Thank you, Rob for another excellent article bringing a name to life. Meticulously researched and cogently written.

Great piece on a true Everton legend. Love reading about how so many of our old players had small businesses close to Goodison when they finished playing. Thanks Rob

Thanks, Rob, for a really great read.

When I was a child an elderly neighbour lent me his copy of Thomas Keates's book. He'd have seen all of those players!

Every time I'm in a second-hand book, or charity shop, I look out for it but I suppose the chances of coming across a copy are virtually nil.

Hello Bill,

I can't recall where you're located but the original Thomas Keates book was reprinted and reissued a few years ago. A search for "The History of Everton Football Club 1878-1929" shows you a number of purchase options, including this one at AbeBooks for £21.60 plus shipping.

And scrolling down, they have copies of the original for considerably more…

Rob, what a brilliant article about Jack Taylor, a true great in my humble opinion.

My grandfather, himself a good player, used to speak of John Taylor as a brilliant player who he had the pleasure of meeting when they both worked on the docks. Loved the description of a winger... get the ball and go, forward, then into the middle... you never see that now.

Used to always put the defence on the back foot, give the attacker the edge. Many years later, Sir Alf Ramsey put paid to wingers, a rare breed now... makes you wonder, if you could find a Jack Taylor, a Dave Thomas, then Calvert-Lewin would excel.

Great piece. When he signed, he got £4 a week, which today is about £550. The bloody U18s are probably on more!!!

Can just imagine how hard the footy was then – bad enough in the 50s & 60s! Quagmire pitches, dubbined boots and cassey footballs – sore when you headed the lace! Throat-high tackles!

I would loved to have met some of these greats and seen some of these games. Just shows where we are now with these overpaid poseurs.

Rob, is the Jack Sharp mentioned anything to do with the old sports shop in Liverpool? I used to buy my football boots from there. Great shop.
