Romero back on Everton's radar

| Saturday, 22 May 2021 16comments  |  Jump to last
Sergio Romero is being linked with a move to Everton again while Juventus are also credited with serious interest in the Argentine goalkeeper.

Romero was seriously targeted by the Blues last summer as the club sought to sign a back-up keeper capable of providing competition for Jordan Pickford but Manchester United's asking price for a player entering the final year of his contract remained far too high.

Everton ended up signing Robin Olsen on loan from Roma and both Carlo Ancelotti and Marcel Brands are reportedly due to sit down this coming week to discuss the Swede's future, along with that of forward Josh King.

Juventus apparently want Romero as cover for Wojciech Szczesny while United will likely not exercise an extra year on the 34-year-old's contract so that they can get him off their books.

Good keeper, but we should only be interested if he's willing to take a big pay cut.

On his expiring contract at Old Trafford, Romero's being paid £70k/week, and that's way too much for a backup keeper. By contrast, Olsen is on only £19k/week.

A lot of Man Utd fans rate him as their best keeper. If he's still playing as No 1 for Argentina and keeping Martinez at Villa as the national No 2, he's got to be an upgrade on Olsen, who's also done a good job in his own right.

He's just free and experienced back up to Pickford. No-one will give him a bumper wage, including us. Not a big story. Just one of those sensible signings to ensure goalkeeper cover at modest cost.

Flle under 'Rubbish' as we have Olsen who is very happy to stay.

Does this mean that Virginia is just the No 3 keeper or is it feared that a bad injury to Pickford would leave us with just a couple of junior keepers?

Just as well that Donnarumma didn't start with us. Is goalkeeper still the only position that a player can be signed at any time due to injury?

34 for a goalkeeper is not too old (Buffon has been playing into his 40s).

Romero can share the burden with Pickford over the course of a season, with Virginia getting the odd few games in the early rounds of the League and FA Cups.

I’d stick with Olsen. He’s been decent enough and seems happy.

Sorry but I don't see how signing Man Utd's third-choice keeper is going to be an improvement on what we already have. If that's the case, we're better off keeping Olsen.

There are many better (and younger) options out there if we're seriously looking for someone to compete with Pickford. Such as Napoli's Alex Meret (whom we are linked with).

A big NO to Szczesny as well!

We're talking about a reserve, back-up keeper who may get a few games per season. We can't be blowing £70k wages here, it will detract from necessary strengthening elsewhere. If Olsen is on £19k, it's good value to the club. Keep him, he's been steady and a relatively safe pair of hands.

If this is a priority signing above all else, with the bunch of misfits we have, then the future looks dire without a major rebuild of the current squad.

Olsen's a perfectly adequate backup keeper, if he wants to stay. If he doesn't, Romero is a perfectly solid alternative - provided he's willing to take less money. Not sure there's anything more that needs to be said.

Pickford looks to be growing while Olsen does the job on a decent dime. Not where we need to be tweaking since we have some major changes needed elsewhere.

Everything about recruitment from goalkeeper to centre-forward is irrelevant until EFC discover and correct why their players do not give a shit.

Olsen may well have changed his mind after being robbed at knife point with his family.

It is only second choice so no major dramas, providing Pickford can keep his new found level of concentration for the full 96 minutes...

Everything Bill said at 13...couldn’t say it any better.

Someone needs to figure out:

1. Why our players shit themselves whenever there’s anything at stake
2. Why our players lack determination, commitment and desire on a regular basis

Until these issues are resolved, I’ll continue to feel like Big Nev during a half-time team talk

We should bring in Jiri Pavlenka, and keep Pickford as backup.
