At the BBC Sport website, Matthew Hobbs documents the remarkable turnaround from the brink of relegation when David Moyes took over, to the new era and squad rebuild for life at Bramley-Moore Dock.

"Everton have signed nine players at a net cost of £97M (based on initial fees), their highest net outlay in a summer transfer window and more than they had spent over the previous seven seasons combined (£71M). The figure of £97M far surpasses any season in the club's Premier League history, with the potential for further arrivals in the January window.

“It is a significant turnaround for a club which have twice been subject to points deductions for breaching profit and sustainability regulations (PSR) and only escaped relegation on the final day of the season two years ago.”

The report goes on to explain why Everton can spend money again after years of penury; the potential financial bonus of increased income from the new Hill Dickinson Stadium; the significance of signing Jack Grealish, that brings more leadership into the dressing room; and the possibility tha Everton could win their first trophy since 1995.

All is reinforced with quotes from Leon Osman, who does a great job projecting Everton whenever he is a pundit on TV or radio.

And there's a very similar article at EPL Index:

Well if we are ever to compete for trophies then money had to be spent, but having the right person to spend the money wisely is the real key. Koeman was given a fortune to spend and wasted it.
I know its early days but our new owners seem to understand what's needed to produce a successful team. Obviously until we start getting into Europe then we will still have to be careful in how we spend the money, but the club seems to be in a better position than its been in for years. There is an excitement around the fans going the game, obviously going into a World class stadium has given everybody a buzz, but the last 3 games has seen us play the sort of attacking football we havent seen in a long time.

Interesting to see that the BBC are creating a narrative of our net spend, which is comparatively pennies compared to the larger spends. I'm pretty sure they weren't writing articles about how we were spending fuck all for four years when the team and squad were the drizzling shits.

Rob, it’s not the first time either. It is so we can be positioned as having failed in a level playing field.

I know it is off this topic, but of interest to us all...the Football Association has today charged Chelsea FC with breaches of Regulations J1 and C2 of The FA Football Agents Regulations, Regulations A2 and A3 of The FA Regulations on Working with Intermediaries, and Regulations A1 and B3 of The FA Third Party Investment in Players Regulations.

In total, 74 charges have been brought against Chelsea FC. The conduct that is the subject of the charges ranges from 2009 to 2022 and primarily relates to events which occurred between the 2010/11 to 2015/16 playing seasons.

Chelsea FC has until 19 September 2025 to respond.’

All bent as each other. Just who gets caught, and who has the deepest pockets and best lawyers.

Signing of youngsters, tapping up, undisclosed payments, etc etc.

Token gesture fine and a 6 month ban on appeal for transfers, when they've a squad of 200 players, itll make no difference.

No sporting advantage no doubt. Points off for us, but nowt for these.

Like with anything, it is the quality, not the value.
For decades I am beyond certain that we paid way above stupid prices for dire / average at best for a plethora of players on nonsensely high contracts. (There has to have been a scam involved somewhere along the line because the crooked dead one was in charge throughout the process of buying and selling for the majority.)
Now that he and the awful directors of football we have saddled ourselves with, have disappeared, finally. And fucking finally some quality has come in through the door.
Occasionally but hens teeth rarely, we had an exceptional player, but generally not spread throughout the team.
With Grealish we have surpassed that. Well Pix too to be fair.
With Illy and Branners, there is proof of further excellence.
The additions of KDH has also dragged us to another level.
Beto will now get service and score more.
With a few more untested new players plus getting rid of failures, and the delightful magic we are able to create, its no wonder heads have swivelled in our direction.
Momentum must be maintained.
Gone is the chronic concern of where we could win.
This is arguably, likely to be the best team assembled (with hopefully more to come) since before that festering shit soiled our boardroom.
Good times ahead.

Martin # 7 between 2021 and this summer, we’ve been spending as though we were relegated at the end of the 2020/21 season without a parachute payment.

We have had a few short spells where we spent decent money during the Premier League era (I think Ryan H provided a link saying Kanchelskis would have cost £125m in today’s market) but really nothing like the clubs actually winning things.

Moshiri era 2016 to 2021 was a false dawn due to utter incompetence unfortunately - and even in that period we were still lagging behind those spending to win.

We’re at the start now of something completely new - apparently competent owners and some money to spend. But we still had only the 13th highest expenditure in the Premier League this summer - after an unprecedented period of negative investment.

We need a few more seasons yet of £100m (+) spending to catch up in quality - and even then it’s likely between 5 and 8 other clubs already ahead of us will spend more.

Although all sorts of mistakes have been made by those running the footballing side - the real reason why we’ve been rubbish for the Premier League era is because we’ve been poor in relative terms. It’s as simple as that
