Everton among clubs interested in Caicedo
While a report by Dario Extra claimed that it had come down to the Blues or MLS club Atlanta United, there have been suggestions of interest from Chelsea and Manchester United.
Indeed, there are reports today that United are in pole position for the midfielder who has been likened to N'golo Kanté, and that their move for him is only being held up at this point by a work permit.

A Kante/Gueye type who can pass, shoot and carry the ball. Probably more a player for the future than right now but could be useful now and brilliant in a few years time.

Unfair on the U23 coaches in my opinion. They are doing okay with what they have available to work with. If they are good enough for the manager, they are good enough for me.

You normally have a good nose for these young whipper-snappers. Isn't it nice to see the club linked to young, fresh players on the up rather than old veterans looking for a swansong?

I remember one in particular, a young Costa Rican left-back who tore the US apart in a qualifier. I posted here several times my hope that Moyes would buy him. And damned if he didn't finally do just that!
That's why my personal list of all-time greatest Everton goals will always include Oviedo Baby At Old Trafford. I literally cried for joy. Hell, I still get misty-thinking about it.

Mr Gaynes is available as our Americas scout.
He has already made you millions with one signing.
What is your take on Gabigol, Mike?

He was touted on here by many fans, much like Bas Dost. I was never really convinced that he was worth the huge sum paid. But that's what teams in the Premier League are willing to pay for a striker.
Not long ago, people were booing Romelu Lukaku at Goodison Park for ‘not trying hard enough'. Laughable really.

He could get away with a lack of effort (at times) playing for Everton, but this wasn't the case at Man Utd, and some people wonder why we never seem to do as well once we feel pressure.
Reading what people are saying, then this is exactly the type of signing I'd love Everton to be making, and I will always say, if a player is good enough then he's old enough, especially if he's willing to work.

Brent #8, I don't think we have one. At all. To my knowledge we've never signed a young US prospect. I've never even heard of us scouting one.
Mike #10, I'm a Biden man, but your second guess would be closer. (Kidding, Jamie.)
Several TWers have also sent me images of a Chicago Toffees banner mounted on a Capitol railing during the riot, but the Chicago Evertonians Supporters' Club has posted the following message on their Twitter page:
"The image of the Chicago Evertonians flag at yesterday's events in DC is a fake. It has nothing to do with our supporters club in any way, shape or form. Given the significance of the events, we would ask that this image is not circulated any further."
The owner of AJ Hudson's, the #1 Everton pub in Chicago, is a fella named Jamie Lenard who used to post on TW occasionally. I'd love to hear more from him about this.

I witnessed the boos myself at Goodison many times (in The Paddock).
Personally I think Rom gave his all, in his own way. The result being an outstanding goals return. He was a hell of a finisher, put him through with a defender and a goalkeeper to beat and he was phenomenal.
He may not have chased around the front line and pressed the channels. Some players are clever enough to know how to get the best from themselves. I put Rom in this category. He played to his own strengths and the result for our team was a terrific goal scorer. Selfish maybe, but some of the best strikers are.
And although some fans would love an Ashley Barnes or Jon Walters type, slide-tackling full-backs and buzzing around, closing down. I know what I prefer. A goal machine, a world-class striker.

Allegedly, Man Utd were interested, but it fell through, does anyone know why? Also, does anyone have any idea about what sort of figure would secure his signature? Lastly what would the Work Permit (usually the stumbling block) situation be?

Obviously some such signings don't work out – but you tend to recover the fee or even make some money when moving a young player on. If Brands can also find some young forwards, that would be ideal.

We may have a shout as the path to he first team may be better for him at Everton. Allan being at the club will be a draw to him too, what a midfield player to train with and learn from. So I don't think the fat lady has sung just yet.
21 Posted 08/01/2021 at 10:00:35
It's true he's not played a huge amount of first-team football (25 games) but what he has played has been pretty impressive.
There's nothing like a South American wonderkid to get the juices flowing; they rarely turn out to be as good as expected but this lad looks like he has qualities we could really use: an athletic and dynamic centre-midfielder who can tackle, dribble, pass and score. Gueye with goals? Fingers crossed, though if Man Utd really want him, I should think that is where he will end up.

Thanks.
Jay,
Do you rate Gabigol? Good scoring rate but not sure of quality of the league he plays in.
23 Posted 08/01/2021 at 10:32:05
He's been 'linked' with Everton so he can be sure of being seen very soon in a Tottenham shirt.
24 Posted 08/01/2021 at 10:43:07
Yet according to the poll on T/W 70% think this is good business.
25 Posted 08/01/2021 at 11:00:13
If we recoup his fee and most of what we've paid him, whilst removing his wages from our liabilities list, we can put it down to experience and invest in better.
He reminds me in a way of Veron at Manchester Utd 20 years ago. He was brilliant everywhere else in the world but not in England.
As one of the old heroes from across the park who did the Anglo/Italian switch the other way famously said, "It's like being in another country."
26 Posted 08/01/2021 at 11:08:03
Slightly off topic but the link with Adrien Rabiot has surfaced again, and would be a much more attractive proposition than Khedira and 8 years younger. The only thing there he is supposed to be difficult to deal with and having his Mum as his agent doesn't help either, but Juventus are looking to get him off the books as soon as is possible. (allegedly)

Otherwise, Amad Diallo shows Man Utd trying to build some depth in quality coming through - along with Uruguayan Pellestri. They've been stung with little return from high cost established players. Sounds familiar.
Kean, in my view, is a good signing. He suffered from us being a complete mess, DCL getting much better than expected and COVID-19. But, even with all that, we will still make money on him. These are good sorts of signings that give us access to potentially world class players who will kick us on, instead of players like Josh King who add a bit of depth but no great quality.

He's moved on Haller and I can only assume that is to free up funds to bring players in. Probably a striker. And whilst buying strikers was never his strong point there is no doubt that Moyes can be a shrewd operator in the transfer market.
I bring this up because I'd still like to see us attempt to make shrewd signings. By that I don't mean young players with potential who maybe could be an asset in the future. I mean thinking outside the box to bring a player in who is ready right now.
Soucek is a player I highlighted a long while back on this website. I was surprised at the value he actually went for but no doubt he has been a shrewd success. 8 goals in 30 games from midfield and a constant threat. Box to box. Not the greatest player in the world but I think he'd get a game for us, and I felt that the first time I saw him play.
31 Posted 10/01/2021 at 14:55:45
I'd say Lukaku has some very good attributes that could make him become a really top player but I don't ever think it will happen because he doesn't work hard enough on a regular basis to become one of the better players of his generation.

Worth a speculative punt before the cat really is let out of the bag. He can tackle, pass, create, score and even run which is something quite unique within our current midfield.
Just don't put him with the U23s under the tutelage of Everton Old Boys FC.
