule. What games are on tomorrow?

David Pearl

Brent, you can tell Mike spends too much time on TW. I didn't think Americans did sarcasm!
Anthony A Hughes
260 Posted 28/06/2021 at 23:01:06
One of the things I've enjoyed so far is the amount of players who like to run with the ball and take players on without stopping and turning back to play a pass.
Neil Copeland

Anthony,

It shows how rare it's become in many levels of the game. International managers so far this tournament seem mostly positive, hope it continues.
