Player of the Season

With the season coming to an end, it would be interesting to have a fans vote or opinion on their Everton Player of the Season and also Young Player of the Season.

I've decided to put up two different categories so that I can include two players.

For the Young Player of the Season, I am going with Jarrad Branthwaite, although very very close for the Player of the Season, I wanted to ensure the other player got a mention.

Branthwaite is a player that you hope and pray stays with us at the very least for another season, his link-up with Tarkowski has for me been the best centre-half pairing within the entire Premier League.

Now the Player of the Season is much tougher; there have been a few contenders, but for me, my vote goes to Vitalii Mykolenko, He has had a great season and improved beyond belief.

Not much got past him on the left; on the whole, he stood up and made the opposing player play the ball elsewhere. Not many players got the better of him by skinning him down the wing.

Others may look to Jordan Pickford, James Tarkowski, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and his re-emergance… but I am sticking with my two of Mykolenko and Branthwaite.

Definitely Branthwaite for Young player and possibly even senior Player of the Season.

For me it would be Pickford although I agree that there is a good case for Mykolenko.

Is this going to be a poll or just qualitative comments?

Don't we need a poll with Brians's two categories?

Branthwaite and Pickford, by the way.

There aren't many candidates but I'd say Tarkowski and Branthwaite.

Tarkowski for young player Robert? Agree, there are not many.

Branthwaite is the obvious winner for Young Player of the Season. Not many candidates for that though I do think Onana has done a lot better than many people will credit him for.

Player of the season for me is Tarkowski. Him and Branthwaite and Pickford have been the spine on which our solid defense is based and Tarkowski in particular has been a real leader, marshalling the troops and playing every single minute which can be unusual for an outfield player these days.

Special mention for Gueye who has been a crucial, calming presence in the middle and popped up with some crucial goals at the business end of the season. And also for McNeil who has worked incredibly hard under difficult personal circumstances.

For me Pickford gets "Player of the Season" and Young gets "Young Player of the Season".

A poll would be good.

For me, Manager's Player would be Tarkowski closely followed by Pickford.

Young Player is not in dispute. Branthwaite.

Player's Player, the one you always want would be Branthwaite.

Let's just hope it isn't his Everton send-off. He's a very special talent.

Tarkowski all the way for me..

It's hard to split Pickford from Branthwaite and Tarkowski. Each has made the odd mistake, but each have been magnificent, and absolutely pivotal to the team.

Different category, but Mykolenko's improvement under Dyche, and in this season in particular, has been spectacular.

As far as Player of the Season goes, I personally would find it hard to choose between Pickford, Tarkowski and Branthwaite.

As far as Young Player goes there's no other candidate other than Branthwaite. Can't believe he wasn't included in the Premier League's nominations for this.

Branthwaite would be in anyone's Young Player of the Season list. Unless you are a hidebound reactionary managing the England team.

For overall player, he is on a shortlist with Mykolenko (Most improved player), Tarkowski, and Pickford (Best in the league?).

Given that they all form part of the most overworked defence in the league, I can't see any forward or midfielder getting a shout.

And before anyone shouts 'Sheffield United'. Their defence simply didn't work. If we had average figures for creativity and scoring to back up where we are at the back we would be competing in the top 6 or 7.

It seems we are all in general if not universal agreement.

Good shout on Idrissa. An unsung hero for the team. I was a bit concerned when Onana lifted and threw one of his kids into the air during the lap of appreciation! Fortunately it landed well!

Player of the season Tarkowski (nearly Pickford)

Young player of the season Branthwaite (nearly Mykolenko)

When we signed Tarkowski I said we needed somebody “horrible”. I am sure our opposition agree - the lad is as hard as nails. Just what we needed.

I have been very critical of Pickford at times but he has been great this season.

Branthwaite is better than Stones - it will be very hard to hang on to him. The good news is that if we do have to sell him there will be plenty of suitors meaning we will get a top price for him.

I have always liked Mykolenko. He has come on in leaps and bounds and will only get better.

I think there have been a number of candidates in Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Pickford over the whole season, some good mentions in Mykolenko and Onana but the rest have blown hot and cold over the season.

For me:

Player of the Season: Pickford
Young Player of the Season: Branthwaite
Most Improved Player: Mykolenko
Most Valued Player: Tarkowski
Most "Surprising" Player: Gomes (I really thought he was done but he still has class)
Most likely to be sold / released: Harrison, Onana. Branthwaite, Doucoure… but I wouldn't be surprised if we sold Pickford too.

Tarkowski for me as player of the season.
Branthwaite young player of the season,
Gana was a big help when he played, made the defence stronger besides getting the team forward quicker.
Dominic Calvert Lewin had his bad spells, most probably through not being completely fit, but he was pivotal in holding the ball up on his own, always looking for support which rarely came.
Dyche gets a special mention from me for the way he held the whole club together during a very wearisome, worrying season especially when the ten point deduction was announced.
Not forgetting the ones who have always been here through thick and thin and will continue be that way no matter what, take a bow Everton fans everywhere and a big pat on the back to the away support.

Player of the Season – Tarkowski

Young player – Branthwaite

Honourable mentions to Pickford, Gueye and Mykolenko.

There was a chance to vote last week through the club official site. I followed one of the links from a club email. Maybe still live?

I voted Tarkowski and Branthwaite. My son went for Jarrad in both categories. You'd never guess we were both centre-halves!

There was also a poll for each Premier League club on the BBC website a few days ago. I went for Tarkowski again but Branthwaite was leading that with 51% at the time I cast my vote.

Tarkowski and Branthwaite, the main reason why this team keeps so many clean sheets, aided also by the admirable Gana Gueye and Pickford.

