Opposition Report: Winless, goalless, Spurs up next for Everton

Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ last-gasp stunner against Manchester United provided a much-needed tonic at the end of Everton’s dismal week.

Now, with the transfer window in the rear view mirror, Everton switch focus to a trip down to the capital, with Tottenham Hotspur the Toffees’ hosts.

Spurs, despite spending big this summer, have started the season with two defeats and a goalless draw — Roberto De Zerbi’s team are, in fact, yet to score a Premier League goal in 2026-27.

Can Everton avoid their usual fate of providing the perfect opponents for a struggling team to go up against, and instead, maintain the momentum?

The Toffees have won just one of their last 11 encounters with Spurs, with that being a 3-2 triumph at Goodison Park in January 2025.

The last meeting between these teams was on the final day of last season, with Spurs winning 1-0 and staying up as a result.

That marks Spurs’ only home league victory in 2026.

ONE TO WATCH

Usually, it’s been Richarlison who Everton fans have had to look out for. He was Spurs’ top scorer last term and he always seems to have a habit of scoring against the Toffees.

Had the end of the transfer window gone differently, of course, Richarlison would probably be set to feature here for the Blues. Instead, he has now been left out of Spurs’ Premier League squad and is stuck in limbo.

But, Spurs have brought in quality in attack, and Omar Marmoush is certainly an attacker Everton’s defence must keep a close eye on — and Jarrad Branthwaite and James Tarkowski will also need whoever plays in defensive midfield to ensure they are on top of the Egyptian when he drops in between the lines.

WHAT CAN EVERTON TARGET?

De Zerbi’s teams tend to be open, and even though Spurs kept a clean sheet against Forest, they gave up a couple of big chances, and they shipped 5 goals across their opening pair of Premier League matches.

Everton, on the flip side, have shown they are capable of creating chances — they just need more composure when it matters.

Tyrique George should be full of confidence after his superb goal against Man Utd, while David Moyes will be hoping Jack Grealish is fit to feature for longer after his cameo on Sunday.
