Martinez eyes Ince

 Comments (61)  jump
Updated Everton will open talks with Blackpool winger Tom Ince regarding a move to Goodison Park when his contract expires this summer, according to reports.

The Blues have been linked with a move for the £8m-rated Englishman for a couple of seasons now and rumour suggested that Roberto Martinez was close to signing him last summer but nothing came of the speculation.

Now, with Ince set to become a free agent at the end of this season, it is believed that Martinez is holding negotiations with his representatives this weekend about concluding a pre-contract agreement ahead of a move to the Premier League with Everton.

The winger is under 24 so Blackpool would get compensation for Ince, either a sum negotiated with Everton or decided by tribunal.

Swansea City are also interested in Ince and held talks with the player and his father on Wednesday.

Yes please. Would rather we saw him in blue this month though.

Blackpool really should have tried to move him out harder last year - they'll get shag all now, wherever he goes.

Maybe a bit of cash for poor blackpool to move him this month? Would still be excited by a summer move though! IMWT!

I'm sure there will be many clubs trying to acquire Tom Ince's signature, but what a great signing it would be if RM can persuade Tom to join us. Ince will get every opportunity to develop here, unlike Wilfred Zaha who rots away in the Man Utd reserves.

No fee if we let the contract run out. They might make a move to get some money back.

Don't know where this one came from. Only a couple of days ago Swansea chairman, Mr Jenkins, confirmed that he had made a fresh approach for Ince in a bid to get him before Liverpool stepped in.

This is a reasonable shout. RM could point to the likes of Barkley, Lukaku, Delboy, Stones and Oviedo, all young players who have either flourished under his guidance, or at the very least, progressed, within a fairly short period of time.

This may be more important to a person like Ince who must make sure that his next move builds on his potential, not necessarily his bank balance. For every Barkley, there is a Rodwell.....

Dennis, a lad posted on Twitter pics and a conversation he had allegedly had today with Ince, said he was meant to be meeting Martinez on Thursday on the Wirral; make of it what you will.

I think laws forbid him for signing a pre-contract with a domestic club until the final 3 months of his contract, he can sign a pre-contract with a foreign club in the final 6 months.

In reality this is probably impossible to inforce.

Oh dear, not at all convinced by Ince never understood the hype the ball seems always on the verge of bouncing off his shin.

Got him down as a Jordan Rhodes type outstanding in the lower divisions but not top level at all.

I'd be worried by this.

According to BBC Sport website, RM was at the Dundee United v Hibs game this afternoon. Therefore, doubt he could have met his representatives this weekend?

He would definitely be one for the future, would suggest good impact player from the bench this season if we got him this month.

Phil Sammon
357 Posted 05/01/2014 at 21:37:23
Worried? What on earth is there to be worried about? He's a free transfer with good potential and would be on £30k p/w absolute maximum.

And while you're there I'd have Jordan Rhodes on a free as well (not that he's available)

Surely there is something amiss here - as in, surely Blackpool could not have been so dumb to let their prize asset run out his contract.

I've been saying for a while now that we should go for him. He's a good little player with potential to be a great player. Let's nail him down now and get those Dundee kids in as well.
Barry Rathbone
363 Posted 05/01/2014 at 21:53:42
Phil, I'm worried because imo Ince and Rhodes are just not Premiership players let alone at the level we are aiming for, I don't see any potential at all.

Whether we pay them 10 bob or £10k a week is neither here nor there notably despite their names being bandied about for a few years no one of any note has gone for these two.

Seems another case of "British players" being talked up by the press because they're British rather than good..

Phil#360
What should they have done, you ask? is that a serious question?

Well, How about, not let him run his contract to the end - if he doesn't want to sign a new deal a year before then end, sell him and make 8m rather than zero....... its not rocket science.

Dennis Ng
367 Posted 05/01/2014 at 22:12:05
Barry, a lot of our players are signed from relegation teams, or teams are even close to EPL standard. Yet they are playing at the level you said we're aiming for. Unearthing "often doubted" talents is key to building a successful era.

Sure, there will be a few that will fail, but its a cost vs. reward game. If they are low cost, the reward when they perform becomes that much sweeter!

Craig Mills

Would prefer him to McGeady and would like to see him in January for a nominal fee.
Phil Sammon
373 Posted 05/01/2014 at 22:20:32
Steven

When could they have sold him for £8M? About 2 years ago maybe? Well at that point they possibly thought they could convince him to sign. Or they thought the player could lead them to promotion, far outweighing £8M. It's just the way it goes sometimes, it's not necessarily negligence on the club's part. So no, it's not 'rocket science', but neither is brain surgery.

Barry

Nah, he's a decent player mate. Certainly has potential anyway...and we are a club that gets the best out of its players.

John Daley
375 Posted 05/01/2014 at 22:15:37
Always funny how people's take on a player can be so completely at odds. Wherever I've seen the seed of Ince he's always looked capable of cutting it in the Premier League. He's fast, direct, has a bit of trickery to beat a man and can also score goals. At his age, and potentially on a free, then I struggle to see the downside.

As for no one going in for him before now, both the red shite and Cardiff put bids in for him not so long ago and there was also serious interest from Spurs.

Oh, and the reason he's seemingly being allowed to run down his contract by Blackpool might have something to do with (rightly or wrongly) fatherly concerns taking precedent over club concerns.