Pickford deserves a special mention if only for twice winning personal battles with the mouthy neanderthal Geordies, fixtures in years gone by he's struggled with.

Old Player of the Season: Young

Tarkowski is a great backs-to-the-wall-defender. I think we would have been relegated without him, but for me he simply isn't good enough with the ball at his feet to be called "Payer" of the Season.

I don't think this is a particularly good season to name a "Player of the season". The fact is, it was all about survival. Several players sacrificed their own game for the common good. This was a struggle. A fight and I would back Tarkowski against anyone in a fight.

Despite a couple of big errors, young Jarrad spent the entire season learning on the job and what a magnificent fist he made of it. Class, composure. A proper footballer who was more than happy to follow his captain's lead by never shying away from the fight. He gets my vote.

My favourite performance was from the man I have criticised more than any other. The sight of rat boy Robertson leaving the Goodison pitch with Evertonian jeers ringing in his ears made our derby victory all the more sweeter for me.

Jack Harrison hadn't just out-played and out-fought him. He'd run the little bastard into the ground.

Tarkowski for me. A born leader.

Brilliant as Branthwaite has been, I wonder how he'd cope elsewhere when he doesn't have a general alongside him? Something for him to think about if he moves? Pickford, brilliant as ever, playing as well as he can do given certain physical limitations. Those three alone are the main reason we stayed up – comfortably in the end.

But we need to find a way of winning that doesn't depend on scoring first and keeping a clean sheet.

I'll save John Hall a few keystrokes here: Jazz Branners!

I'll go along with Tark as the main man. It must be stated given his attributes and assignments that Myko has been immense. No, he doesn't get forward without some wobbles but his shutdowns have been massive for us. Without him Tark and Branners would have been opened up much more and we would probably be down.

And good move Robert, there should be a category for utility player and Young takes the prize. He filled gaps that no one else could and it isn't easy playing various positions and fiduring out how to play with different combinations in a somewhat dysfunctional squad.

A measure of how good Branthwaite has been is that other players have been tried next to Tarkowski but never as good as young Jarrad.

Tarkowski however is a very good leader and without being brilliant himself has really been a steady influence on the whole team, including putting Pickford in his place.

We had Mountfield, Ratcliffe, Watson etc who were never great with the ball at their feet but had other attributes to help the team out. Tarkowski all day long as our Player of the Season.

Player of the Season = Tarkowski with Branthwaite as runner--up. Most blocks and 1:1 duels won in the Premier League this season.

Young Player = Branthwaite with Mykolenko as runner-up (although Hunt gets a mention for being on the bench for about 300 games).

Everton have had an amazing defensive season, with Pickford being very solid and reliable as well.

What we are left with in 3 months time is a mystery but it has been enjoyable to have confidence in our team not collapsing (Chelsea apart) this season.

Branthwaite by a country mile. Count how many poor games he's had all season? The lad is pure class. Needs some luck with injuries, but he'll have a career as good as John Stones the way he's going.

Tarkowski 2nd, Pickford 3rd. Shout out for Gana as well. Yes, he can't pass the ball – but God we miss him when he's out.

Well summed up Dave @15.

Also other Dave @ 20. It's been a tough ride and it is no surprise it's our defenders and keeper getting the mentions, as well as Idrissa.

Ray @21, I like my military analogies. I recently referred to Tarkowski as a Colonel, but happy you've promoted him to General. The young Lieutenant Branthwaite has been near perfect. Class act.

It seems discriminatory in this age to have a Young Player award but not an Old Player of the Season. Or I guess, "Senior" or "Vintage" or "Seasoned" Player of the Season.

So I will nominate Gana Gueye for that. Sorry, Seamus, you had too many injuries, and Ashley… well you had some good moments but some really bad ones.

Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Pickford, all equally Players of the Season.

A special mention for Gueye and Calvert-Lewin for coming good.

As for the comment that Tarkowski is not good with the ball at his feet, he's one of the best passers of the ball.

Despite the well reasoned claims for Pickford, Myko, Gana and Mcneill and latterly DCL I feel consistency is the key ingredient.

And I have no hesitation in advocating Tarks for player of the season and Jarrad for young player of the season.

In other news Gana and Young offered 1 year extensions with Gomes, Lonergan, Danjuma set to leave. And apparently we are in talks with Leeds about Harrison. Alli to continue rehab at the club despite being out of contract.

Plus Maupay may be returning!

Its Pickford for me, he is a big game player, which is why there is no other candidate for England no1, pulls of great saves at vital moments. Tarky is well worth a shout, always plays with a smile on his face, which is so rare these days with all the hype and pressure. Gueye has been absolutely crucial for us and I remember plenty on here giving him stick earlier in the season, but I know I wasnt on my own sticking up for him. I think Branthwaite has come on leaps and bounds because of the influence of Tarkowski
Rob Jones

Maupay's shithousery, while annoying, is forgiveable. He'd be very useful in the Doucoure role, the role he was brought in to fulfil in the first place. As for Gomes, he's done an admirable job this season, under the circumstances.

Onana would be my most disappointing player of the season if we had such a category.

Branthwaite, Tarkowski and Pickford have been excellent.

Dwight McNeil’s form has been a bit up and down, but he deserves great credit for plugging away during such difficult family circumstances.

I'll go with Tarkowski. He really is the anchor of the defense and a real team leader.

Andy Crooks

Play Maupay behind Calvert-Lewin and the difference in our ability to score goals would be remarkable.

Player of the Season for me would be Jarrad Branthwaite. If he is sold for what he is worth this summer, he could be the Player of the Decade for us
