Mina own goal condemns Colombia to defeat

Sunday, 20 June, 2021 14comments  |  Jump to most recent

A second-half own goal by Yerry Mina unfortunately proved decisive in Colombia's clash with Peru in the Copa America tonight.

The score was level at 1-1 in the 64th minute when a ball across the face of goal caught Mina in the chest and bounced in and though Los Cafeteros had chances to grab an important point, they couldn't find the breakthrough in the final 25 minutes.

Peru had led 1-0 at half-time thanks to Sergio Peña's 17th-minute strike, a crisp effort past the goalkeeper after the ball had come back to him off the post.

However, Colombia levelled eight minutes into the second half from the penalty spot after Pedro Gallese had brought down Miguel Borja and the striker converted emphatically from 12 yards.

Despite the defeat, Colombia remain second in Group B but have played a game more than all the other four teams bar Venezuela. Nevertheless, with four of five teams from the group progressing to the next round, they stand a good chance of going through even if they lose their final group match to leaders Brazil.

I hope none of the Colombian drug cartels had any money riding on the match. Colombian defender Andres Escobar was murdered in 1994 after scoring an own goal....

Nick, its hard to resist the first thing that pops into your head. Hopefully he comes back to us fit and confident. I keep forgetting to catch these games.

I really struggle at times to understand our fans, surprised at the vile banners at the ground against Benitez, have you ever been to an away game? The away fans and I mean some of them are horrible in every way, the type that put these banners Up, the type that abuse Bill Kenwright getting out his car at the ground ( Blue Union) I was there seen it and heard it. Dont kid your selves we are all wonderful supporters we have as many bad apples as the RS to be frank.

Paul Nicklas@4,

What has that comment got to do with the article about Yerry Mina and Colombia?

Only 4 of the 5 teams qualify to the next round!! How on earth do they handle the pressure?

Poor Yerry... wasn't anything he could do about the OG. It was a shocking defeat, nonetheless.

Colombia still needs only one more point to qualify for the knockout round, so they're OK for the moment, but if they don't pull their shit together quickly and start scoring goals, Yerry's going to be watching the WC on TV next year.

Wednesday night's Brazil/Colombia game featuring Mina vs. Richarlison should be interesting. 1am Thursday for you folks in the UK.

Nice job Paul, literally cut-and-pasting your post from another thread onto this completely unrelated thread for no discernible reason.

Bloody hell, one mention of Colombia and you can't resist trotting out the old stereotype about drugs, just like all scousers are scallies and will have the wheels off your car if you stop at a traffic light. Doesn't that shit get boring?

I've lived in Colombia since 2008 and the ONLY time I've seen any of the white stuff is in a hostel, being taken by tourists.

How about we talk about football for a change? It wasn't a particularly good match, Colombia lacked creativity, needed someone like James maybe?

As for the own goal, not a lot he could have done about it.

Kudos to Peru I say...always had a soft spot for them after seeing them for the very first time back in the World Cup in '78...jeez,I can still that amazing free kick by their main man at the time... Cubillas.

They have the best kit in world football too.