Craig Mills
379 Posted 05/01/2014 at 22:28:00
Barry, I certainly think he is one of the better talents in the Championship, he seems to have a goal in him and would also add another young talent to our rising stock of players the right end of 20years old. Good business would be to sign him up for a small fee and let Blackpool keep him until the end of the season. I'm not too sure when he would get a game when Del Boy comes back If we were to get him in Jan
Colin Glassar
382 Posted 05/01/2014 at 22:30:35
When people say he won't cut it in the prem they probably thought the same about Redmond from Norwich who's proved a brilliant buy from brum. Or Bale and Walcott who both came from lowly Southampton. Many players who have moved up a division or two have indeed failed to make the grade but many have succeeded. If we don't try and risk it we will never know, will we?
Sam Hoare
383 Posted 05/01/2014 at 22:29:51
Blackpool DID accept £8m for him this summer but the lad himself pulled out at the last minute I think.

Looks useful to me. Quick and with an eye for both goals and assists. Of course he's not the finished article yet but then if he were at his age he would be out of our reach.

Suspect that he if stays in UK on a freebie then it will be to a bigger wage payer than us eg Spurs, RS or Newcastle.

Harold Matthews
384 Posted 05/01/2014 at 22:22:38
Steven. You can only sell him to a club he is willing to go to.

Whether he is any good or not is another issue altogether. Personally, I haven't seen enough of him to form an opinion.

Watched the Derby v Chelsea cup-tie this afternoon, mainly to see the lad at Derby Will Hughes who is getting rave reviews, hopefully we are not in for him, as he looked less than ordinary, just goes to show young English player bulled up by the press. I fear Tom Ince is the same as he is not getting the reviews he got last season.
Dennis Ng
390 Posted 05/01/2014 at 22:41:49
Yea, but I like the direction here, going for young talents mostly with a few old heads to guide them. As much as they seem less than ordinary, we should put in context that the team they are in and the team they are against. It's Derby vs. Chelsea! Not Northampton or MK Dons...As long as the financial risk is low, I'm fine taking the risk and letting RM groom them.

The lad is a really good player. I would love to see him come in and learn from Barry.

It's not Ince or Mcgeady that we need, it's a loan deal with a view to buy of John Guidetti. This lad is like a young Bergkamp and will be world class within a couple of years.

Really can't understand all the fuss about this. If Bobby thinks a player is good enough then that's all that is needed for me.

Some of you moaned about McCarthy, you were wrong!

Many moaned about Barry, they were wrong!

People said Alcaraz was rubbish they were wrong!

People said we would become the new Wigan, they were wrong!

So whoever he decides to buy, let's just accept that they will probably be pretty damn good.

If Ince couldn't make it at Liverpool I doubt he can make it at Everton, although for a free, he can't be any worse than Osman or Naismith for back up on the bench. I know it's not wise to trust YouTube videos but that Scottish Messi looks a special player. Maybe we can do a deal but leave him on loan up there until next season for when Delboy has gone back to Barcelona.

I think we should be buying young talent for the future to ease in slowly rather than old players like Kone. A winger, striker and a holding midfielder is a must for next season when all the loan players are gone.

Liverpool tried to buy him for £8m last summer and he refused to go. Geof #420 is spot on. Martinez has been spot on so far so put your trust in him until he is proved untrustworthy.

John Daley

"If Ince couldn't make it at Liverpool I doubt he can make it at Everton"

That was obviously a mistake on the Red Shite's part, as evidenced by the fact they tried to buy him back for millions a mere 18 months after letting him go for a meagre £250k.

Harold Matthews
496 Posted 06/01/2014 at 11:14:35
I'm with Geof and Steve on this one. Martinez will get it right. To him, character and personality are just as important as ability and all targets will be heavily scrutinised. Indeed, Big Sam recently declared that anyone able to bottle the secret of knowing a player's character, would make a fortune. (Ravel Morrison??).
Colin Glassar
498 Posted 06/01/2014 at 11:52:25
Spot on Geof, yet the doubters remain. Every match day the 3-4 regular 'pre-match moaners' are out in force questioning Roberto's decisions. Most of the time, he proves them wrong. In Roberto I Trust.

Increasingly EPL clubs must take gambles on young Championship talent as the FFP rules impact. I don't understand the reluctance to gamble on Ince? Those saying he's not up to EPL standards would surely have said the same on Coleman? Now gone from £60k player to £10M scoring right back in two seasons.

Ince may be a bit of a nark, I don't know tbh but unless he makes Charlie Adam look like a choir boy id gamble! I'm more bothered that we may pay money for McGready though truth is, like others say here, trust Martinez who is already proving astute in the market and frankly McCarthy now looks a steal even at £13M.

Guidetti is a first class tit. More like the next Bendtner than Bergkamp!

The loan situation is interesting. We could pull another rabbit out the hat there with someone like Xherdan Shaqiri. Champions league class and we take us up a level.

I don't think I've ever seen Ince play so don't have much of an opinion on thins, but I have just watched a few videos (yeah, I know) of Ryan Gauld and this kid looks class.

Scottish Messi? Absolutely. We should buy him while he's cheap. Stright replacement for Deulofeu when he goes back to Barca next year.

Sam Hoare

James, I'm not sure about being Guidetti but I agree about Shaqiri. A very talented youngster who may have lost his way a little. Perhaps Granit Xhaka might be in a similar bracket or indeed Kevin De Bruyne, though I think Chelsea are not short of high paying suitors for him.

Talented youngsters with high energy and excellent technique, that's what I believe RM will be looking for. Though in the striking department he may want someone a bit more experienced if Jelavic is on his way.
